Definately try again. If you care that Strider rode with the Rohirrim and fought for Gondor, along with the history of kings from Elendil and Isildur, you may enjoy the elf-human roots of Elrond and Aragorn, the houses of noble men whose scions founded numenor, Sauron as a lieutenant of Morgoth. Speed read the Aiunadale and valaquenta, if you have to, that may help get you to the interesting escapades of Feanor and the elves.
I whole-heartedly agree, you gotta read it more than once to appreciate it. The same could be said of other huge tomes. (the bible, les miserable) The first time you get lost in the myriad characters and kingdoms, but you like, hate and pity Feanor and Turin while loving Beren and Luthien. Unfortunately, it is hard to grasp Doriath, Nargothond, Hithlum, Brethil, Amon Rudh, Gondolin, and all the other lands, along with their respective lords. The second and third time through you really come to know them and see the stories as a whole, complete history. It is quite beautiful and bittersweet, just as the Music of the Ainur fortells. Once you know the Silmarillion, Unfinished tales is fascinating, as you get a better feel for some of the characters. I especially the story of Turin Turambar, one of the best-written peices of fiction, albeit a bit unpolished and inconsistent. The essay on the istari, as well as the retelling of the hobbit from gandalf's point of view were excellent, too.
It seems they have somethink like this, like the eyepiece monitors on those wearable computers. They have to be closer than 25cm, which is, iirc, the approximate minimum focal distance for your eyes. I don't know specifics.

CB rulz!
you wouldn't believe how many are already addicted to it. People are already trying to buy and sell items for real cash. (a la evercrack)
ps. I can't wait until 8:30 today to see the two towers. 8 hours!
Keep in mind the northwest passage almost follows a "great circle route" - a way to trim distances on a round world. Measuring along the equator only works if you live near the equator. Not having looked at the geography recently, it seems that a trip the northern and western european ports to East Asia through the northwest passage would be a great route, assuming that they can keep it clear of ice. Titantic, anyone?
Funny, I caught the movie on TV a while back. It wasn't great and did some dumb things, but I liked the whole mystery and "what-if" feeling that I get with a good post-apocalyptic story. I thought that kevin costner did pretty good with the whole reluctant, inadvertant hero thing. So I went and bought the book used and read it. I thought it was really flat. Boring. Some cool stuff, but I had to force myself to finish it. (that says a lot about my reaction to a book, I've read huge long books like War and Peace, Les Miserable, The Silmarillion, Dune multiple times, without tiring of plots, subplots or lengthy descriptions.) I just didn't care about the postman or his girlfriends. Anyway, while I am not a huge Star Wars fan, Brin doesn't seem to be the expert story teller he makes himself out to be.
I must agree whole-heartedly. My Nerf Powerclip is an accurate, fully-automatic weapon. It is very accurate around 20+ feet. I mounted a little laser to the side, and I could draw a red bead on the back of someone's head.... and BAM! Either a double tap, or just fully unload 10 rounds in 20 sec. It was a thing of beauty. The suction darts stuck half the time, so that was cool, and the whistlers flying past one's ear were too cool. (unfortunately, our company kind of dissolved, so my toys are home now:( )
I agree that these blacklists can be annoying. I could be wrong, but my alma mater's mail server which I use, byu.edu, seems to be blacklisted by earthlink.com and maybe a few others. But, when I send messages, I never get a response that these are denied. I send an email, and it doesn't get there, no errors or anything. I was doing some ebay business and I had to use a free internet email site with 4 pop-ups per page load, just to communicate with others. Really annoying. Anyone have any insight into the blacklist mess, perhaps how one can test it or find out?
Morons? F-14's are Navy Planes. F-16's and F-15's, the Air Force's primary fighters, aren't seen too much on aircraft carriers. They Just load 'em up with gas and send them halfway across the world to the nearest airbase.

I guess now that Peter Jackson and company have made LOTR mainstream, it will work?
Here's hoping, I got excited the first time it was announced!

Either that, or they are distributing some of their work to mars, earth doesn't have enough computing power
Maybe we can throw this at RIAA as another justification for making mp3's of their cd's. Think they'd believe us?
