that's the hardcore solution to incar music and more.
but if you just want music for your commute and use the same iPod while at work or in the gym or mowing the lawn or whatever then it makes sense to take it with you. if you drive to the movies, you do not need to take the iPod with you, or a restaurant or food shopping or something like that.

i used to play the game with a tape adapter and power line going to a portable Cd player (or MD player). it sucked. i either didn't use it or spent a few minutes hiding and unhiding the stuff every time i got out of the car. it was enough of a bother that i bought an indash minidisc player.

to someone with a BMW the money is not that much when you compare it to the simplicity. if they want a dask mounted dock they can buy the icelink and get the same features. that does not cost too much either (about $200 i think?).

having the device stashed in the glovebox so there is no fiddling around seems nice to me. then again i am a person that gets in the car and goes. it drives me up the wall when people take 5 minutes to settle in before driving away, and another 5 to gather themselves before leaving the safety of their rolling cage. maybe it's a personal issue.....

unfortunately i don't see a standard coming. icelink has existed for iPods for a while now and works like this BMW adapter. there is also an Alpine one. it's possible there is something like this for non-iPods.

i know the back of my head unit has RCA inputs then a weird Sony link cable that is intended to link the head unit with a Sony changer. unless a sony device is hooked up (or some adapter bought) the RCA ports are off.

if your iRiver has the option of an inline remote then it seems very possible this does (or can) exist for your device. another bonus of the BMW thing using the port where the iPod would dock is that it gets juice from the car, so the batteries stay alive.

well it's also the chip's design. the Apple (and IBM/Moto) designs (and AMD to some extent) "do more work" per clock cycle. that's part of the reason some are better for some processes (though software is key too). think of it like a racecar vs a truck. a racecar revs really fast and flies, but carries one passenger. a truck revs lower but can tow a house. if you had a relay race of the two that had to transport 300 people across a distance the truck could win since it could haul everyone in one or two trips. it's the same way the G5 (or G4) tries to "do more" with every clock cycle compared to Intel just trying to go really really fast.

Minui Coopers, Harley Davidsons and Triumph motorcycles for example. they take it to an extreme (somepared to Apple), but they know every vehicle they make will be sold right off. that's a nice place to be.
the delay on the new powermacs has def been processors. it's possible there are other components, but Apple and IBM admitted there were issues at the IBM chipmaking plant that caused problems for supplies getting to Apple. it was the chip that is in the current Xserves and rumored to have been in the G5 tower revision. now the speculation is that the G5 tower may hop right up to the next chip revision alltogether.
