    I'm running Redhat 7.3 (or 7.29543994999999 1/2) whichever you prefer). I also have running gkrellm. I have a p3 533, w 655MB ram. No matter how many apps I have open my mem usage stays constant, with virtually *no* paging. Mind you, the system is using about 250 MB at all times...

    Plus, it boots faster.
    I know these aren't hard numbers, but it is faster.

    The problem with a retro-virus, is that each time it replicates, it takes a small chunk of the host's dna with it. Each iteration of the virus is a different virus altogether. Hence, the problems with developing a vaccine or cure. Influenza and HIV are both retroviruses. Google knows. Look up 'retro-virus/immunology' if you're interested in more reading...

    All kidding aside, you're right. For instance, I didn't know what the middle number represented in the kernel releases. The only reason I scan these threads, is for the simple fact that I appreciate the experiences and insights that other /.'ers have to offer. Someone may have already installed the patch, found a problem, and have posted it here, or they post a quick synopsis of what the patch includes - thus enabling me to determine whether I want this one or not. I find threads like this *very* informative. As for all those bitching about kernel updates being on the main page - click on "Start" then "Windows Update" and leave us alone.

    Does the GameCube play DVDs? CDs? No. It plays games, and Nintendo has stated before that it is first and foremost, a gaming machine. I don't want to throw my 72-in-one home entertainment system in a backpack and take it to my buddies house so he can spill beer on it. Damn...I'm afraid to move the PS2...I feel as if I'm going to break it. The GameCube has a *handle* on it!

    Move the XBox? Ha. You don't lug your PC around, do you? Might damage that HDD.

    I'll take the GameCube over the other systems *any day*. Plus, you can plug your GBA into it.

    I see your point, but from a n00b33 perspective, I think this is a great idea. I'm in the process of trying to convert my home and work pc to Linux. I love using it - I like the fact that it's open, stable and free. But face it - there are some tasks I *need* windows for. Like work, for example. I support the 'Doze platform, and all of our tools are written/designed for it. Something like this wouldn't shoot my productivity all to hell and I could dabble when I had the time instead of rebooting. (Of course, all you need to do is get another pc...I digress) I'm forcing myself at home to *NOT* use my Windoze partition - I don't need it there.

    Either way, this is a Good Thing (tm) because it will expand the user base of Linux.

    A Local Area Network (LAN) is a term used to refer to a network of computers in a single building or plant. The type of network could be anything including Ethernet, Tolken Ring, ARCnet and RS-232 serial cables.

    Yes - Tolken ring. Look it up on everything2.org.

    I think that we should simply _not_ buy these CDs. That alone will speak louder than purchasing said CD and then returning it. Check the label (man are they stupid for marking these things), if it has the "new" copy protection, move on. They'll get the hint after a week or two of no sales.

    We don't want to hurt the local retailer, or even the big chain. That is one sure-fired way to get the increased costs passed on to the consumer.

    I read somewhere that Patrick Stewart doesn't want to do the Trek series anymore, and has had his hands in writing his death into the next movie. I can't find a link for the life of me...anyone else heard anything?

    If this is the case, I can't wait to see what direction the franchise takes after this...

    That doesn't mean I'm going to have my kids watch an R rated movie with this thing. Sure you can take out cussing, violence and nudity - but what about mature themes? Kids aren't immune to those.

    Besides, why would I want to ruin a director's vision of what s/he would like the audience to see?

    I can't easily pack up my tower, 19" monitor and throw it in the car if I want to go to a buddies house to play NHL200x.

    The consoles are portable. *Really* portable. Throw 'em in a backpack and you're ready to roll. If that's not important to you, then don't buy one. I'm going for a game cube when they come out-with 4 controllers. I can't play my pc with 4 people at the same time (online Quake3 doesnt' count). I don't mind if people bang my controlers around if they're pissed cause I just got my 12th touchdown. I can buy more - they're cheap. I don't mind if buddies spill beer on the controller, or console or games - they can buy me another one - they're cheap.

    I love consoles. I for one will keep buying them.

    As for the menus, if you don't have the video card, then this helps quite a bit:

    Right Click My 'Puter ->Advanced Tab->Performance Settings->Adjust for best performance radio button.

    There's other options to mess with too.
