I'm looking forward to any hardware MS produces, they have a fabulous track record for hardware.
Intellimouse: A huge favorite for FPS heads since Qtest. Now outdated, but clearly a legend in its own.
Intellimouse Explorer: Still the best optical mouse on the market and the new 3.0 version is much improved.
Flightsticks & Gamepads: Superb durability and simplicity, compatible nearly every game, excellent Linux drivers (not thx to MS). I would never venture with a Logitech or Thrustmaster again.
Keyboards: Light, tactile, comfortably angled keys, function buttons that can be reassigned in many OS's incl. Linux.
Warranty: I buy all my MS hardware at Staples and get instant replacements whenever needed, though I've had no problems to date. I did return an intellimouse, but that had more to do with spilled beer than faulty hardware.
I may have my beefs with MS software, but all of the MS hardware I've used has been first class.
Why would I want to get my butt kicked by 12-yr-olds with nothing better to do than hone their skillz all day?
Do I sense some bitterness after having your innards strewn all over the wall in Q3/CS/TF/SOF.. (pick one)?
Assuming all l33t gamers are ~12 is a bit weak. I'm nearly 30 and I can't tell you how many times i've heard: "You f$$#$in kids are cheating" "I'm sure you've been playing since you got out of junior school at 3:15"
No we're not cheating, no were not 12 yrs old.
The fact is that you're not very good at the game you're playing and clearly unwilling to invest the time to develop decent skills... and that's just fine.
But to blame your current lack of skill on the prepubecent state of online gamers, is a poor excuse.
How many times do we have to get the same old shoot-em-dead, destroy everything that moves, kill everything, watch stuff bleed and blow up guts all over the place type games like Doom? These are really the same games, but just with face-lifts.
Obviously you've been playing all the new FPS in DM only mode. Questions: 1) When was the last time you revived a fallen comerade with a needle so he could shoot flames down a hallway, clearing your way to cap zee documents? (RTCW) 2) When was the last time you sat tailgunner in a fighter/bomber while your pilot dropped bombs on unsuspecting American tanks, then downing the American fighters that come to shoot you down? (BF 1942)
Hmm, well for your All In Wonder you'll need to use Gatos. I've had less than sucess with it, but that has more to do with my limited understanding of Linux than Gatos itself.
While the automated setup you describe might be possible with extensive VFL knowldge and some tricky cron jobs, there are several steps (stopping the camera, editing, etc.) that would really require some hands on work for the average user (me included).
I am confident in Linux as a video manipulation tool, and it's inheirent stability leads itself to massive video crunching/editing jobs which I would never risk to an XP workstation. Also, video compression seems to be much slower on Win32 on an identical system using an identical codec. Beleive it or not, I have never had ONE A/V sync issue attributed to Linux, on the other hand, when some wacky process starts runnning in windows, 4 hours into an encode, you're fuct.
I have your card, the ATI TV Wonder. It captures crisp, stereo clips at 640x480 at a full 30fps, no frame drops.
Have a look into BTTV (a driver) XawTV (a player) and a variety of recording software, I prefer Nuppelvideo which can be converted to virtually any format (including DivX 5) using transcode.
The bttv stuff is included in the kernel source all the rest is only a brief compile or an apt-get xxxxx. It takes a little while to get everything running, but once you do, it runs completely stable and uses very little resources. Say goodbye to that awful ATI capture software. The finale being that all these clips can be edited using Cinelerra 1.0.
Time to start archiving Trek, SNL and The Osbournes?
Just a quick reminder to all the naysayers wondering why one would run Linux on an Xbox in light of supposedly cheaper, faster systems that are available:
Those "other" systems that are ~ $300 (likely a bit more) don't have a Geforce 3! This isn't a castrated TI200 version either. This card alone is worth $75 USD if you find it on the cheap. Stores would be selling boxed GF3s for at least $100 on avg.
Yes it's a slightly modified GF3 made specially for MS, but it still hauls ass.
That's where the value is my friends. Add that GF3 to your bargain do-it-yourself systems, and I guarantee you're well over $300.
Bottom line, Xbox @ $300 is a deal if you're planning on Linux gaming, Lucious X 3D and occasionaly playing some of billys games.
I'm afraid to say you don't know what the hell you're talking about, let me elaborate: Weren't those magnetic? No they're CDs. You're thinking of those huge video disks from the mid 90's, they were optical as well.
Hardly anyone uses them anymore They're very popular.
Most people do not have hardware that can read them Any PC and most modern DVD players. See compatibility list here.
Most people alive today have probably never even heard of them let alone seen them I've heard of them, so have you.
The recording hardware is NOT nor was it ever cheap and ubiquitious as CDR has become. Again, they are CDs and can be burned on all CDRs.
VCDs are just mpeg2/mpeg1 movies burned using a specific directory structure with a few simple config files that tell the player what to do, where the scenes are, etc.
Many people are posting on how DVDs are better than VCDs... while this may be true in some cases, in other ways they're the same thing
DVD = 4.7GB CD = 650-700MB
(NTSC) DVD = Mpeg2 video 720x480 VCD = Mpeg2 video 352x240 - 720x480 (xvcd)
Were really talking about storage capacity and video resolution as the main differences here. My point being that a VCDs with educational content can be produced with DVD video quality, at a cheaper price and still maintain compatibility with standalone DVD players.
That looks like an IRC client connection request (port 6669).
If you do use IRC on a regular basis, do a whois on your normal IRC server for that IP, find the nickname and see if you can contact the person. If all else fails, contact the admin for the IRC server and have the person booted.
I have at least 400 unique ips spreading these requests in my little corner of the old @home network.
Wouldn't Roger's/Cogeco/Road Runner etc. be saving bandwidth if they actually contacted the owers of the infected servers and had them run a simple update? I'd do it myself if I knew the people behind the 24.x.x.x ips.
I get hit wit this crap every 5 minutes. Has anyone found a way to filter or deny these futile attempts while still maintaining a public apache server?

