look like? it is a 99.9% clone. it would be like Chevy cloning a Ford Mustang but using a different layout on the dashboard.
Apple always has legal protection on the physical design of their products as well as the rest of it. they went after those people that came close to ripping off the old CRT iMac look and stopped them. this is a blatant rip-off of Apple's design. even if you hate Apple, you have to see that.
the 970MP is a G5 chip, and according to the story there was info related to that chip. the new panel shows support for up to 4 processors. they also dug up references to the 970MP. in theory it would be possible for 4 physical processors to be supported i guess... but odds are the 2 x dual core 970MP is what we will see first.
the powerbooks were just updated, so they won't be touched till fall at the soonest. Apple stuff is rarely updated in less than 200 days. if they dropped this support in now, it might be safe to guess it is for something sooner.
i am sure they all applaud you for your "buy now" attitude.
on a serious side, i guess it's more home users that fear buying a machine and then the new one coming out 2 weeks later. not that their machine is slower, but they have some distance in their pissing contest. as for prices dropping as new hardware comes out, Apple offers a degree of price protection for that. there are sites that offer some idea of what hardware is older and maybe due for an upgrade... but i guess the real fuel to the fire of the rumor sites is rabid Apple fandom. it is not all people poised with Visa cards in hand to buy something.
oops.... i guess it never occured to me MDs were always using that. i know they have revised the MD format a few times, but as i now see it is ATRAC, ATRAC2, ATRAC3 etc. interesting... thanks!
how many people out there have HDTVs right now? then think that most home users are not using HD cameras. even if everyone had these drives in their hardware tomorrow, it will take some time for HD cameras to trickle down to home users. odds are it will be higher end projects that set the pace for this. that kind of work is more likely to be done on an Apple then a Dell valu-boxen.
at some point what the masses buy will be important for burning discs, but i guess for now it is an issue what formats laptops will be able to play? if Apple, Dell etc etc sell laptops that can only play BlueRay discs and not HDDVD it might matter? if i could pick up both formats in the store, i would obviously buy the one i will be able to watch on a laptop.
one format is a lot cheaper to make the discs, the other has much larger capacity. that is pretty much what it boils down to. both are good formats, and better than what we have now.
look how well Sony got that to take off in the USA
i type this as someone who has a few pieces of MD hardware and actually likes it.... though i think most people that use(d) minidiscs liked them. i never bought pre-recorded music but used it to replace cassettes.
Apple's cut on a song by song basis is variable really. if you use 1-click, or buy one song at a time then each song at 99 is another charge on your credit card (unless you use gift cards or PayPal). from Apple's cut they lost a certain amount to the credit card company.
where you heard that Apple makes 1/song is probably a guestimate after the above mentioned credit card usage fees, server fees, and all their overhead (lawyers to keep the iTMS open etc).
that would explain why the store is barely profitable even after something like 300 million songs are sold. if this theoretical method is insanely simple, it might lower Apple's costs significantly.
i would guess Apple would be fine with giving up the iTMS as it is if this new system would work with the iPod. Apple has said the iTMS is there to sell iPods. which can be taken a few ways, but one is that nobody else seemed to have a valid music store with music that worked on the iPod, and was easy to use. they HAD to make their own music store, since nobody else was capable of doing one right that worked with iPods and Macs. unlike napster2 etc, Apple's store can barely break even and it will be ok because it supports the incredibly profitable iPod division. some business using the store AS their main business would be on this ice with these profit margins.
i have one of the G4 Sawtooth machines with the odd FW plug on the motherboard. if i did not have my machine sideways on my desk i would have run a little extension to put the port on the front panel (i don't have the internal Zip drive in the extra bay). i guess it was never officially explained, but i guess Apple thought internal FW drives might catch on or something.
good thinking maybe..... if nothing else waiting for 10.4 to come installed will save you $129-$149 (not sure what 10.4 will cost).
though sometimes right after the new OS ships they will take existing stock of hardware and give you a boxed version of the OS for free. sometimes........
10.4 will be shipping well before the Mini gets revised, unless some major software issues come up.
the current mini ITX board will not fit inside the Mac Mini's case if you are trying to get the same footprint.... remember when Kevin Rose from TechTV tried to put a windows running thing in the Mac Mini case? he used a pre-release nano-ITX mobo. This intel mockup is an empty plastic box with a wristwatch glued to the front. while Kevin could not fit in an optical drive, he got a lot farther than Intel did. on top of that the Mac Mini has some extra room and an unused internal firewire connection that this week sparked speculation of possible future revision, or that the rumored built in iPod dock was in the plans at some point.
recently they started working with those Keyspan remotes. you plug the USB cable for the receiver in the Airport Express's USB port and it will control iTunes on the main machine. you can often find a refurb one for $99 if that makes it more affordable.
as for other people making routers with streaming... there are other devices than can get streamed audio (IIRC) but they are not the same type of multi use device that the airport express is (and more $).
and make sure you are running current versions of iTunes, and that your Airport base station or router or whatever supports Rendezvous (zero-config).
if it's not something silly, then it's your actual network not liking rendezvous.... that's worth figuring out for more than just the ability to play the iTunes game.

