This is my approach as well. During the air conditioning season, the computer is on only when I am in front of it. From mid autumn through winter to mid spring I have it on 24/7 running climatepredition.net. I figure the excess heat just keeps my apartment warm.
Actually, I've done some simple benchmarking and been impressed that the Core2Duo chips are not all that much better at floating point calculations (structural biology programs) than the AMD chips. Now, the C2D cpus are much better at integer work, just not the double precision FP. So, I think the choice of the inexpensive AMD cpus is reasonable.
Belief is a useless term in science. It is sufficient to state whether a theory has merit and accurately describes what it sets out to describe. Anything beyond that is unscientific drivel and unworthy of discussion in this context. . I think your point is excellent and well stated. However, 'belief' comes into play when people who are not scientists decide what to teach the children in the public schools. What those elected officials and administrators believe is true and valid gets on the sylabus, while what they believe is false is left out. The debate to convince them of the falsehood of ID and the validity of natural selection is critical.
I've played now for a couple of years, usually 10 hours per week. The neat part is to play with the kids who are grown and off in grad school. We have a family guild and get together on weekends to do instances. Its a hoot.
In a similar family situation circa 1988 we did the same survey of television, and decided to turn it off. Never looked back - well, until the Colts went to the Superbowl.
Actually, driving 55 on the interstate does save fuel. I keep complete records of every tank of fuel, miles per gallon (US) and driving conditions. My ride is a 1997 Jetta diesel (manual) that I bought new and still drive (140k miles). Each figure comes from a long trip on the interstate where I was able to maintain the listed speed for the full tank. Test drives are all in the summer and repeated (over the years) with an N of at least 3.
70 mph - 45 mpg 65 mph - 52 mpg 60 mph - 56 mpg
I've not had the opportunity to do a whole tank at 55 mph, but I think that the trend is clear that driving slower than 70 mph does save fuel.
Actually we are responsible for the outcome of computer programs. In structural biology several major breakthrough structures were withdrawn with a high profile apology from the investigator. ( http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/314/580 7/1856 ) because the software they used changed the 'hand' of the data. Something the old timers thought about all the time that is hidden in the black boxes under the pretty GUIs we use these days.
hat said, the descriptions from the Russians about North Korea's bomb place it at 3m in length and weighing about four tons, which is far more than any North Korean missile can mount and more than most of their planes can handle. There is zero chance of North Korea mounting nuclear missile attack in the next few years, and they would have to learn some very powerful miniaturization tricks before they could threaten anyone at a significant range.
Actually WoW has turned into the next round of family gaming. As the kids were growing up, we played pencil and paper GURPS around the dining room table, and some classic computer games (Gold Box series) around the family PC. It was a hoot. During the High School it tended to drop off, as we all got busier with school/work phase changes. Then, when they were off at college WoW came around, and it has been brilliant. My daughter and I played most Saturday and Sunday mornings - as we are both early risers and her net latency was better. It didn't matter that I was in Indiana and she was in Minnesota. We would chat on Teamspeak and kill the mobs together. Quality time.
Now my son (grad student in physics in Boulder), his former roommate (Seatle), brother (L.A. entrepeneur)and I all play a Sunday afternoon instance group together. Daughter should join in this week as she is getting DSL installed in her apartment in Japan.
This was always the promise of the web. Seamless communication over vast physical distances. The family is great fun now, in spite of the miles that separate us. Yes. It is great Family Tims.
Actually this is not the case. Fructose is absorbed from the gut and enters the cells of the muscle and liver where it is trapped by phosphorylation by fructose kinase. One of the fundamental controls of intermediary metabolism is control of the initial phosphorylation of glucose by insulin mediated gluco (liver cells) or hexo (others) kinase. In other words the fructose is absorbed into the cell and there trapped regardless of the hormonal state of the animal. In fact, one animal model of adult onset diabete melitus is to feed a rat large quantities of fructose, wherein they develop the classic insulin tolerance.
Bottom line - sucrose is not especially good for us, and high fructose corn syrup is worse.
I believe the G1G1 promo for the OLPC was continued until 12/31. You can still get one.
