    Damn Democracy....

Let's really go for representation. Why not get rid of the election of representatives. *gasp* What you say. Anti-democratic. You betcha!

Democracy is 51% telling the other 49% what to do, a.k.a. two wolves and a sheep deciding who will be dinner. Liberty being a well-armed sheep. Anyways...

Instead of voting, we draft people to Congress. Similar to jury-duty. For 2 years you find yourself serving the people for a reasonable stipend. 2x avg salary should suffice.

Then the people elect 100 representatives to server a second term in the Senate. These do not make laws. Rather they rescind laws by a 1/3 vote (as proposed by Heinlein).

Lastly, we elect one Senator to serve a 3rd term as President.

While it may not be direct democracy. As I stated, I am not convinced of the merits of democracy. I am however, convinced of the merits of representation. And this system would do so. While at the same time ending most of the political machines. A single term, then you're fired or retained for Senate. No need to sell your soul for years before obtaining a national seat. And suddenly, Congress would go from being 90% lawyers to having a diversity of plumbers, teachers, engineers, computer programmers, CEOs, etc, etc.

It would be a significant improvement over our current system IMHO.

Most urbarn/suburban areas now offer 6mb/s in America.

  6. Re:Speed vs. Usage on The Net (According To Akamai) · · Score: 1

    1) Does the study record simply the speed of connection? Because I highly doubt all of China's citizens have access to personal internet connection. Not every American does, but it's pretty darn high. It's easier to have a high avg speed if only a select portion of the populace has access.

    2) Usually, these studies fail to account for geography. For example, a densely populated modern nation like Japan or Hong Kong will score high because most of their population is within a small region and thus less infrastructure is required, maintained or updated.

In the U.S, we have internet out to many areas that would be considered "rural". For many nations (ie: Canada where 90% of the population lives on the southern border beside the U.S.) the ranking will be higher than the U.S., because we're covering a lot more suburbs, & rural areas.

So what we really need in order to rank a nation are two additional statistics. Population density and percentage of population in the most dense areas. Why is this important? Canada has a lower population density level than the U.S., but a larger portion of it's population lives in it's denser areas.

Combine that factor with speed, and percentage of citizens with internet access and you'll find out who really is the top dog for providing it's people access to the internet. I'd wager that America wouldn't show too badly in that measurement.

How many HTML sites royally suck on my iPhone. TONS. Especially ones with multiple cascading menus, huge link lists, etc, etc. To exclaim that Flash apps made a few years back don't work well nor handle certain motion behaviors is a pretty lame argument. A site not made for mobile use is usually going to be a poor mobile experience. It doesn't matter if it's HTML or not.

Yes, the iPhone taunted the whole internet. But to be honest, I consider it an article reader browser for most sites. It's great for popping open a site, zooming in, and reading an article. But for actual use of many websites, it's just a PITA. This is not a fault of Apple, rather it's a fault of a screen not much bigger than a finger length.

A great example is going to a video player and complaining the menu controls aren't very usable. Well gee, you think. Does it matter whether such was made in HTML/Flash/HTML5 - nope. If the web app is NOT designed for mobile, the experience will suck. You will have to zoom in, use a control, zoom back out. LAME.

But as more apps are designed to recognize and deliver a mobile based experience. This will be come less of an issue. Does Flash lack the touch? Or does a 2 yr old desktop focused Flash app lack a touch experience. There is a difference.
