if i only knew that 6-9 months ago.. i wouldn't have had to get a stolen copy of win3.1
on the other hand, feeling sorry for microsoft???? i feel guilty for feeling sorry that i ripped off microsoft for a little.
hm. *wonders how much money it would take to get on this list..*
i was kind of caught between not-having-enough-to-eat and exhaustion.
i suppose to sum it up would be that i suspect this is a plot to try to milk free-software/open-source of money it really cannot afford to lose, therefor threatening it..which in turn threatens the umbrella philosophies such as gnu/gpl/whathaveyou...and while these philosophies are not exactly pragmatic[in my opinion] they are better :
we don't need them to work, we only need to try to make them work...
i'm not sure if i want to get into *that* though right now...mabye i will later...
great. we need more people like you. if more people asked that very question, we would all be better off. cnn.com - wtf are they trying to say? wtf are they doing to me? why?!
anyways i suspect it's repressed sexual tension, resentement, and a combination of starvation and burnout.
i always considered shakespear dirty limericks, but mabye that's just me and my unenglish ways.
anyways...if the art is crap - only the author will listen/bear it. and sure enough, eventually after having piles of junk and worthless peices of art created, if there is any talent at all...they will start making better stuff. but either way - if it's junk the popularity of it, as we both know will be effectively 1 - the author
the problem is that art, as with religion is none of the laws damn business - why do we need a government to tell us what we can / cannot say/write/create/listen to? is that what you are implying---that we need the government to approve all art, lest it be junk? or perhaps a simpler solution, especially when we now have the internet, to let people decide for themselves what they figure is great art. even if hypothetically a person lived a good portion of their life with junk-brittainy-spears-quality-dubbed-and-ripped-of f-music...if they ever heard great music, i think
they would noice it. but who cares? it's not one work, it's the whole, imho. we don't believe stairway to heaven to be a masterpeice unless we determine harmony, and pattern-based dischord, not to mention sound, beautiful, and so on.
anyways on originality-shakespear is an excellent example : most of his work, as i remember being taught it, wasn't his. it was ripped off from other playrights, almost word-for-word[if not that then definitely plot-for-plot]...and lo! now all of us enjoy the works such as romeo and juliette [including No Effort Online's great interpretation of it!]...which we would not have otherwise been exposed to had shakespear not plagerized the script from some other guy who now never gets the credit which in popular copyright law he should be given credit for. i say, who cares?? he's long dead anyways...but even if he were not... his story has touched billions---mabye it will even touch trillions by the end of its influence. this sort of an effect is what seperates
the great from the not-so-great...and oh wait...now we have reasons to make art again and so we don't need copyright...right? obviously you aren't in any way artistic/creative, or you may have figured out at this point that you don't need encouragement from others to be like that --- Trying to create a system of artificially inspired people by filling the successful ones with money should *not* be sought.[with the possible exception of the gangsta rap...i think this is an interesting case...but i digress]
let me rephrase:
they should *not* HAve the first chance to profit off of their art. they shouldn't profit from their art...at all! this is what is wrong with the entire system! we are trying to create profit for ourselves instead of trying to create art...and this is sick! i mean if you get money for you art, great. but don't expect it, no matter who you are.
we don't need to reward artistic creations. greatness in art is a reward in itself:P
i wanted to imply that the artist did NOT want to get the poem to canada - your standard greedy - if your not in my personal circuit you don't deserve to hear my art style which i'v eseen so so many times before..i'm saying canadians just would not have access to this stuff. people who can't afford 40$ / cd or a 3000$ computer[and who are not smart enough to get a cheep 486 working] may not have access to the p2p nets...so what follows? they won't have access to masses of art out there--in a sense a divide between the people who can view art and the people who can not. i am trying to bridge this gap, so the have-nots can be haves in this sense. now obviously th is example isn't quite as important or clear because everyone should be able to get on the internet, but there ARE examples out there where art is restricted to those who can afford it / who have access to it - in a sense this is what is being discussed is it not????
in the meanwhile, if the artist did NOT want thepoem in canada, and i moved
need to elaborate how copying someone else's art without improvement, attribution, permission, or even commentary can possibly be considered "art."
the subject matter in discussion was art to begin with was it not? improvement is a hard thing to do : ask the local radio stations who play 24/7 classic rock. permission? is what keeps good art from people who would experience it,..commentary, is unnecessary. but not everyone has access to all expressions worth being a part of, or viewing, or _whatever_ : i'm wondering if by the time i can afford a Real Computer that the p2p's will have been shut down, and i'll end up living without exposure to any music at all, except for the aforementioned classic rock...
if i take a poem, written in america, and i use it, claiming it as my own, in canada, and gain thousands of fans and admirers in canada, that poem had an effect it would not have had otherwise : why be so picky ? why do we need to be worshipped for our art? unless we are in some way insecure of it perhaps?
would be better seen as a tabboo art form in which the expansion of meaning without permission of an author, who has not yet developed enough to understand why this has to happen for the better of us all:/ no sidestepping.

