thats what I was trying to state. if activeX or some other windows only format begins to show up everyware on the web, it will be a very bad thing for alt-os's. theres alot of people who dont use beos couse the browser doesnt support java or whatever. what if your jobs web site used activeX or your online bank. not having a browser with active X support would annoying to say the least and thus new users who have grown dependant on MSs browser will be turned off by linux, beos whatever. this already has happend, I dont know how may times ive heard things like "I dont like linux couse it cant run IE or NS sucks "
I bet sun doesnt even relise what they just did, more likly then not MS is going to drop java in the next release and replace it with something of there own, as it stand right now , what 90% of people on the web use the newest version of IE that has has java, now if IE no longer includes java , that will put the number of java users down to what Im guessing 15%(I'll assume some people will d/l suns java).Web sites are no longer going to write for it as pritty much anything less then 25% of the market isnt worth the effort. and more likly then not switch to whatever IE has even if its activeX. forceing other OSs even farther away from a "modern" browser. (bad news for alt-OSs good for MS).
I never Liked java, I though it was slow buggy and used too much ram , it doesnt run anybetter on my new k7-900 as it did on my 486-with p83 overdrive. I for one will not download java, esp if sites stop developing for it. and Im sure Im not alone. However, this can be very bad news for alt-OSs if everyone starts writing for activeX, the lack of a browser with active X support will drive new usesers away from the OS. But its also possible that AOL will use NS6 that alone will couse a great shift in the "browser wars"
Couldn't someone pursue a class action lawsuit against the recording/film industry that takes the consumers right to ownership as trampled by these industries shifting of medias?
In other words, if I bought Led Zepplin IV on 8-track, why do I have to pay (Full Retail) for it on tape, then again on CD, and someday on DVD audio? I bought the rights to own it, right? Why doesn't someone stand up for all consumers and pursue this? I want my &*$% money back!!!
you have the right to convert that 8track to whatever format you want curent laws say that as much. but to say you shud get a ultra-high quality dvd-music cd for free couse you paid for an 8track 20something odd years ago is abit too much
You dint buy the compleate rights to the album you bought the rights to the 8track version of it. if you burn it to a cd you still have the 8track version to it , in cd format

when you select view as thumbnails in winme/2k (theres a way to do it in 98 useing folder properties) it displays all the imgs win supports as thumbnails, and creates a thumbnail file thumbs.db, even on a large set of very large files it only took seconds to do on a k6-2 500, and even less time on my new k7 -900
Microsoft is a poor example to model your business on. Name one other company that has been successful using the Microsoft model, and then maybe Apple can model themselves after that company
um try the entire video game industry. they loose money on hardware, and make it up with software sales and lisence fees.
or how about thoes digital vcrs , that also dont make much off the system and gain it all back on subscription fees.
web tv is the same deal, anyone can make a webtv box, but MS gets the subcriptions (im not sure if the hardware manufacture gets any % or what)
to say you cant make money on software alone is silly.
do you realy think anyone would use linux, if they had to buy all new hardware to run it, ok bad example;)
yes, that may be so, but its still alot more steps then just , rightclick, copy, and im a win2k guy btw, linux copy and paste is horid
I never said I knew it all, all I said was selecting text , right click copy is easy and more convienant then, select-file/copy or command-rightclick copy, as far as the macos file menu system, that may work for you but I typicly have more then one app open at a time and find it a pain to switch tasks just to see the file menu (I rarely overshoot the file menu )
on a side note the last time ive used mac os was like system 7something
drag and drop isnt copy and paste, with copy and paste, you can keep pasting the text and in any window not just ones showing, its a bit hard to drag text into an app you havnt opend yet
Picture this, your making 6$ an hour opening envolopes for some cheap ass company, mostlikly barle making your rent. of course you have to open like 1000per hour entering all the data into the computer, have a disgruntaled bos breathing down your neck, and then to top it off you end up opening lots of emptys and even worse ones with strange crap inside. whos ever came up with the idea of sending junk mail , may not even see it or have any clue as to what is going on
The most reasonable solution would be for Apple to open up. Open up its hardware specs and software

