  1. Well... on Word of the Year - "Truthiness" · · Score: 1

"Seriously if you can understand it, it works. Grammar Nazis, you can all burn forever in Hell. We can blame Dr Samuel Johnson for introducing language fascism, which remains utterly unnecessary to humanity."

Sometimes Grammar is REQUIRED for understanding. What about this as a written command?

    "Loose that nut"
    "Lose that nut"

I know that grammatically it would be "Loosen that nut", (future tense imperative) but if you're advocating a free-for-all, then I will take liberties in my examples and use adjectives as verbs :-)

Is this one of those lateral thinking competitions? Well if you have at least one follicle then you're 0% bald (since you're not bald), but after that final little pluck - bang - 100% baldness.

I wouldn't do it myself, Immac or a razor would be better.

  3. But Truthiness *is* a word on Word of the Year - "Truthiness" · · Score: 1

That's how language evolves, people coin new terms to describe new things. Truthiness simply describes a state of affairs that we didn't think we needed a specific word for before.

I mean "Television" as a word didn't exist in 1850, does that mean it's not a word because it (the word) was only invented (relatively) recently? Of if you think that the Latin and Greek roots of Television give it some gravitas (Tele = Far, Vision = well, Vision) then what about "Jukebox"? or perhaps "Puck" as in Ice Hockey?

Others have already said that the US provided assistance to Britain during the Falkands war, what I want to point out is that a strict reading of the Monroe doctrine (that European powers must stay out of the America's) would indicate that the US should have stopped Britain. They didn't, and the explanation of why the Monroe doctrine didn't apply was that Britain wasn't being the aggressor, but simply defending an existing territory.

  6. Terminology (offtopic) on U.S. Refuses to Hand Over Fighter Source Code to UK · · Score: 2, Informative

"Prime Minister Blair" is very much an Americanism, I'm fairly certain it's not a title that you would use as a prefix. Being British I'd call him Mr Blair if I was talking to him (well, I can think of a couple of other things to call him as well, but they would probably get me arrested saying them to his face). I think when he's announced it's something like "The Right Honourable Mr Tony Blair, The Prime Minister".

  9. Rules cannot be chosen on Newt Gingrich Says Free Speech May Be Forfeit · · Score: 1

But you can't choose the rules or dictate the terms under which someone fights you.

That's the point of being a terrorist. They have a grievance (real or imagined), and know that in a conventional war situation, they would lose, because the opposition (be it the USA, UK, Spain, Russia) has superior military force. So they choose not to play by those rules, and instead rely on non-conventional warfare, which gives them the only possibility of success.

You can't fight terrorism with soldiers, tanks and guns. Every terrorist you kill has the possibility of recruiting more people for their cause. You have to remove the their grievance - which may be difficult if it's imaginary. If you're not willing to do that, and taking the military option to its ultimate conclusion, you get Genocide.

  12. Not Ridiculous at all on EU Gives Microsoft 8 Days Until Fines · · Score: 5, Insightful

For the umpteenth time. Microsoft was tried and convicted in Europe for Anti-Trust violations, just like they were in the states. Part of the remedy was to document the protocols to allow comptetitors software to interoperate with Windows servers.

Microsoft refused to comply with the remedy as decided by the court. The court then decided to fine Microsoft. Microsoft refused to comply with the remedy and refused to pay the fines. That's where we are at the moment.

So the EU isn't against Microsoft because it's American, it's against corporations that break the law, get convicted then ignore the punishment that has been decided by the court.

    Now do you see?
