  10. possible? kind of exists now for cheap.. welding on Laser Injures Delta Pilot's Eye · · Score: 2, Interesting

you can get a welding helmet that autodarkens when you arc. they are about $50 and change fast enough for you to not go blind, and run off a 9volt battery.

if you know nothing about welding, that is one issue when you are learning. knowing where the electrode is in relation to the work and getting it close enough to arc, but not to stick. normally you kinda peek then drop your helmet and go for it. the autoshade helmets let you see what you are about to weld and when it gets bright they tint fast enough to protect you..... the tinting is extreme, but under the plasma light youu can see your work.

it's possibly something like that can be used for lasers as well as any other type of super bright blinding light. maybe the lasers are too tricky to trip the sensors, but if they can make the helmets that cheap, and there is a market for it in planes... i bet someone can figure it out. it might help fighter/bomber pilots too. it has to throw their vision to see things explode in front of them... maybe?

  12. you have to catch them first to shoot, try x10 on Home Defense, Geek Style? · · Score: 1

you can have the coolest gun out there, but waking up to a broken window and stolen stereo means theya re long gone.

my car has a factory alarm that's not the best, but even when some knucklehead sets it off and i wake up, run to the window i never see anything. i usually throw on my boots and run outside an am yet to catch someone. even if i am in deep sleep, my dog knows it's trouble and barks the instant the car alarm goes off. my point being that even if i had a gun ready to go, i would not have anyone to shoot. that is of course ignoring the legality of running into a city street with a gun shooting someone for stealing a crappy car stereo or a car with 170,000 miles on it.

also the post was about their mom..... if they don't live at home then them owning a gun won't help out mom.

x10.com has some DIY home security stuff. you can do things like have a motion detector trigger an alarm or turn on a light in the house. lots of people have motion detector floodlamps outside but if a motion detector triggers a lamp inside somewhere they might think it's an awake person in the house. they also have a fake dog barking device that can be triggered with motion detectors. they may sound fake right in front of them, but from outside it sounds like a dog, and it also will alert anyone home that something might require a peek. if you run the X10 software with the cameras you can also capture the images when the camera detects motion in the driveway. they are not the highest quality images, but the cameras are cheap and wireless. you can even have them posted to a website so you can check on her house for her.

we had motion detector set up so a lil 5 watt bulb came on inside when someone crossed onto our porch...... not security as much as knowing the mail/UPS/FedEx people were there leaving us treats.

how many people run an Apple OS (or Linux) has no bearing on the quality of the product. your statement is a vague clouded viewpoint of the Mac userbase. it's a fact that Apple breaks new ground left and right with hardware and software. If they were such a non-issue why would Dell, Microsoft and others spend so much time trashing them and not just ignore them? with 3.x% of new computer sales they are no real threat to those guys, but their innovation keeps everyone else in check.

ThinkSecret.com was the first site to pick up on the new iPod with some solid information, and one thing they kept saying was that Apple would not be using a press event to show it off, just some unusual (for them) way to publically get the word out to the masses.

ALSO there are rumors from the same sources that a revision to the iPod mini is coming in August. i guess it is known the manufacturer of the mini's drive has made a 6 gig drive (or has one one the way very very soon now?).
