I reality this isn't all that onerous. You don't have to boot into the original firmware yourself. Just plug it in. It recognizes that it has been plugged in and it boots itself into the original firmware all on it's own. When you unplug it, it reboots into rockbox.
I think Bell south is in the right here. Think about this. As in the Everybody loves Raymond episode, you give money to your brother because he has hit hard times. He then promptly books a vacation to Vegas. I'd be pissed. That money was for bills to help him along until he could stand on his own.
Same situation here. Bell south gives a building because New Orleans needs help. New Orleans then announces a free wifi network for the whole city. This is not a need, will take a lot of money, and will be taking directly from Bell south's business.
Mandrake is a 100% GPL'd distro, not unlike Debian, so it will still be there if they fold. Also, The userbase is very large and they have a !very! active community. I suspect that even if the company folds "Mandrake the distro" will continue to thrive. I can see it becoming a sort of user-friendly Debian.
After reading the FAQ it became apparent to me that ego's are not what is driving this request. Sure they want to be recognized, but to them the recognition isn't proclaiming how they are wonderful programmers. To them, recognition means that their political voice is heard. They believe strongly in the freedom of software. Saying GNU/Linux instead of just Linux could get folks closer to accepting their political viewpoint. It is a sort of subtle mental programming.
I don't know about anyone else, but I am very saddened by this for very selfish reasons. Loki ported some of the best games. They are the reason I just upgraded my video card, processor, and totally removed windows from my machine. Now I either put windows on for games, or I have just wasted a few hundred bucks.

It is pretty transparent.

Sucky.
The more people using OSS, the more eyes are on the product, and the more interest developers will have to improve the products.
Also the better the products are, the more people using them and the faster they improve.
No need to recompile. Just change the defaults.
