  1. Re:Does this make Google Voice illegal? on Mississippi Makes Caller ID Spoofing Illegal · · Score: 1

I have a personal Asterisk server that I've configured with a call-forwarding feature that routes incoming calls to a variety of phones so I can answer calls from the most convenient device at any time. In order to relay the incoming caller-id information, I have to set my outgoing caller-id to that of the caller so that my cell phone shows me the caller's caller-id and not my server's caller-id.

I do not intend to decieve, default or mislead, but my server is making calls (to my own phones) with other people's caller-id all the time.

The whole point of a standards protocol like SIP is that regardless of what client you or your friends are using, you can all still talk to eachother! Imagine if you had to use the same email client that everyone else uses - we would all be using Outlook Express! With Skype, you're locked into the proprietary Skype client using their proprietary protocol and don't have the freedom of chosing the *best* client for your requirements.

  7. What about RSS Feeds? on Ten Most Used BitTorrent Sites Compared · · Score: 1

How can you possibly compare all the major torrent sites without reviewing their RSS feeds? These days RSS feeds are essential to automate television downloading (broadcatching), and I can't believe they didn't even bother to mention them.

The two most popular browsers (Azureus and uTorrent) both support RSS feeds. However with uTorrent you may have to filter your feeds through RSSatellite in order for feeds from mininova, torrentspy, and some others to work properly.

Not anymore. Now you see some laptops shipping with external Serial ATA connectors on them hooked up internally to the PCI-Express bus. Get a fast desktop SATA drive with an external power source and you'll have much better performance than any internal laptop hard drive.

No MP3 manufacturer is going to be able to replace FM radio until their players have the ability to receieve internet radio streams via some kind of wireless net access.

  12. No Communication with other Jabber Servers? on Google Talk Available Early · · Score: 1

I was able to setup a jabber client and log in successfully, however when I try to add contacts they never get any subscription request. And if i try it the other way around (try to add my gmail JabberID to my other jabber accounts) the request never gets to my gmail account.

Is this intentional? Is Google trying to create yet another closed network? Or have they simply not enabled server-to-server functionality yet?

I'm pushing my company to switch from Yahoo messenger to Jabber - and I'd say we're about half way there.

I've gone through all the major servers during planning, such as jabberd 1.4, jabberd 2, ejabberd, and lastly jive messenger. Jive Messenger is lacking one significant feature that all the others have - server to server communication - but as a LAN only chat server, it has proven to be the best option available at the moment. (And server to server capability is already in the nightly builds and will be in the next major release)

The best IM client i've come across is Adium for OSX, but for the PC users, Pandion, Miranda, and Trillian Pro are all adequate.

You bought a $2400 TV and want to spend only $1500 on all of your audio equiptment? You've got it all wrong!

First you have to pick a decent receiver, I recommend chosing between Denon, Yamaha, and Onkyo. Spend somewhere between $600 and $1300 in this category.

Speakers.. I love B&W speakers personally. (http://www.bwspeakers.com) As mentioned by at least one other slashdot reader, the 600 series are incredible speakers for the money. Pick your 5 speakers and then figure out how big of a subwoofer you'll need. An ASW1000 or higher will do nicely. Depending on what speakers and sub you chose, your total speaker cost will most likely be under $2000.

Speaker Wire. You can get the cheap monster cable crap, or spend a bunch of money on some high quality wire. I like Tara Labs. (http://www.taralabs.com)

    Enjoy!
