Umm, ya know I went to that site and something stuck out at me:
* Part 1, Core coding system (intended as royalty and license-fee free - NB NOT patent-free)
So it too will be covered by patents. Charming. Software patents are by far the stupidest idea I've ever heard of. Copyright I can understand, patents are pure idiocy (or good business which is shockingly like pure idiocy).
The yelling "Fire" is an issue of safety and the slander or libel doesn't apply in this case. I think it is pretty clearly a free speech vs. Diebold case.
And I really have no idea how long a road it is to get the rulings that protect free speech in the face of corporate greed. But I think now is certainly a good time to start down that road.
ethereal sniffs on the network level. So it'll soak up your tcp, udp, icmp, etc and display that. Kismet sniffs on the link level (basically the level above). You'll get the wlan traffic going back and forth but if its encrypted you'll have to wait until enough weak traffic has gone by for it to crack the wep.
Of course, if the wlan isn't wep'ed up, kismet will happily read and drop the packets to a log file just like ethereal will. Basically your hunch was right.
Honestly, I've always seen the octothorpe as plenty of warning that you could be breaking everything you're touching. Thats why I don't play tic-tack-toe.
I need more variety than that... at least 256. Or maybe just a nice web-safe pallet.
Nah, go with the 256 indexed colors and make the 256th the alpha channel. Hit a button and it disappears Predator-style. Usefull for when the little kids come over.
"I bought this Mac OS X and it won't install on my Dell."
Assuming that a totally different OS will support your hardware completely seems a bit strange to me. When I came to Linux, it supported everything but my winmodem, which I replaced. And for that period of time where I couldn't afford to replace it, I dual booted. I didn't bitch, whine or moan about how it wasn't supported - I fixed the problem. To bad I could never be a pundit with that attitude.
They're probably anti-free speech only in the sense that they don't want anyone else to dare compete with them. Most large companies should be awarded similar awards for clamping down on freedoms. It makes you wonder about what all of this media consoliation is going to do.
I agree Ashcroft is a bit crazy with the censorship but one big difference is that Ashcroft can be asked to resign or be voted out of office (hopefully for someone less restrictive). Monopolies with deep pockets will likely be around for a long time...
I have suggested they try linux. But they are nearly at the point of no return. They fear computer, they fear the hassle, virus scans, repair etc.
Yes, I find a lot of people like that around here as well. However, their conclusion is that "this machine is too slow". Well, its too slow because its email Klez 5: The final spamteer to a million people an hour (including me). So they buy a new computer and I as the resident computer type fellow get the task of setting it up and moving their documents over. I try to secure the machine as best I can and try and convince them to update but this group knows how it is.
Then I leave the "slow" computer. I currently have 4 of them in my room as a giant distcc cluster. Sadly what I really want is an iMac to run yellow dog on here at home but noo...
Curse you MacOS!!!
Yeah, lets see how many people don't read the whole thing and just mod me down for that line;).
That change is why on the 24th of March I purged Slackware from all of my machines. I was disappointed to see that but am now much happier with my current distros.
That doesn't sound right to me a at all. I didn't have any problems paying mp3s and compiling on a 366 Pentium 2. That was under the standard 2.6 scheduler. My guess offhand is a bad sound driver or maybe DMA is off.
Some people in this thread suggested preempt but honestly, in 2.6 I think its pretty much useless (I have it disabled in all my kernels). 2.6 doesn't seem to have the latency to require preempt.
They again, I'm one of "those people" that has a horribly tweaked out kernel. I'm running the wolk patchset with Con Kolvias's staircase scheduler, the CFQ ioscheduler, the AA objrmap and grsecurity. Bear that in mind when listening to my rabble:)
The American tourist industry thanks you for that heartwarming statement.
I'm bother by this plan as a US citizen. The next logical step of course, is to photograph and fingerprint all of us (citizens). Then we can have checkpoints everywhere to go through. And cameras, lots of cameras. And we can have a ministry to supervise it all...
Well yes, I'll agree with you on that point, however, there's also the "It's new" aspect. Once those "Guru" (I think Guri should be the plural of Guru but that's neither here nor there) learn how to configure a network printer in OS X, they'll likely be able to do it again.
