    Is it unreasonable for a store to check your receipt before you leave? I don't think it's that big of a hassle, but if I did have a problem with it, I'd just exercise my freedom to shop somewhere else. It's not like they wanted to strip search him. He bolted to a running car waiting out front of the store which looks pretty shady and I'm willing to bet that was intentional as well.

    Interesting point. Around 1998, a friend who was moving from a giant house to a smaller place gave me a lot of stuff. One of these was a floor model 27" Sony from the early 80s. Worked like a champ even though it was getting near two decades only (also impressed with the number of AV inputs, functionality and even parental control considering the time).

    Worked perfectly until ~ 2005 when an extended series of power fluctuations in the area managed to screw the picture, a microwave, monitor, vacuum cleaner and several UPSes

    I find it hard to believe it's Trinitron replacement will be still cranking in 2025.

    With the mounts and all, I wouldn't be surprised, but perhaps I'm overestimating a tad, it was quite awhile ago. ;)

    I know it was pretty damn heavy. I helped move it once and it was heavier than most residential boilers, which at the time, was something I lugged around daily, so that puts it around 400lbs of wood at least.

    I'm not sure what type of wood it was made from, but it was carved by a chainsaw artist. Really amazing. Before it was stolen, I was trying to buy it for my house. (seemed like a good idea at the time)

    I wish I had a picture of it (it was recovered years later in someone's backyard btw)

    Keep in mind, you can't see the rest very well because of the lighting, it went back to near where the rear legs would be.

    Exaggerated or not, it was pretty damn heavy and mounted very securely.

    I dunno, I remember a Cajun restaurant around the corner had a really cool giant wood alligator sculpture crawling out of the side of the building.

    About 15 ft up, It was about 7 to 8ft long and weighed probably near 1000 pounds with the mount. Steel cables attaching it to the building amongst other things.

    One Sunday, a few guys showed up with a cherry picker and somehow detached, lowered it and carted it off. More than a few people saw it, but people just assumed they must be ok to cart it off, because who would steal a giant wooden alligator in the middle of the day?

    I can understand trying to keep a decent margin on a line of products... to a point.

    But if someone in a van is selling something 1/3 of SRP and still making a profit, then IMHO, whatever your selling is way overpriced. Especially considering van-guy probably already had his supply stepped on once and is still making money.

    The big retailer argument doesn't make much sense to me either. If they are buying millions in product, they're going to be paying much less for product then some guy in a van, so there should be a level of margin protection right there.

    Obviously, I'm talking about the cheaps here, not the returns.

    That's definitely a possibility, people drive like idiots, especially in lots, you're talking to someone who got hit in one by SUV while pushing his Dad in a wheelchair (I managed to push him out of the way).

    I guess what I mean by on the fence, is while it's potentially dangerous, a lot of knowledge is. I don't think a lot of people would build these (though I might be wrong), then again, outside of the knowledge of how such systems work, there isn't any real practical value to this instance. Then again, I'm against the dumbing down of people in the name of safety. So, not sure how to feel about it. I could certainly see someone seeing someone wired and causing a stampede too.

    On one hand, I don't think things like this should be censored, it's a pretty cool even though it's sole purpose is to annoy a bunch of strangers.

    My real concern is not even so much that someone would get hurt from a cart stopping abruptly (though that could certainly happen), is more what would happen if someone notices someone with an electrical device strapped to their body. That could end badly, seems far fetched but in a day and age where an LED Mooninite sign can trigger city wide panic, not hard to imagine someone getting popped for what looks like an IED.

    That was my thought, but the original article I read didn't specify if the cruiser had audio or just video. In my mind and IANAL, if he's being recorded already, and informs you that you are being recorded, then you've both consented to being recorded, not by whom, just that you are.

    Regardless, I have a video DVR in my car and the only way it would be an issue if there was some gross abuse of authority and in that case, think I'd have no problem chancing it.

    But isn't photobucket basically just a dump for image files to be posted elsewhere? Myspace sucks a good deal of the time, but the fact the people are there and so are there friends provides a certain sticky-ness that keeps them there. I can't imagine why a user would care whether they get their free image hosting at photo-bucket, image-shack, whatever.

    For a small fraction of that price, they could have just made a much better service and taken the users that way.

    Well if it works half decent (need more info on the pen and any features), you could take a cheap 15 lcd a piece of plexiglass and make a decent sketchpad. Yes, it won't compare to something made for the purpose, but then again, probably an 1/10th of the price.

    My own two cents on time perception...

