It's a pretty strange coincidence. Today I had to get information about a company for Professional Communications class. I went to the library, picked up an IT trade magazine, and went to the section about emerging companies in the new year. There is apparently a company called Kada Systems. That has created an extremely small JVM that can run very powerful applications on very small portable devices. Take that and your tiny linux kernel, and you're set.
Yeah, seriously. The only reason I don't use Debian is because the install sucks. I mean it really sucks. I used to use RedHat because the install was SO easy, but then I switched to Mandrake. Mandrake had the hardware support, the packages, and as far as I've seen, the easiest most powerful linux installer. But I really like the way debian runs after it's installed. Debian on Windows would be cool though, because then I wouldn't have to restart my computer to do a CS lab. And I could still have my mandrakes.
This is obviously a step in the right direction. It obviously isn't perfect, but nothing ever works right the first time through. My question is how quality will the music files be? Will they be 128, 256, 320? Whether they're mp3s, ogg, or some other format, will they be cd quality? I mean if I'm paying for music I'm going to expect to get the highest quality version there is. If I'm going to pay for low quality ones here I might as well go out an buy the cd.
I remember when people were talking about which was better quicktime or microsoft avi. One of them made files smaller by decreasing resolution of movies, but keeping the same on-screen size. The other decreased framerate. I just remember reading this in a really really old magazine. I still have quick time 2 somewhere. Ah DOS.
My roomate has a thing for cat-girls and he's pretty excited right now. I however don't like this idea one bit. I mean most wild animals can kick a human's ass. Imagine a lion/man or and elephant/man. Smart and powerful. They'll take over. Just like exo squad, if you've ever seen it.
I don't know what state you're living in, but XBox?? Damn. I was at college in Rochester, NY. Now I'm on break in Trumbull, CT, and I stopped in NY City. Major video game/electronics stores in all 3 of those locations seem to be in the same situation. GameCubes sold out on the 18th, but Nintendo shipped a whole bunch more real quick, and those are selling pretty fast. Stores that didn't have any either just sold out, have like 2, and all of them are getting more really soon. XBoxes it seems did not sell out on launch, and they have plenty of them. The XBox seems to be getting a lot more advertising, but we all know it needs it.
I'm not dissing the XBox just because it's MS. (even though I feel like I should). I'm dissing it because the only reason there is to buy it right now is DoA. And frankly I don't like that game that much.
However the XBox is a computer. A better computer than the one I have anyway. And it's only 300$!! If I could jam linux on that hard drive it would rock. Cheap servers will cool chassis for all! It may be big for a console, but it's small compared to an ATX tower.
I own a GameCube. The reason for that is, well reasons, are Mario, Luigi, Samus Aran, Smash Bros, Donkey Kong, oh yeah LINK/ZELDA woo ha!
Games for GameCube I must have = many
Games for XBox I must have = 0
Maybe Nintendo is lying about GameCube being the most popular console ever, and I wouldn't doubt it. They're probably adding up number from around the world or something. But who cares about that?
20$ rebate on all windows xp purchases! Just find an XP enabled ATM machine, call microsoft on your cell phone, and type in your registration key into the ATM, and you get 20$ free! (Microsoft will not steal personal information from you, such as your bank account number or which ATM machines at which banks you go to. However Microsoft is not responsible if your money is stolen due to security holes in the ATM's embedded operating system.)
first of all nothing is unhackable. Second they're talking about setting up a seperate wan for just the government. If just ONE computer on that network is also connected to the real internet, then someone can get in. If none of the computers on that network are connected to the internet, then government employees will be very unhappy at work. Hence, another waste of money.
I went to Media Play at 7 this morning. They told me that they would have 20 cubes and would open at 8. They opened at 9 and had 32 cubes. They didn't even sell them all at 9. Bought the system, luigi's mansion, and memory card. Going to buy smash bros. and another controller when the time comes.
Basically Luigi's mansion is great, it's very similar to all the 64 games like DK64, and Mario 64. The controller is great, the Z button is the only slight problem, but the L and R buttons make up for this in a big way. All analog buttons should be like that. Overall the cube kicks ass. It's really really small too. Incredibly convenient, powerful, I gotta go play some more of that. And uplink too.
I like that part where the dude who looks like Sean Connery whips out the red light saber. ALso likin' the Boba Fett. Not likin' the lovy dovy crap. Mo evil makes better movie.
When is someone going to come out with Linux for XBox. Seriously, the equivalent PC to an XBox costs oh so much more. If I could get Linux on there I've got cheap cheap servers. Tribes 2, Counterstrike, and Apache ahoy!
The problem with this is that it is a penny per-page. So visiting Google is two cents, one form the search page and one for the results. Then if I want more results it more pennies. Do I have to pay more if I click on a result then return to google? I'm at college, so I don't directly pay for my internet connection. Maybe it would work better if it was a penny per site. So 1 penny gets me all the google I want for a day. $3.65 over a year for one site is a price I'm willing to pay. Web comics i read daily would get the same, so would/.
I just want to know how they are going to keep track of who visited which sites and how much they owe. Are they going to have big servers in the sky? If so, someone will hack them. Are they going to let you keep the data on your personal computer, then someone will change it. No, I didn't visit any web sites. Someone will eventually right a program so you can surf undetected and pay no money.
Why don't they just give up on a business model. Let the internet be the happy free land already. The only way I can see the internet being good for business in the long run is if they nix the web.