I maintain OS X machines and some things with OS X were unlike anything I ever did before. Setting up an appletalk print server for the new iMac because it didn't have ADB or a Parallel port was fun. Actually it was a bit painfull as the office manager wanted to replace the 850 dollar laser printer with an epson inkjet and let me keep the laser. I had to talk reason into them.
At home I run Linux and avoided CUPS for years because no-where did I read it was configured through the web (this was a few years ago). I tried putzing through config files and editing/etc/printcap and nothing happened. One day the realization "Its web-based..... OOOOOOOhhhh..." Once the guru have that realization, they're halfway there.
Maybe its my compilation then. Either way I've figured that the course Gnome is heading with its HIG isn't really the way I want to go. I'm going to try KDE and if that doesn't work out for me I'll put XFCE4 on.
Well, that, and because gnome is slow as ass compared to kde.
Unqualified, unsubstantiated, stupid as ass FUD.
Have you used 2.6? I'm a die-hard Gnome fan but 2.6 is unbelieveably slow. It takes a good 10-15 seconds to come up after X does on an athlon-xp 1700+. 2.4 was never that slow. Honestly, I have run gnome since the early 1.x days and have never been more disappointed in a release.
Open up gconf-editor, and go to apps - nautilus - preferences. There is a key marked "always_use_browser". Check that off and the god-awful spatial crap goes away and nautilus works as it did in 2.4.
Also worth noting is that under apps - nautilus - desktop you can disable the useless my computer icon on the desktop. I've done both of this and 2.6 nautilus is actually useable now.
When the containment fails in a fusion reactor, the pressure on the plasma drops and you generally end up with a chamber of radioactive (tritium is radioactive) hydrogen gas. The containment vessel of the reactor would have absolutely no problem containing the cooling gas.
Did you see that PayPal donate button on thier site? Does anyone else have a problem with that? Hey, I made my own customized Knoppix CD, maybe I should put a donation button on my homepage.
Well there's nothing stopping you. Why are you complaining about this? If you don't like Distro X, don't run Distro X. If you don't like (Gnome || KDE || XFCE || Window Manger X) don't run it. And if you don't think the guy deserves money for this distro then don't give it to him.
If they REALLY wanted to help the community they would put thier skills to good use helping an existing distro. There are plenty of them already that focus on a 'lightweight' feel.
Did it ever occur to you that perhaps he didn't want to contribute to another distro. He made his own to fit what he wanted. People in OSS generally do what they want to or what they're paid to do. If he wants to build his own distro that's his option.
There's a section marked "The big gnome 2.6 mask" if you delete that you can emerge gnome-2.6_rc4 and that'll get you most of the 2.6 goodies.
When you redo an emerge sync it'll mask it again, and you'll have to edit the file. There's a way around that but this way is the quick and easy way to get going.
As for that fileselector - I still haven't figured out how I'm supposed to be able to type the full path name in so I can open the directory or file I want. That is a MAJOR obstruction.
After you have the fileselector open its Ctrl-l (That's an L) and that'll let you open a location and that has tab completing.
I've been running Gnome 2.6 (It's almost all in Gentoo now but masked) for roughly a week and I'd have to agree with you. I'm not a big user of Nautilus anyway but why I would want a Mac OS-9esq filesystem browser is beyond me. Fortunatly, there is an option you can bring up in gconf-editior under the nautilus tab and that will convert it back to the explorer style interface. In that same folder is the option to turn of the "we didn't have enough useless icons on the desktop so lets add one more" My Computer.
That said, my experience with 2.6 hasn't been all bad. Once you turn those options off, nautilus behaves much as it does in Gnome 2.4. And Gtk2.4 makes a noticable difference with the 2.6 panel. It looks clearer than 2.4 did. As for that fileselector - I still haven't figured out how I'm supposed to be able to type the full path name in so I can open the directory or file I want. That is a MAJOR obstruction.
I've been a Gnome user since before 1.4 and they've made considerable progress. This new version, however, has left me with serious doubts about their future.

I don't know of any VBR streams, since streaming inherently tends to require CBR content.
Thats funny because I almost only listen to streaming VBR content. They're called Ogg Vorbis streams (and you can rip them just as well).
I usually listen to Virgin Radio as I find the commericals hysterical but you can find a whole list here: http://www.icecast.org/streamlist.php

In other news, Hershey aquired by the NSA.

Actually, youngen, back in my day them there 3dfx Voodoo5's had extra molex connectors.
And mind you, Nvidia beat them with a smaller quieter faster card. My GF4's fan sounds like a chainsaw.
