  1. offloading dev work on RMS on APSL · · Score: 1

It seems to me that is what ESR et all are pitching to companies: Let your user base fix bugs and help you with the development. Depending on the licensing, that's not a bad thing. But from the stories I've read about the Apple announcement, it seemed that it was their main goal to siphon off developers to help them fix their bugs. I certainly hope they modify the license to address some of these concerns.

What I wish Apple would also do is release the code (if it's still around) and the specs for all their M68K platforms (or even Newton). The hardware is all obsolete, so it's not like it would hurt sales of their new stuff. But it would certainly help the Linux m68K team. I like my SE/30 running debian and I would certainly like a version of Linux that would work on a Powerbook Duo.

  2. Gnome is a disgrace??? on Village Voice on Gnome GUI/Linux · · Score: 1

What part of gnome in particular?

I still have a libc 5 RH 4.x system and it seems to work ok for me. I just downloaded all the source and compiled it in the order that was given on the web page.

I must odd. I always get the tarballs and compile. Other than extracting stuff from a redhat source rpm, I haven't used rpm since the first time I installed linux on the machine.

  3. Can Win9x run on a SMP box? on Ask Slashdot: Is SMP worth it? · · Score: 1

I have a SMP motherboard in my computer and I was just waiting for the prices of PIIs to drop before replacing my Celeron. However, if I can get a Celeron 370 to slot 1 converter that has the SMP mod, I will go that route instead.

This machine will be used to run Linux about 90% of the time. However, for the few times that I need to boot into Win95, would it matter that I have an extra processor? I know it won't use it, but I don't want it to screw things up either.

Does anyone have experience running Win95 on such a machine? Thanks.

What part of SD is known as Silicon Prairie? Is this a term that someone made up since I moved from there in '95? I know Gateway was located in N. Sioux City, but calling that Silicon Prairie sounds kinda lame to me. I'd rather be working here.

I don't mind the cold, either. It's not as bad as people seem to think. What I think is really funny is seeing people in the South practically wearing parkas in the winter when it's maybe 30-32 degrees F. That's about the time I zip up my windbreaker.

This is a very positive development and I hope there is a driver available for my Matrox G200 in the future. I've been meaning to go through my OpenGL books, this will help inspire me to actually get Mesa and start working on some 3D stuff (haven't used gl in years).

The college that I went to was about 10 miles from a Stategic Air Command base (they even invited junior & senior engineering students for tours of the planes and simulators...I got to sit in a B-1B). A friend of mine used to be in the AF and knew some of the technicians at the base. On of them got a speeding ticket on the way to work (speed trap near the base entrance). Later, while working on one of the planes, he discovered that he could see the cop that gave him the ticket. So he decided to test the piece of electronic warfare units he was fixing to fry every piece of electronics in that police cruiser. =)