you know exactly what's going on. Count me in, as another pseudo-anonymous supporter. even though at the moment i don't have a computer that can stand p2p/and have no mp3s...as soon as my skillset+Cashflow amount to being able to provide a p2pserver/some files online...i will...and continue to do so until i'm killed.
fuck the riaa! arrrr! *raises fist*
is it necessary then, to only be able to apply the term 'killer app', if i understand it correctly, to things allready in past tense?
i say that audio via p2p is a killer app - but wait...at what point did it/will it become so? when napster first came out? when napster was taken down and replaced by gnutella/whoever else?
or is it yet to come when we can, as stated elsewhere in this thread[i'm really sorry i'm not linking- im still new with this linux thing and i havent yet figured howt he copy/paste works yet:/ but kudos for the reference]...have encrypted, untracable, distributed bandwidth/peer2peer service with highbandwidth and whatnot---in a sense being able to download anything, [specifically movies, music & media] for free, at any time, in moments. this, if realized i'd say would be amongst the 'killer apps'...but wait...? when will we say it is...? will it be when the Riaa/mpaa are thrown into the obscurity of western history? will it be when jack vilente[sp?] and the people in charge of the riaa are burned at the stake? or will it be when all computers [or 90%? or 80%?] that are not servers providing infrostructure use it? when we see a group of powerful, non-political[ie, not run by the USian corporate government...[ unification servers providing requests from one network to another[ie, running limewire, search

i hope your kids prosper. it would make the world a better place:D.
in the meanwhile i'm sorta agreeing - except on one point.
a lot of people, specifically in the psychology feilds tend to view the damage done in the first 10 years of life to the potential-to-grow or whatever more or less complete.
i dissagree. while trends tend to be reinforced unless counteracted, it is to me very feasible that one could, from 8-16 completely change a kid around[to something, not necessarily something better] from where the kid came from.
and then after that, ditto 16-24. it'd like to further highlight the : this may or may not be a positive change : should there even *Be* a positive out there, but either way i think half a life of X whatever X is can completely undo everything...if met with enough force...etc
sorry ifthis is choppy this is my first slashdot post from my newlyl installed first-time-in-use-linux:D
didn't the entire "taking responsibility for the rest of the family's actions" thing kind of phase out somewhere in the past 200 years or so???
why do you see this as such a good thing?
why should parents have to be responsible for their children? parents main goal is to ensure that thier children are surviving and can either adapt to the world arond them or are strong enough to survive in a world not yet adapted to : the job of parents is not to "adjust their children to fit in with society," lest they be held accountable for such rebellious actions...this would be not only against evolution[and thus doomed to failure of your genepool]...
parents should be responsible to the extent that they are directly involved. if they are in no way involved with something...they shouldn't be responsible[ie, if i start burning & pillaging small towns, my parents should not be held responsible...etc ]. unless you are going to draw a line in the sand somewhere and tell me that there is a definite age when "kids" are "adults" and their parents are no longer responsible for them... but even with this...the kids would be a lot better off if they were responsible. imagine! you, as a kid, go out, and break some corporate...say macdonalds...windows with bricks. you are going to have to pay for those windows, as you are obviously not yet able to flee the country. this act of paying will give you a clear idea [whatever it may be] of how the world works[that it isn't a freeride, someone somewhere has to pay for broken things, its a lot of effort to do anything big, fun will bite you in the end...and of course the golden rule: don't get caught], etc. either way whether you in the future would throw bricks or not --- this would have an effect on this descision[unlss you were too intoxicated to remember...]
parents should defend thier children, and give them the tools to survive, adapt, or overcome. nothing more, nothing less.
