Mention of Over Unity devices in many scientific circles will draw icy skepticism. But if you can accept the idea that Minato's device is able to create motion and torque through its unique, sustainable permanent magnet propulsion system, then it makes sense that he is able to get more out of the unit than he puts in in terms of elctrical power. Indeed, if the device can produce a surplus of power for longer periods, every household in the land will want one.

The Yahoo article cut off the entire bit about the limits of the study from the second page of the Reuters posting:

    STUDY LIMITED

The authors said the study had some limitations.

The television viewing data came from the parents and may not be completely accurate. Also, there is no way to know whether the children already had attention problems early on that attracted them to TV viewing, though symptoms don't appear that early, it said.

It was also possible the parents who allowed excessive TV viewing were themselves distracted and neglectful, creating a household that fostered attention problems in the children. Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder has a high heritability level, the study said.

And the study did not look at what kinds of programs the children watched.

"Despite these limitations our results have some important implications if replicated in future studies," it said. "First we (have) added inattention to the previously studied deleterious consequences of excessive television viewing ... (and) our findings suggested that preventive action can be taken."

Since the whole purpose of this probe would be to detect life, I would think they'd be attempting to insert a probe at a location most likely to support life. The surface is frozen, but many scientists hope that there is liquid water underneath, and this probe is designed specifically to melt its way down to the warmer regions and then look for life near likely locations like geothermal vents. Now that I think of the probe melting ice, the probe itself will have to be heated which would be enough to 'wake' the bacteria up.

Not that seriously. The first Apollo mission found the moon to be sterile, but later Apollo missions found strep bacteria from previous missions.

Bacterial contamination is a real danger to life and to accurate science on Europa and lake Vostok. It is extremely difficult to keep a robotic probe from carrying contamination since modern electronics can't take the extreme heat needed to kill resilient strains (which since they're so resilient would make them even more harmful). Scientists have been putting more effort into trying to figure out how to explore Europa without contamination, but are having a tough time coming up with a solution.

Actually I think the opposite could happen since the 'next best thing' if the GPL is illegal is for normal copyright law to apply and this would forbids anyone from using or distributing the previously GPL'd materials without express permission.

The court shouldn't care that the author wanted to distribute freely, because it is clear that they were distributing under a restricted license that allows free use only if certain conditions are met and that if those rules aren't followed then free sharing privelege is revoked. This makes it clear that the original authors intent wasn't to just give everything away and completely throw out their copyright rights.