    I think it's just your brain pushing the turbo button. Your brain starts processing faster so you have more samples relative to normal so it seems "longer".

    For instance, when I was a teen, I was in a pretty bad car wreck (passenger), the idiot driver was doing ~ 60mph in the city, fishtailed out of control and spun into a parked van. It was only a matter of seconds, but I had time to brace myself, close my eyes, imagine the crash in my head and me and all my friends in a gory pile in the aftermath, open my eyes and see that we hadn't hit yet. Luckily we all got away uninjured, though the car and van were like conjoined twins.

    My niece is autistic (moderate to severe), she showed no signs before immunization, shortly after, she stopped talking and became withdrawn to her own world.

    Does that mean mercury poisoning caused it? No, but I believe it had it's hand. Regardless if mercury is a contributor, it doesn't mean it would necessarily be the cause in all causes. Also children could be exposed to mercury through other pathways.

    Or maybe it's combining more and more immunizations. Now I'm not saying kids shouldn't get their shots, that would be retarded. But I debate the logic of combining more and more shots for convienence when we don't know how if there isn't any additional risk long term.

    But more than anything, what makes me think it is related is Bush's move to supress evidence.

    First, asking that all the records surrounding the cases be sealed by in 11/2002. Lying, saying this wouldn't have any effect on the ongoing lawsuits, knowing full well that the Patriot Act would be for no particular reason, be giving Eli-Lily and Co., blanket and retroactive immunity.

    You don't cover someone's ass when it's covered.

    It has and does happen.

    Look no farther than the lack of synthetic HDL. Heart disease is a huge problem, yet no one ever made synthetic HDL as they couldn't patent it until ApoA-1 Milano. A mutant version found in a small Italian town. Mutant == Patent == To market.

    I really need to find the original story I found on it. Not so remarkable in the drug news, but it actually stated the reason that HDL was not made even though it could potentially save so many lives, was they wouldn't invest any money in it due to the lack of patentability. A shockingly rare moment of brutal honestly in the news.

    Why didn't the goverment step up as it has to pay for it one way or another? Because they are in the drug companies pocket.

    Adjust the price point to where the majority of people who pirate won't bother.

    I'm guessing that more often than not people are downloading for the following reasons.

    Price.
    Convienence (I missed last night's Office, or a movie that won't be out for months)

    So make it cheaper, and make it more convienent and everyone wins. The problem is not just that they are trying to prevent theft, the *AAs are trying to kill fair use at the same time.

    Their endpoint has nothing to do with pirating (or very little), it's so that you can never own anything. They want to change the deal and make it so that whenever you want to do anything with it, you have to pay again. Turning ownership into subscription, much as Divx (the player, not the codec).

    On top of this, they use their clout to get us to pay for it! All of this technology geared at taking away what we already have, the price is coming directly out of our pockets, whether you watch movies a ton of movies, or not at all.

    I believe it's mostly a result of pharmaceuticals focusing research on profitability rather than efficiency, but I'm also not so naive that I find it impossible that a few greedy people could collude for a bounty of hundreds of millions of dollars either. Even if it meant the suffering of many.

    Big business screwing people or putting them in harms way driven by profit is not exactly unprecedented.

    What needs to happen is the goverment needs to start funding areas that have little profit motive. Look at HDL, they never synthesised it (even though it could be a huge boost for heart disease) because there was no money in it. Mutant family in Italy with variation? (patentable), coming to market.

    Actually it's an automotive media player for my car pc. But something like you are after should be pretty easy.

    Just set it up to run the slideshow as a screensaver and run your music app in the background.

    I'm not advocating censorship, but as a public company they have liability. So if Google has to cover there ass to provide me free hosting, I can't bitch about that too much.

    But if what I experienced was infact flagged content, it was quite reasonable. I wasn't trying to provide a high fidelity copy of somone else's music, I wasn't trying to capitilize on it, the music was simply to show function. In my mind, a fare and reasonable use (what the law would say OTOH)

    I'm just saying, if that were the way it was to work, it seems alright in my book.

    Don't get me wrong, no love for the those assholes. If they have there way, we'll never own anything, just rent it forever. More cost, less value.

    Only one video I ever uploaded was not posted immediately. It was a demonstration of a touchscreen media player I'm working on (Was one of a couple vids I uploaded that night). I was playing copyrighted material in the demo, but no song played very long before moving on and the audio (as it was off camcorder) was horrible.

    About 12 hours later, it cleared. Fairly certain it was flagged and reviewed. If that's the compromise, I think I could deal with that.
