    (using a registry file I downloaded from OReilly in one of their Win* annoyances articles, which has worked in every version of Windows I've used from 98 to XP)

    You do know you can remove it with a checkbox in desktop properties in XP right?

    Yes, but take a look at your system resources and see how much memory your trillian process is using

    Using the Microscopic skin, plus AIM and ICQ and a contact list of ~134, ~6 megs.

    The latest AIM (5.0) uses ~12+ megs.

    GAIM for Windows using only AIM, ~8 megs.

    One of my problems is I couldn't figure out how to disable docking to the side of my monitor.

    Menu > Preferences > Contact List > uncheck "disable docking"

    Wasn't too hard, eh?

    Its interesting to note that according to the article AOL appears to have a decent policy already in place.

    IIRC, the numerous times the CRIS holes had been opened up and hundreds of customer names and credit card numbers compromised, AOL lied out their asses and denied, denied, denied.

    One of the main reasons that AOL doesn't want to play nice can be seen at the top of the AIM window.

    My friend accidentally had his number listed in the AOL software as an AOL dialup number in our town once. Every 20 minutes or so the phone would ring with SKREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-EWWWWWWWW

    Apparently you've never used AOL. The normal means for web browsing (and this is all most AOL users use) is the mshtml control (IE) embedded in the AOL client window.

    The change in AOL 7 will be that Gecko (Mozilla) is embedded there rather than IE.


    AOL 7 has been out since October and has IE built in still, but I believe the beta version of AOL 7 with Gecko is available at KW: BETA. The major release with Gecko will be 8.0 this fall.

    That's what we call wishful thinking. Many people I know don't even have AOL 6.0 yet, and some are even using versions as old as 3.0. Nowhere near 30 million users will upgrade to 8.0 when it comes.

    but they're singling out "audio or video files." That information is content.

    I said it above and I'll say it again here. I have major doubts that Comcast will be specifically monitoring whether you're getting 10 gigs of MP3/ASF files or 10 gigs of RAR/ISO files. People reading the Philadelphia Enquirer are more likely to understand audio and video than RARs and ISOs.

    I honestly don't think Comcast will be watching saying "oooh he's downloading an mp3!" or "oooh he's getting 6 ASF files!". More likely it will be "this guy is downloading 10 gigs worth of stuff a day, let's slap $20 more on his bill." They're just using movies and music in the article because they know the average joe will get that concept, while not everyone knows what a RedHat ISO image is.

    AOL provides a valuable service. How would you feel if AOL types were flooding onto certain open source related IRC networks, or other places with generally high quality.

    I believe this has been happening since the September that never ended.

    No you don't. Just download the hacked UxTheme.dll from www.tgtsoft.com and extract themes to c:\windows\resources\themes.

    Trillian is not an AOL client. Trillian is an AOL-Instant-Messenger-capable IM client. There is a major difference here.

    There is. It's called Gamera. It's what runs the Gateway Internet Appliance.

    It's not in the menus as far as I remember. You have to manually go to Keyword: MARKETING PREFERENCES.

    And while that may opt you out of popups and emails, the fact every screen from the mailbox to the address book to profile windows to the welcome screen to chats (the list goes on and on) is littered with ads doesn't change.
