IBM has a 1.4 SDK/JRE available for PPC Linux. Installed the RPM on my Debian Powerbook via Alien and it runs great, although no Mozilla plugin. I had a link to an article about how to get Java to work in Mozilla but the site has been down for awhile.

Microsoft is just doing this at the browser level though. For example, if you send an email to a misspelled domain, it would never go to Microsoft's servers, however now, it would go to Verisign servers, and who knows what they're going to do with those addresses.

This breaks much more than just Microsoft's spillover page. Hurting the entire internet is not a good price to pay for sticking it to Microsoft just a little bit.

Actually, Microsoft had passport.com "stolen" a few years back after it expired. The person did just do it for a joke, and gave it back.

I'm not sure what the circumstances were in this case, but my registrar Gandi reserves domain names for 30 days after expiration. After that, they are available for someone else to register.

I'm not sure how Microsoft does it now, but I imagine they have recurring billing for a number of years on their domains now, or paid many years in advance.

  13. Re:"shame about the resolution though..." on Slashback: Bandwidth, Animation, Gruvin' · · Score: 0

The max resolution is 1024x768. I'm quite happy with it on my 12" iBook, but raising the resolution on the 14" model could've canniblized sales of the TiBook, and also using a higher quality screen would've raised the price out of the range of a "consumer model".

Also, those who found 1152 on a 14" screen to hard on the eyes, would've had to use a non-native resolution. Granted, I have bad eyes, but anything above 1024 on my old 15" CRT was a pain. So others may have the same problem.

The main gripe seems to be the lack of video mirroring, which means that when you hook the iBook up to an external monitor, it can't act as having dual displays, so the resolution is limited to 1024. Not really a feature the target audience really needs, but even a geek like myself is happy with 1024 at 19", using it as my main machine, replacing a P3 600. All the other features and the nice price really offset any limitations it has IMHO.

The iPod has 32megs of solid-state memory as a buffer. It fills it up then spins the drive down so it only has to access it every half hour or so (depending on bitrate of course).

I imagine it's rather light, being so small, it uses a drive smaller than a laptop drive. The only thing preventing me from buying one is the price.

Yes it does, at least in the last build I used (RC2).

I did notice XP booted faster than 2k, but it wasn't nearly as rock solid, I had fewer problems running 2k beta 3 a few years back. I don't think there is a single compelling reason to upgrade from 2000.

Yep, VirtualPC. There's even an OS X native version in beta right now. Just be sure to get tons of RAM, OS X is a huge memory hog without having to deal with large amounts allocated to an emulated machine.

As for Linux, I'm pretty sure you could run it inside VPC, but I'd just use a native PPC Linux distro. Mandrake 8 works nicely, and even the iBook sound works in the some of the more recent kernel versions.