We all know the Internet includes much more than web pages. The world wide web just happens to be the most popular application of the internet. If you replace it with something else, watch what happens.
It takes me about 20 minutes to put a computer together. The only thing that takes a long time is double-checking every little option in the BIOS and then waiting for the OS to install. I don't have to troubleshoot problems. In my experience the only times I've assembled a computer and had a problem, is when the parts were bad, like shitty boards, bad RAM, damaged processors.
WHo the hell needs support? Slashdot is New for Nerds. If you need tech support for your computer, you are not a Nerd. A Nerd will know exactly what's wrong with his computer and fix it mighty quick. Even more likely a Nerd wont have a problem with his computer because he knows how to take care of it, configure it correctly, and know which software to use. If you don't fall into this category then you should buy a pre-built computer. But I will still laugh at you when your Dell that you spent 500$ too much on crashes and my twice as fast computer which cost me less is humming all day and night.
So apparently they think that the part of the universe we can't see is dark matter or something? And they seem to be able to guess how much of it there is. I believe that the universe has always existed, and will continue to exist forever. It is also infinitely large in every direction. The only reason we can't see the rest is because the light hasn't gotten here.
When you shine a flashlight at a wall you can see that light spreads out as you move farther away. The stars are so far away that the light does not reach the little tiny tiny earth.
Even better. Maybe the universe wasn't always here, and it had a "creation" date. We think the universe is "expanding". Maybe it's because that light from that far away takes a certain amount of time to get here. So light from farther away places is arriving here for the first time ever. if we can figure out how many light years the farthest away thing we can see is, then we can figure out how old the universe is.
I still think it's amazing that when you look at the stars in the sky that you are looking billions of years into the past. Those stars you see where there before dinosaurs were here, and they might not even be up there anymore.
I have a large ext3 partition to store all my data and a 256MB partition of swap. I also have 384MB of RAM. Occasionally I'll hear the had drive grinding away like it's using the swap. I check and it is using the swap, but my real RAM isn't full yet. It's actually far from full, like 100MB free. I know if I don't have a swap partition it wont use it, but then I'll run out of memory sometimes, like when I have a huge pile of applications open at once. It really needs some work. I don't care about forks or anything, just make it work better.
If you are running a big server with mad power you probably want ReiserFS. If you are running anything else you probably want ext3. You wont notice any difference between the two unless you are running a very large powerful web server with many visitors, like slashdot here. For you, just about any file system on the list will work.
what about other games? I mean if you're only playing quake3 sure, go get a radeon. But if you play tribes 2, CS( the most popular game on the net), or UT, it really doesn't do much for you.
Desktop computers that come already put together with software installed are only for sale to the masses. If you know more about computers than the average person there is no reason for you not to build your own computer. Not only do you get to personalize your computer's configuration, but you will get a faster computer for less money.
Now as for the issue of support. With a Dell if anything goes wrong you have to call dell and talk for hours and hours and not get anything done. If you built your own computer you have seperate manufacturer's warranties for the different parts. This would seem like trouble at first, but actually it's great. You recognize which part is not functioning properly and you get it replaced. It gets replaced because there simply is no other option. What's creative going to do if your sound blaster doesn't work? Give you a new one. it's great, especially with people like Plextor and such. This is besides the fact that the computer is infinitely less likely to have problems because it was put together by you, and not a robot at dell.
Of course you bought a laptop, so this doesn't apply. However for laptops I reccomend sony vaio. They cost a lot of money though.
There is a rule of security I came to realize, however I doubt I am the first to do so. As you increase security of anything, you cause more work and generally make it more of a pain in the ass, for those people who are being kept secure. For example, a home alarm system, you have to rush into your house and type the code to turn the alarm off every time. Firewalls you either block your user's legitimate activities or leave holes open.
Today as you live your life see how many things you do daily that are for security. You lock your car, your house, your windows. If you wanted to be as secure as possible you would spend all day doing security related tasks. Can you think of any security system that doesn't create a hassle for someone?
I think hat a lot of people don't understand one thing about the SSSCA. I agree it would be a very bad thing if it were to become law. And yes there is a lot of bad stuff in it. However it only applies to things in the future. So the plexwriter that I've already bought is completely legal. However the plexwriter that is being designed by plextor right now, is not legal. They will have to cease manufacture of all non-secure hardwares and softwares.
Wow, this is great great news. Currently I run X 4. whatever. But when I installed mandrake it gave me a choice of X4, X3, and X3 with experimental 3d hardware accelleration. I really need the stability and features of X4 with non-experimental 3d with my TNT2. if this is any good, I'm so there. As long as I can still use ssh to X-Forward stuff from the CS lab.
Yeah, I konw it's trollish to say you're distro sucks. But from my personal experience Red Hat is pretty good, except for two things. 1) it doesn't have the hardware support 2) it doesn't come with all the nifty packages that I need/want. One thing good can be said for red hat, it is very very easy and stable. To each his own.
The best computer cases in the worlds IMO are available at www.coolermaster.com. They're so pretty. They have extra fans, alluminum body, and USB in the front, which is great for my gravis gamepad pro USBs. They're also extremely roomy and easy to work with. The trouble is finding a place that sells them, because the company doesn't sell them direct, and they have distributors in Japan and Europe, but not the US. They aren't all too expensive either. I personally reccomend the ATC-201 for anyone who needs a full tower and worries about heat. The fan in the top of the cast helps SO much.
It's a pretty strange coincidence. Today I had to get information about a company for Professional Communications class.
