I see your point, but I think that if these are University-owned apartments, it is well within their rights. It's like an apartment prohibiting you to smoke, to repaint your walls, to play loud music, to put christmas lights on your balcony, etc. On the other hand, I didn't RTFA but if you're not on the campus network, how can they trace your AP to you? Btw, at my school APs are disallowed in all dorms, but not in university apartments. However, if yours isn't causing any disruptions (ie: your building isn't close to campus and the on-campus wi-fi, you have a weak AP such as airport express) they (the IT team) probably won't give you problems.

So what's the current state of file sharing? If I don't share any files but download illegally, will I get sued? Or are they still only pursuing those that share files?

Are there some tools that are safer than others? Bittorrent has always seemed safe to me, since you tend to only share some random bytes. What else is safe? SoulSeek? eDonkey? Gnutella2?

Filesharing is just bad. Of course I do it anyway. But if you look at your campus' bandwidth usage, some ludicrous number like 95% will be p2p traffic :-/

  12. Re:Not very accurate on Intel Ranks Colleges with Best Wireless Access · · Score: 2, Interesting

I agree that it's not very accurate. I was surprised to not see my school (Columbia University). We have wireless _EVERYWHERE_ except the rooms residence halls (it is in most lounges I believe). I mean, we have it in our entire quad, 802.11g in the library, the student center, and at least 802.11b in almost every main campus building.

I think part of the discrepancy may be the shear size and layout of our campus--we are spread across many blocks of Manhattan where it's hard to get "full coverage" compared to, say, a completely enclosed campus. But they damn well try, and pretty much everywhere I would want to use wireless, I have a strong connection. So basically I question what this list really tells you. Please don't make your decision to go to school based on this list. If you really care about wireless take your laptop over and check it out for yourself.

  13. Gnome - KDE - Gnome on Ars Technica: Deep Inside KDE 3.2 · · Score: 1

I must say I was 100% gnome forever... mostly because it just "looked and felt" better. I found myself switching to KDE when I reformatted (to get rid of windows for one and for all, not because I had to) since 3.2 was around the corner. And although I agree that integration is excellent, quality is amazing, and the "look&feel" has come a lon way, especially with plastik imho, the feel still isn't quite Gnome-ish (or Mac-ish, which is how I perceive Gnome). Also it was still a little bloated/slow on my pretty nice laptop (Centrino 1.6Ghz). It uses massive amounts of ram even when idle, applications take a few seconds to pop up. Also, Konqueror ain't perfect, and it ain't that incredibly fast either... Also the Panel is god-awful. It's not so ugly itself anymore, but the dockapps are still icky. Try the weather monitor.

So over the weekend I said "what the hell", trashed KDE completely, and installed Gnome 2.5.5. And although it's buggy as all hell (they're transitioning to gtk 2.4 so mass breakage) it just "feels" better. The only real killer app that I can see from kde is K3B, which is a fantastic piece of software. I disagree with someone above that kopete works better than gaim. I guess it depends what IM program you were used to before.

But in the end, I still *love* the amount of choice I had. While I was switching desktops, I was running kahakai and openbox. My friends tried to use my computer and were like "how do you start that desktop thingy?" and I was like "this is my desktop thingy!" And of course they'll be more confused when my desktop looks unmistakably different...

Nautilus is alot nicer in 2.5.x btw... Konqueror-style speed and previews, and MacOS finder-style (opens a new window for each folder, you can disable this though, i thought i would hate it but it's pretty nice once you get used to it).

In the end, my advice is just to Enjoy Linux (TM)

  20. Re:Cut-and-Paste in X beats the competition... on X.org and XFree86 Reform · · Score: 1

Fair points, but there are two huge weaknesses to this system.

    1. If you select something by accident, ANYTHING, you lose what was in the buffer. Also, say you're copying a URL into your browser. You select it, then go to the browser, then select the url that's in the location bar already and hit delete... oh wait, you lost what you were copying!

    2. What about copying pictures or binary data? The select system only works with text. What if I want to copy an image from a web browser to an OOo document? Tough beans...

I run KDE 3.2 although I was never a big fan of it. Why? Integration is amazing. There is a daemon which extends the click-select feature, called Klipper, which recalls the last N things you copied, supports binary data, and using ctrl-v and ctrl-c works equivalently to selecting in most situations. So I think the problem has, for the most part, been solved for those that need the extra functionality.