Hey, I like my made up explanation better.
Ignorance is bliss....
waiting for dvd recording technology to mature = waiting for a DVDR drive that doesn't catch on fire
i like your understated logic.
while (dvdburning=fire)
{
burncds
else
buydvdburner
}
New new DVDs are a bit lighter and the drive mechanism will spin too fast, eventually overheating.
It's like taking a propeller off an outboard motor and flooring it.... weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee BANG!
Fun stuff.
This gives a new meaning to the term:
"Burning a disc"
Honey, don't you smell something....
is a solid Slashdot story. :)
Geeky, retro, sentimental and a somplete waste of my time. Ahhh the geek inside smiles
How does this post get +4 Informative?
I can hardly understand what the guy is saying? Is it just me?
its the ATI Xillion a STB on a chip, nice pice of kit
Did ATI make a chip with STB? Some sort of kit?
I need the universal translator.
Huh? Try Barrel Nut Connector. That's what BNC, in the RF sense, has always stood for.
Yes I'm sure there's a Bulgarian Nympho Club, but thats beside the point.
Everyone should read the parent and reflect. Is this a modern form of natural selection?
Moderators don't let your jewels shrink and mod down a perfectly honest post.
"Nuff said" & "'cept"
These are simple colloquialisms. If you're calling me an idiot, just say so.

They sell a Linux version of M2-Edit Pro, but it's command line only and very expensive.

Im sorry?
..you're saying the time these guys have..
...I guess it all depends on how much your time is worth...
Which one is it? My time or the XboX hackers?
Sounds like you just feel like telling all of us how important you consider your time.
If this is so, why are you sitting on Slashdot arguing with me?
*touche*

Here you go:
ftp.kernel.org

The have every version of linux ever released! w00000000t!
Don't give this out!
and get thru the thousands upon thousand....snip....of images that are labeled DCP_00389 or some otherwise useless name.
Well you could try this new fangled organization tool, you probably already have it installed, it was a joint MS,*NIX and Sun collaboration:
mkdir summer_pics_2002
mv *newpics* summer_pics_2002
Now that wasn't so hard was it?