nevermind that but it's way to strong. my great grandfather appears to have denounced his family. my grandfather i think had issues with him. my dad was a hippy[ie not exactly got along well with his 'square' parents] and then theres me, some sort of cyberpunk-too-late-freak-beyond-words that for years just didn't get along with my family. do you think it's genetics, perhaps, that no one, in generations on my male side of my family has been able to get along with their parents???? i think it could be. this would mean that it is possible that *nothing* my parents could do[short of a [late]abortion] could prevent me from doing whatever it is that i'm going to do, whether this be murder, selling drugs, mass genocide or ripping mp3z. they should not be held responsible for something they have no control of[and havn't for some time]. it'd be different if i were ripping mp3z with a family computer or something but this isn't exactly what your implying, i think...
and while i do think that parents should be more involved , generally, with their children, i think there is a limit somewhere...and this sort of thinking would push most parents far beyond this limit to the sort of 'grounded for life, chastity belt and all... you aren't leaving this basement until you are 35, and your not having sex until your 40' sort of thinking that i'm afraid will ruin many more young men and women to come...
anyone up to see it? anyone? it'd be very 1338 if there were more than just one of us seeing it - who knows if it's actually playing? email at the music god 1 at crypto mail dot com:)
IF you have Cisco Routers [ and software / manuals necessary ? ] Do NOT throw them out as they age. they will still be useful to us , later on...and who knows...they may be worth something someday...? but honestly... don't toss them...
am i being incoherant or unreasonable in some way?
everyone should be connected by now. i don't mean everyone should be connected with the latest-Raedon-wearing-pentiumV... i mean... everyoen should have access. public library terminals, and the like are great [except that i'm not allowd in the public library local - they wouldn't give me a card at the time because i had no house/livingspace. go figure. ]
375$ in a Lifetime so far.[ or around 100$ a year... ] mostly due to dialup.
there are *not* cheap ISP's local. at least that i've found. while i do agree with Supply&Demand and the Drive-For-Profit-above-all-else that is the current markets... there is a lot you could do with free internet. i mean, think of how much getting connected to the net costed in the past, long distance charges, on top of whatever the ISP charged... 60$ a month [standard ?DSL] or what i'm paying now [25$ a month/Cable"Lite"]... is NOTHING...and yet look what happened as the price came down abit.
people acctually connected.
interesting point about the 'and you don't have time'. i'm not really sure what to say about that
...i suppose i just like being able to email peers elsewhere in the world [at roughly the cost of postage mail]...and being able to google for uknown things wheras before i got to be just ignorant. and one day
one day
i won't be on win3.1 any more...[nevermind the entire reason i'm past DOSSHELL5.0 at all is because of someone i know online:) ]. and of course...anyone who thinks they can go to university, here at least, without a connection to the internet is fooling themselves.
i'll imagine for a moment that the "maleness" and "femaleness" are not to begin with manufactured ideals that, unlike left or right-hand-ed-ness are not given upon birth through genetics...
fair enough : what is it, exactly that females would play in a game? what kind of female are you looking for? i've seen girls that range from the theywantedtheirentirelivestobethestereotypeofSeven teenMagazine-AndNowTheyAre type [who are just generally annoying]...the smart cookies who would benifit from puzzle games [or "strategy"/"Tactics" games like StarCraft or FFTactics[i havn't played that yet:/]]... and then you'll have the ones who are into more doom&gore stuff than i am. nevermind everyone in between and around. So assuming that these girls aren't all girly... what kind of dynamics in a game would they *want* ? a storyline thicker than DESTROY PENETRATE DOMINATE ? or mabye
just mabye... girls have the gift of knowing there is more to life than this lame hobby a lot of us computer geek males have in toying with electronics and electronic games... they have better things to do with their time...like...idono . i havn't talked to one in awhile.
a) i can't get linux to install, mostly because of b) my hardware is about 10 years behind the rest of you, so i shouldn't be seeing this for a little bit
but i've been wishing for some transluceant windows - [add multiple mice&keyboards' it'd be perfect!]... something where i can use two different colour schemes[darklight darklightcolour2] and refocus my eyes quickly between them so there is no putting-down-the-book-and-taking notes or moving-my-head-to-look-from-the-book-to-the-google -prompt. it'd be great for people trying to Read digital books and do other stuff at the same time...unless i have it wrong somehow.
monthly isp charges are sick. if they started offering a free 300 BAUD service, they would have a lot of subscribers
in the meanwhile, computers, are cheap. you should be albe to pick a free one up...large corporations throw away anything less than around 200Mhz -and this is good enough to connect to the internet with. take it from me : looks like the grand total is coming to 11 computers 4 printers 3 monitors at 195$, although my isp charges have been
$375 [but i'm getting looped here...]. cheap used and free computers, are out there.
