  1. Re:Intel needs a show pony on Apple May be Intel Show Pony · · Score: 2, Interesting

i wonder if Intel feels that they rely too much on M$ to show their power? the general public will never understand Linux on Intel benchmarks to show the power of Intel chips.

when OS X is humming on Intel chips (it sounds like it will be sometime in 2007 before the towers and Xserves switch) they can put an Intel chip running OS X next to an Intel chip running MS windows. any pokiness on one side can be blamed on the OS.

i am sure they also like powering what is considered the cutting edge personal computer company. for their market share, Apple gets a LOT of headlines and that can only help Intel's public profile.

i think it's funny a little while before the announcement there was the mockup of a Mac Mini clone and Intel said they will have Intel powering something like that in the future. who know how right they were! i am guessing around June 2006?

the first true democracy where every person (despite gender, race etc) had an equal vote was on some of the pirate ships. go figure.

there were other forms of democracy going back in history, but many had restrictions, or worked more like a republic. part of the problem being to actually get every citizen (they would let vote) to be able to vote 1,000 years ago was just a mess. mix in a little corruption and it just gets worse.

  3. other Apple developer releases..... on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger for x86 Leaked? · · Score: 1

the other developer releases for OS X have been made so they can not be upgraded with non-developer updates.

meaning if you have the dev builds of 10.4 (or whatever) when the official version ships you have to wipe that drive and reinstall the shipping product. you can download the updates to the developer builds (not sure if they track who downloads that), but when the final thing ships you will have to get another copy.
then again the actual OS X for Intel will not run on regular PC hardware... so if this story is even true, you will only have a limited time to keep current. the longest these boxes are allowed out in the wild is the end of 2006, but i do not know at what point they will stop doing updates for the software on them.

wouldn't there be driver issues if somebody tried to install this on their home windows machine? i would think it will only work on limited hardware, if it really works at all.

they have made hardware that uses PPC chips that can not run the Mac OS. there is open firmware or boot rom stuff missing on the motherboard. that stuff does not live in the processor, or on a drive. granted yellowdog is a legit company and had no interest in making machines that booted OS X or OS 9, so a bunch of crafty hackers would be another thing.

just because the processor may be the same as another PC it does not mean the motherboard is, and there may be some key non-open things on there to require OS X to boot. i don't really know though, i would guess with Darwin it may be easier than ever to "emulate" Aqua on an unsupported box.

i was wondering how IBM would keep up with Apple's orders (which they have had trouble doing, let alone making faster chips) AND pick up the console game work. i had read IBM is building a new Power/PPC plant a few months ago. i don't pay enough attention to know if that is still happening.

there is something ironic that the new Xbox will use PPC chips, and the dev boxes are G5 towers... while Apple is getting cozy with Intel. i would not have seen that coming a year or two ago.

i don't know what that means over there, but in the USA you do not have to pay tax if you are selling your own stuff. if you are running an online store or something it is a different story. if you sell an old laptop or a pair of skis then you, in theory, already paid any required possible tax on the item and do not have to again. i think if the item went up in value then you are maybe supposed to pay tax on the increased amount of value.... but for individuals i don't know about that.

i guess the laws for vehicles are different too..... for some reason you have to pay a tax on the amount of the sale when you transfer the title (at least in PA we do).

all that being said i hope we don't get that kind of tax. as of right now i don't see George Bush or the Republicans pushing for it. they have been mostly against internet taxes hoping that SOME part of the economy will do well.

you can probably also track down the audio because people download and play the mame files, and if i remember right you can get the audio from them. it's not a compilation CD, but it would be the actual audio files.

makes you wonder how the show failed so fast. was it because it was on friday nights, or because it was shown out of sequence (the pilot being shown last) or is the TV rating system flawed enough that they may miss a whole demographic of people that use VCRs/TiVo to catch shows.

there are some very specific issues for parody uses, but i think he would have been ok. it's another medium, but shows like Saturday Night Live use the parody loophole to do all their spoofs of movies or TV shows. they do not get permission from anyone, and they profit from it.
