Why does one then need a PS to PDF converter if it's just postscript?
Because PDF is a subset of PS, therefore, it *IS* PS syntax, just not every PS operation works in PDF.
look it up - I would but I'm drunk and don't want to... also since I'm drunk you should probably take the above with a grain of salt, and look it up. Posted without the karma bonus for that reason.
i'm quite fond of Iconagrpher as an icon creation/editing tool. It works well in a pinch, however, i usualy design my icons in photoshop at 256x256 (or higher) then scale them down, and drop them into iconographer.:)
While we are on the subject of JPEG compression, i recently launched http://jpgcrunch.com/, which reduces JPEG file sizes losslessly. that can help things too:D
*Battens down the hatches for an incoming barrage of slashdot traffic*
even though it's not free, i'm quite fond of Stuffit's sitx format. the expander is availble as a free (not as in beer) download from http://www.stuffit.com/, as well as being included on the mac platform.
While my PC is a single CPU, I also own a Mac G4 500Mhz dual CPU system. It's not the fastest thing in the world, but what impresses me is that I can be building something on it (e.g. Mozilla) and the desktop is still responsive and fast. That's what a dual CPU gets you. I recently tried a Mac mini (clocked at 1.25Gz) and the different in performance was very noticeable - if I launched a video or something, and ran the mouse over the dock the desktop would start getting all jerky as it tried to service both tasks. My venerable G4 has a slower clockspeed than a Mac mini, but I've never seen anything like that before.
It's all about the RAM. Notice that i'm comparing a 500 MHz single G4 to a 1000 MHz single G4, and calling the faster one slow as ass. this is because the faster one only has 25% of the RAM! the faster machine also has a 2.66x faster bus (100 MHz SDR vs 266 MHz DDR used as SDR) and a loads better GPU, but it's still a PITA to run because it doesn't have enough RAM to run a web browser, (Safari) and a [word processor (Pages) || email program (Entourage)] at the same time without swapping.
How much RAM do you have in your Mac mini? how much in your PM G4? i'm willing to bet that you have a similar ratio i do. try upgrading the RAM on that mini and see what happens.
I build lots of source code. Things like Mozilla take 30 minutes or more to build. On my current system drags down other tasks such and the whole system is stilted and slow. You should give gentoo a try. That metadistro does a good job at staying responsive while you build code. even with a single CPU/Core.
Close: Airport (vanilla, not extreme) is a modified PCMCIA (16 bit!) and the cards *ARE* basically lucent Orinocos - adapted for 16-bitness.
AirPort Extreme otoh is industry standard mini-PCI (i remember reading about it being mini-PCI when it first shipped) and the cards use a buffalo 802.11g chipset.
The good news is that Because they are on a normal bus (rather than a proprietary one) the drivers work on cardbus cards that use a buffalo chipset as well.:D
i've been deletingbookmarks for sites that i used to regularly visit since september because of this "problem".
I'm vocal about it (see above) to convince people to stop viewing the sites that are infested with popups. It's the only way to resolve the problem - if a site endorses popups, they may get a short term boost in earnings, but they get a long term reduction in eyeballs, and in turn a reduction in earnings.
If it doesn't map to eject, the F12 key will - it does on every other ejectless keyboard. Interestingly, on USB keyboards with power buttons aimed at the mac market, the power key brings up the classic "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?" prompt. Sadly, the same power button doesn't boot the computer.
Apple has always had this, not only with USB, but also in the olden days with ADB, on the first Mac, which is great.
just to pick nits, (why? i dunno) the 1st 4 macs (Macintosh 128k, Macintosh 512k, Macintosh 512ke, and Macintosh Plus, and likely the Lisa/Macintosh XL) used a serial mouse that plugged into the back, and the keyboard used a funky preparatory connector that plugged into the front of the computer using an RJ11 or RJ12.
ADB (designed Steve Wozniak of all people) didn't debut until the Apple ][GS shipped. (i shit you not!)
There is also the matter that ther is a G4/G5 based gaming box on the horizon, I believe that it is call "XBox Next" or something
don't forget that there is a PowerPC based gaming box on the market (and probably in your home) right now - the GameCube. Sure, it isn't the same modle chip that is in any shipping mac (it was custom designed by IBM for the big N) but it still supports the same ISA that the G3 does.:)
IBM is in the perfect posision - a total monopoly of the TV gaming CPU market.:D
i've only run into 3 websites that *REQUIRE* IE for windows (granded i havn't been looking hard either)
MLS - Multiple Listing Service for Real Estate. this website alone has prevented meny a Windows -> Mac switch for me alone, now multiply this acnticidote by 1000. but this one doesn't count because only realters are locked into the system, not the general public.
Seibol - a stupid, slow, and crapy internal system used at the techshop that i work for dealing assets, and time management. This system is probably the single biggest time waster at our shop. uhg. but this one doesn't count because only techs who work at the same company i work for are locked into the system, not the general public.
Pop Cap Games - some of the newer online games are activeX controls. it ticks me off because i got addicted to one of the activeX games while bored at school (and on windows) and i can't play at home because i refuse to use that pile of horse excreesion that Microsoft calls Internet Explorer.
So in reality, popcap are the only ones holding back the FireFox monopoly.
me on the other hand, i just developed a CSS based website that looks great in FireFox, and in Safari, and in Opera. but when i tried it in IE, i confirmed what everyone theorized - IE's CSS sucks the big one. i had to use PHP to spit out code that uses an entirely different stylesheed, and gifs rather than pngs - not to mention that i still needed IE7.
wow! you can put the mobo in (3 mintues) and the CPU (1 mintue) and the RAM (30 seconds) and expansion cards (2-5 minutes) and HD/Optical Drive (5-7 minutes) *AND INSTALL AN OS AND APPS* (3 hours) in 15 minutes?! please tell me what timewarp you use. i'd love to show my boss.
(don't forget about my mirror of the video that has dropped off to the second page...)
Dude! Pseudonym is better than John Kerry's running mate!! he's channeling my dead aunts second cuisine twice removed! We should give him his own show!
iChat AV (in it's currently shipping form) only supports a 2 party video conferance... you'd have to use other software, or wait for Tiger (later this year):\

you are either a troll (look! i bit!) or are one of the people from the most recent poll who needs to live 1000 years ago.
wake up man! we live in an age where we are allowed to make OUR OWN CHOICES, not those that our church/governemnt says we must take.

i can think of at least 4 others.. at least in Humans... i would they that they apply to all mammals though :P
they still teach in schools?!

BOYCOT THE POPUP INFESTED SITES!
But are we really so narcissistic that we think something that looks and acts human is a good design?
It works for the religoius zelliots who think that their god designed them in it's own image, so why not continue the cycle?

yes, but at this point, it's an IBM built PPC in all 3 systems ^_^;;

I'd try darwin - that is just the 1st step towards Mac OS X ;)
(first post?)
but that doesn't count because only Windows users need to use WU, and we all know that Windows users are an endangered species ;)

or you can use the same bluetooth wireless headset that you would be using with your phone. :)