am i the only one here who went to both an elementary AND a highschool where they would not allow students on the computer unless you were with a class and a teacher at the time? my highschool bought a multi-million dollar lab, and then just let it collect dust
speaking of labs that collect dust, the University of Regina media lab [a collection of very, very nice mac's]is 80-90% unused at least...they just sort of sit behind a glass wall and collect dust.
and of course, that and isp's i've found charge way too much for the service they give...28.8 does not cost 60$/month to host[specially when i troubleshoot all software/my end user end stuff myself:/]
...and of course this insane [mostly microsoft driven, partially isp driven] idealogy that if you don't have THE newest hardware you won't be able to connect to the internet...this is insane. I connect to highspeed cable using a pentium I 133mhz running windows 3.1 and linux appears much much easier to work with. you don't need a 5 GHz AMD with 8GB RAM to check your email...mabye if you turned off some hotmail advertisements and found a descent text email, you could reasonably connect with 300 BAUD or so...[and email i would suggest is the main use from what i've seen of the net...]...as for other uses? what of a text based icq? irc? www[*cough"Elinx"*] EVERYONE should be on the internet and have access by now, but due to people just junking hardware, being afraid of being out of date[when in reality ALL OF YOU are out of date...unless you have military/industrial grade equipment]...and just letting existing technology sit...arg it makes me sick!
if i only knew that 6-9 months ago.. i wouldn't have had to get a stolen copy of win3.1

when, if at all, is p2p to be accepted amongts these killer apps? or have i, in my ignorance, missed the point, and p2p has been a killer app for some time now?
i hope your kids prosper. it would make the world a better place :D.
..etc
sorry ifthis is choppy this is my first slashdot post from my newlyl installed first-time-in-use-linux :D
in the meanwhile i'm sorta agreeing - except on one point.
a lot of people, specifically in the psychology feilds tend to view the damage done in the first 10 years of life to the potential-to-grow or whatever more or less complete. i dissagree. while trends tend to be reinforced unless counteracted, it is to me very feasible that one could, from 8-16 completely change a kid around[to something, not necessarily something better] from where the kid came from. and then after that, ditto 16-24. it'd like to further highlight the : this may or may not be a positive change : should there even *Be* a positive out there, but either way i think half a life of X whatever X is can completely undo everything...if met with enough force.
didn't the entire "taking responsibility for the rest of the family's actions" thing kind of phase out somewhere in the past 200 years or so??? why do you see this as such a good thing?
why should parents have to be responsible for their children? parents main goal is to ensure that thier children are surviving and can either adapt to the world arond them or are strong enough to survive in a world not yet adapted to : the job of parents is not to "adjust their children to fit in with society," lest they be held accountable for such rebellious actions...this would be not only against evolution[and thus doomed to failure of your genepool]...
parents should be responsible to the extent that they are directly involved. if they are in no way involved with something...they shouldn't be responsible[ie, if i start burning & pillaging small towns, my parents should not be held responsible...etc ]. unless you are going to draw a line in the sand somewhere and tell me that there is a definite age when "kids" are "adults" and their parents are no longer responsible for them... but even with this...the kids would be a lot better off if they were responsible. imagine! you, as a kid, go out, and break some corporate...say macdonalds...windows with bricks. you are going to have to pay for those windows, as you are obviously not yet able to flee the country. this act of paying will give you a clear idea [whatever it may be] of how the world works[that it isn't a freeride, someone somewhere has to pay for broken things, its a lot of effort to do anything big, fun will bite you in the end...and of course the golden rule: don't get caught], etc. either way whether you in the future would throw bricks or not --- this would have an effect on this descision[unlss you were too intoxicated to remember...]
parents should defend thier children, and give them the tools to survive, adapt, or overcome. nothing more, nothing less.
nevermind that but it's way to strong. my great grandfather appears to have denounced his family. my grandfather i think had issues with him. my dad was a hippy[ie not exactly got along well with his 'square' parents] and then theres me, some sort of cyberpunk-too-late-freak-beyond-words that for years just didn't get along with my family. do you think it's genetics, perhaps, that no one, in generations on my male side of my family has been able to get along with their parents???? i think it could be. this would mean that it is possible that *nothing* my parents could do[short of a [late]abortion] could prevent me from doing whatever it is that i'm going to do, whether this be murder, selling drugs, mass genocide or ripping mp3z. they should not be held responsible for something they have no control of[and havn't for some time]. it'd be different if i were ripping mp3z with a family computer or something but this isn't exactly what your implying, i think...
and while i do think that parents should be more involved , generally, with their children, i think there is a limit somewhere...and this sort of thinking would push most parents far beyond this limit to the sort of 'grounded for life, chastity belt and all... you aren't leaving this basement until you are 35, and your not having sex until your 40' sort of thinking that i'm afraid will ruin many more young men and women to come...
anyone up to see it? anyone? it'd be very 1338 if there were more than just one of us seeing it - who knows if it's actually playing? email at the music god 1 at crypto mail dot com :)
*looks at his hard drive* 1993. go figure.
