  1. The Video Card Makes all the difference... on InfoWorld says WinXP much slower than Win2K · · Score: 3, Informative

I was running Win2k on my HPVLI8 here at work (you can look up the specs at hp's web site). I recently added another HD and installed XP with the Plus pack, and Office XP. My 2k partition was running Off. XP as well. I have 256MB of mem installed, to speed things up a bit (they come with 128).

Well, let me tell you how disapointed I was. The XP partition is slower than *anything* I have used before. The article is bang on the money, but doesn't mention a video card *anywhere*! I have the same configuration at home (with a 32 Meg D3D card, pIII 533, 655MB RAM) and it just purrs. Fast boot, fast shutdown, everything. My only complaint is with IE 6. It sucks. If I get any more of those "Do you wish to Debug?" windows I'm gonna lose it.

If you're in charge of purchasing, and you're reading this...upgrade to 2k. Not XP.

  2. ID Story... on Undercover Hacking, For Money · · Score: 2, Interesting

A couple of years ago, I was working late in the office one night (maybe 5:30 or so) and this woman came up to me asking me where the copy room was. I asked her if I could see her ID, because the company has a policy of visible ID at all times. She kind of chuckled and said it was on her desk. I didn't know what to do next, as I was relatively new with this company, so I asked her if I could see it (Mine was clipped to my belt). She agreed, and walked me around to the other side of the office to her *office*. A big office. She shows me her ID, I apoligize for the inconvienience, but she says "no no...that's ok!"

Monday, I show up at work and everyone is laughing at me. Turns out, I ID'd the new VP. Later that morning an email went around asking everyone to be more security conscious, and always ask someone you don't know for their ID.

It was sent out by the VP and corporate security.
People stopped laughing, and started asking for ID from those they didn't know.

Moral of the story: it doesn't hurt to ask someone to show their ID, and you never know who you'll be asking. (Plus, the brownie points are fabulous!) ;)

I agree, however, a great deal of money that goes into research comes from grants and bursaries from private organizations and *taxpayers*. What is the budget for AIDS research in the US alone? Did the company base their drug on any previous works done by public organizations?

I don't specifically agree with Brazil's decision but this is human life we're talking about. What's more important to you? Making the _big company_ a few more bucks, or preserving quality of life ? I personally think Brazil is going to get away with this one. If it were a cough medicine, or something more mainstream, then no. Other countries (read: Africa) will be sure to follow their example. In Africa people are dying of AIDS at an alarming rate.

Darwin was more correct in that he postulated the giraffes with necks not long enough would die out, and those with the longer necks survived. Lamarck's views on this were "learned behavior from the parents" translated to hereditary traits, while Darwin's were hereditary, through natural selection.

You seem to take Lamarck's view. It won't work, and not for just the reasons I've outlined here.

The whole point of the project is to determine not just the location of the sharks but a _pattern_ of movement. Infinitely valuable data, IMO.

I'm pissed that Napster is going down the tubes. I've bought more CD's since I've started using Napster than I have in the last 5 years combined. Why is that? Because there's nothing like coming home, opening that damn trickey plastic wrap on the cd...smelling the case...(ahhh), pulling the tightly placed cd off the holder and placing it in my cd tray. I sit and listen to the cd, while browsing the cover art...I read the credits...dissect the whole thing. I ENJOY this. Y'know what happens to 90% of the songs I download from Napster? I delete 'em.

The only artists that Napster could possibly hurt are the "One Hit Wonders". Why should I go out and buy a whole cd for one song? Quality music doesn't suffer from file sharing....Crap does. It's just too damn bad RIAA has their panties in a bunch because they think they're losing money.