the same way MS makes money, the OS, charging people up the scsi, for outdated hardware isnt going to work much longer , macs used to be good hardware , scsi drives, high color screens, ect. now there cheap ide drives , old ati video cards that were not good 3d cards new much less now ,
I see on the apple store some new models with geforce2mx and 733mhz cpus, bargin basement equipent for the pc world, costing upwards of 3600. if apple realy wants to get anyware, they need to alow clones, charge for the bios if they must, release a version of OSX that allows X apps to be ported to it easly (hey instint software library) and pritty much follow the MS model of money off software, not hardware and apple may have a chance. but apple wont do this, jobs is in a curent mode of , releasy shoddy equipment that looks cool, so that the slowly dieing off mac diehards with more money then brains buys a mac keeping the company afloat a few more years, hey maybe MS will just buy off the company next time
I have a three button Mac mouse, and the other two buttons are not useful at all. One gives you contextual menus without holding down CONTROL and the other allows you to create group selection boxes. There's just no point to three buttons when the whole system only requires on for everything
Quick! copy and paste any amount of text without touching they keyboard, or how about useing a photo editor like photoshop useing 2 or more buttons and tell me its not a major convienance. just becouse you can do something without buttons doesnt meen its ideal, hell you can set up win9x to not even use any buttons you can hit "enter" insted of clicking, that doesnt make it a good idea to do so there have been times ware ive gone hours on my pc without touching the keyboard thanx to that second button
Why? you ask, think about it, already developers write software for the mac but not linux. all it would take for a linux port is a simple recompile for the most part. That may be why apple created OS X, so development will continue as the *nix community grew and apple shrinking more and more everyday.
Or I could be totaly wrong, OS X may be propritary enofe to make porting inpossible ( we all know how much apple likes an open platform)
in case you havnt noticed the compleat lack of copy protection in windows, you can install windows 3.1->9x->2k without even useing the original CD and even as far as using the "software key" from any MS product, ive used the key from ms works to instll win98 a few times. ive install windows from cd,harddrive, zip, and a few other ways. MS isnt about to start copy protection now. the more people who use windows the better for them even if they dint pay for it (i.e. IE) assuming MS did do this, all that would happen would be more of a move to other OSs like linux,BeOS or others that are cheaper. ms would lose money and share of the desktop market and ms isnt going to let thet happen
sony like most companies are trying to market these things at people who are ether scared/illiterate about computers, well guess what thier going to be just as scared of these things
I bought my parents a webtv for X-mas, teaching them to use it was not a easy task. as soon as my mom opend the box and found like 6-7 cables she dint want anything to do with it. once I hooked all the cables up. and set up the servis and all it took about 2 hours to get her to touch the keyboard and another 5-6 hours teaching her the basics of web browsing, and 5 days to teach them how to "log-on" every once in a wile I have to awnser a question like "why doesnt this web site look right" (web-tv does some funky things with imgs , being how it cant scroll left/right).
I think if they realy want these things to take off they need to aim for the people who know how to use a computer , posibly wireless ethernet from webpad/puter, or howabout a wireless dumb terminal that way you could use (nearly) all software thats on your pc. once people get used to the idea of webpads and technology advances to the point of a decent browser on one it can be "intergrated" into the non-pc useing world
Which is about all it takes to install 95% of the stuff out there from source...
Its not so much a matter of difficulty as it is time. I dont know about you but I dont have a day and a half to compile X or kde or whatever. another advantage is that you can compile libraries into the binary , so you dont have to force people to download the libs on top of the download for the program
they have basicly no overhead, other then the cost of cd production and paying a handfull of programmers to create install scripts. as for support costs, the end user has to pay for it.
the only real flaw is that anyone can download a redhat iso and sell it cheaper, and sometimes better then redhat (mandrake) they are there own rival.
Today's CD-ROM drives may not be able to read it. The floppy CD should be at a plastic protection (like de 5 1/4 floppy disk). And for that, you will need a different CD-ROM drive.
No big deal on buying a new one, since today's CD-ROM drives just work for a few months anyway.
mostlikly, or maybe an adapter that lets it be read in a normal cd-drive
What kinda sorry ass cd-drive you have there I bought the cheepest 48x drive I could find over a year ago(25$) and it still works like it shud

Isn't Sony a major player in the RIAA? If so, then it would seem a little hypocritical to be simultaneously lauding them for the PSX2 and condemning them for their RIAA-related actions. True, I share the belief that the RIAA is bad, but if we're going to be against it, we need to be *against* it; this includes not supporting member companies.
The same sony who makes everything from cdrw drives and disks, mini disks and mp3 players.
Sony is in it for the money. I personaly think there only connected to the RIAA just to say that they are "Hey our mp3 players are 100% legal couse were part of the RIAA"