IF you have Cisco Routers [ and software / manuals necessary ? ] Do NOT throw them out as they age. they will still be useful to us , later on...and who knows...they may be worth something someday...? but honestly... don't toss them...
actually i think it does run apache now come come to think of it...honestly though, what do you expect - html 1.0 ?
am i being incoherant or unreasonable in some way?
... is NOTHING...and yet look what happened as the price came down abit.
:) ]. and of course...anyone who thinks they can go to university, here at least, without a connection to the internet is fooling themselves.
everyone should be connected by now. i don't mean everyone should be connected with the latest-Raedon-wearing-pentiumV... i mean... everyoen should have access. public library terminals, and the like are great [except that i'm not allowd in the public library local - they wouldn't give me a card at the time because i had no house/livingspace. go figure.
60$ a month [standard ?DSL] or what i'm paying now [25$ a month/Cable"Lite"]
people acctually connected.
interesting point about the 'and you don't have time'. i'm not really sure what to say about that
...i suppose i just like being able to email peers elsewhere in the world [at roughly the cost of postage mail]...and being able to google for uknown things wheras before i got to be just ignorant. and one day
one day
i won't be on win3.1 any more...[nevermind the entire reason i'm past DOSSHELL5.0 at all is because of someone i know online
i'll imagine for a moment that the "maleness" and "femaleness" are not to begin with manufactured ideals that, unlike left or right-hand-ed-ness are not given upon birth through genetics...
n teenMagazine-AndNowTheyAre type [who are just generally annoying]...the smart cookies who would benifit from puzzle games [or "strategy"/"Tactics" games like StarCraft or FFTactics[i havn't played that yet :/]]... and then you'll have the ones who are into more doom&gore stuff than i am. nevermind everyone in between and around. So assuming that these girls aren't all girly... what kind of dynamics in a game would they *want* ? a storyline thicker than DESTROY PENETRATE DOMINATE ? or mabye
just mabye ... girls have the gift of knowing there is more to life than this lame hobby a lot of us computer geek males have in toying with electronics and electronic games... they have better things to do with their time...like...idono . i havn't talked to one in awhile.
fair enough : what is it, exactly that females would play in a game? what kind of female are you looking for? i've seen girls that range from the theywantedtheirentirelivestobethestereotypeofSeve
a) i can't get linux to install, mostly because of b) my hardware is about 10 years behind the rest of you, so i shouldn't be seeing this for a little bite -prompt. it'd be great for people trying to Read digital books and do other stuff at the same time...unless i have it wrong somehow.
but i've been wishing for some transluceant windows - [add multiple mice&keyboards' it'd be perfect!]... something where i can use two different colour schemes[darklight darklightcolour2] and refocus my eyes quickly between them so there is no putting-down-the-book-and-taking notes or moving-my-head-to-look-from-the-book-to-the-googl
i hope they keep going with it.
monthly isp charges are sick. if they started offering a free 300 BAUD service, they would have a lot of subscribers
in the meanwhile, computers, are cheap. you should be albe to pick a free one up...large corporations throw away anything less than around 200Mhz -and this is good enough to connect to the internet with. take it from me : looks like the grand total is coming to 11 computers 4 printers 3 monitors at 195$, although my isp charges have been $375 [but i'm getting looped here...]. cheap used and free computers, are out there.
am i the only one here who went to both an elementary AND a highschool where they would not allow students on the computer unless you were with a class and a teacher at the time? my highschool bought a multi-million dollar lab, and then just let it collect dust
:/]
speaking of labs that collect dust, the University of Regina media lab [a collection of very, very nice mac's]is 80-90% unused at least...they just sort of sit behind a glass wall and collect dust.
and of course, that and isp's i've found charge way too much for the service they give...28.8 does not cost 60$/month to host[specially when i troubleshoot all software/my end user end stuff myself
...and of course this insane [mostly microsoft driven, partially isp driven] idealogy that if you don't have THE newest hardware you won't be able to connect to the internet...this is insane.