that would be great! it might be in the works actually. the new version of keynote can export presentations as flash. if they are not working on it, hopefully they (or someone else) will take your idea and run.
it exists now, and will be cheaper in March

belkin makes a card reader that pops onto your ipod to dump pictures to, and in March Apple will have a $29 (US) accessory that will allow you to connect your ipod to your camera via USB and suck down the images.

this makes the iPod Photo even more useful. i know the one card adapter exists, but it was expensive........
"The new iPod Camera Connector is an optional accessory that enables customers to connect their digital camera to iPod photo and import their photos into the iPod. By simply connecting the iPod Camera Connector and a digital camera, customers can easily transfer digital images to their iPod photo, providing tremendous storage space so they can take more pictures. Imported photos are immediately viewable on iPod photo's crisp color screen, and can also be brought back to iPhoto(R) on the Mac or various photo applications on the PC. The iPod Camera Connector is expected to be available in late March for $29."
my uncle was just in town recently and had the plans to the house he is building. they are putting sockets under the roof overhangs just for christmas lights and they will all go to one or two switches. on one hand it seems silly, but on another it makes a world of sense.
as for everythng else maybe you want to try to keep some conduit space open for the future. honestly who knows what we will be using for TV or internet in even just a few years. will everyone have fibre in the house? will coax be gone? will CAT5 cable be old? is today's CAT5 cable going to be good enough for tomorrow's speeds? i don't know how much it matters in a house setup, but cable is rated for speed.
you might as well plan for ethernet everywhere. wireless is easy, but ethernet is cheap to do from the start. if you put something along the lines of an Audrey http://audreyhacking.com/ in the kitchen, it would be nice to have the wires ready to go.
they have both? i have not gotten gas in NJ in about a year or so but last i was there it's still all full serve. it's funny when NJ people come to PA and realize most gas stations here are 100% self serve and they are just confused how to use a gas pump. it's amazing how often you see it.
the state of New Jersey has said more than once that the main reason they will not allow self serve gas pumps is that it will cost people their jobs. it's also a strong reason many people in the government do not support a flat tax. it will put a TON of people out of work (IRS staff and related support, as well as CPAs etc...).
honestly it's stupid to keep people doing worthless jobs just to keep them employed. you would think somebody can come up with something useful for them to do.
you can sacrifice a PCI slot and put in a 3rd party card. i know they will acknowledge large drives. in the situation of an older G4 tower (100MHz mobo) you can get a good boost from adding an ATA133 card (like the one Sonnett makes). you can use the built in drive support for backups or something that do not need the size/speed. not optimum, but not a bad fix.
MacAddict had a thing a few years ago where they took a G4 400MHz AGP sawtooth (100MHz motherboard) and added an 800MHz processor and an ATA133 card and ATA133 drive. the new drive gave their benchmarks as much of a boost as the processor upgrade (in most tests). i'm sure it's in their archives online. i have no idea when they did this, but i remembered the info because i own a G4 400. i am guessing almost 2 years ago?

that's the first of a long line of releases and whatnot on the day.....
hey that's a bargin..... the single processor Mac IIfx cost $10,000 in 1990 and it was not even powerPC. it had a 40 MHz 68030 chip.

it's not literally a FireWire plug, but an unused connector on a card near the back of the Mac Mini... and the Mini already has FW on the back.
