It's a cyclical problem. Mass Transit sucks because few people take it (other than the poor).

I don’t think that’s universally true. If I’m moving around in Seattle, I’m generally on transit - and the vast majority of other riders, whether on a bus or in a train, are middle class folks and young people. But there is the occasional poor person, or Hispanic person, or Muslim person...

Having talked to various people about taking transit, I have come to the opinion that many people’s objection to public transit boils down to being afraid they might have to sit next to someone who doesn’t look like themselves.

It's not universally true; but it is generally true. Seattle is a much larger city than most in the US, and granted larger cities have better public transit. I love the public transit systems in DC and New York- Seattle is also a much wealthier city than most. Go to average-town USA and the only people on public transit are impoverished, and whereas they are probably perfectly safe- they look a little scary to your average middle class suburbanite.

If you live in NYC or Europe where there are buses, trams, trains, trolleys, Puppeteer teleport pads, and plenty of other public transportation mode, then ride-sharing makes sense. However, US cities refuse to do proper policing and rather blow their wad on new sports stadiums than basic protection (it is common for non emergency calls to take 8-12 hours before they are bothered with.) So, Americans are forced into the suburbs if they value the safety of their family, and so their kids don't step outside to see a wino passed out on their doorstep, or get impaled on a syringe from some crackheads the night before.

With everyone going to work at the same time, ride-sharing an autonomous car isn't really feasible. Especially with employers demanding everyone do the 8-5 junket daily.

Instead, what needs to be done is actual police protection in cities, incentive for work at home days, and getting employers to allow for earlier/later shifts.

It's a cyclical problem. Mass Transit sucks because few people take it (other than the poor). Few people use it because it sucks. To get people using mass transit you have to make it fast, reliable and safe- to justify doing that you have to get people to use it; but people won't use it because it isn't fast, reliable and safe in most places.

Which means New York? That's about the only US city that qualifies. Taking 3 buses and spending 2.5 hours to get across town doesn't.

Depends how far out you are. A large part of New York City is covered by a fairly efficient subway that is much quicker than that if you don't mind walking a couple blocks. Some parts of the city, you'll get around faster by subway than car. If you're in an area you have to take the bus though- that sucks and those are slow and an inefficient use of your time.

Most people in the UK are fairly centred as opposed to one end of the spectrum or the other here).

It's hard to measure because it really depends on the topic to me- but in general I average in the middle (some-things I'm on the right, some-things I'm on the left). My typical voting at the polls at a major election usually includes one or two votes for democrats, one or two votes for republicans and the rest going to independents and 3rd party candidates.

I absolutely despise Trump though. If he becomes the new norm for Republicans then I suspect I won't be voting Republican much in the future.

Yeah, sure, there have been times I wish a cop had been around to witness someone doing something egregiously bad. However, everyone has done something stupid whilst driving at some point. Everyone has done something illegal, either on purpose or by accident.

I guarantee what is going to happen here is every Spurs fan is going to start trying to catch Arsenal football players making a mistake whilst driving. United fans are going to try to catch and force Liverpool players into making mistakes. People are going to target their rivals, enemies, and people they don't like... and people will get caught making silly mistakes.

  23. Stupid post is stupid.

All android apps can REQUEST the permission to record your screen. Hell, there's good reason for it in some cases: See "CalcyIV" for Pokemon Go (which reads the pokemon's stats and provides more detailed info), or even Google's own Now / Assistant which screenshots and gives information about what you're looking at.

Unless it's preinstalled on your phone (and even if it is, it might still need to request it), there's going to be this huge "[APP] requests to record everything on your screen" prompt. Then, every time it records your screen, an icon appears in your status bar by the Wifi/3G/clock and I believe a notification appears.

In Oreo, you're probably going to be reminded at least once that the app recently used it. It just notiffied me that Soundhound used my mic the other day, and that was with me actively using the app.

Additionally, apps can block (https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/133022/disable-screenshot-security) screenshot/casts.

You literally have to ignore 3-4 warnings / notifications *AND* your banking apps / password requests have to be programmed badly (it's literally one line of code) for your information to be recorded.

I've never once been asked by an app to record my screen. Nor have I ever seen any icon that looks like a "recording screen" icon. I hope that means I just don't have anything installed that records... but I'm not convinced.

For some bizarre reason I keep getting ads for women's clothing. Does this mean I'm going to desire a sex change in the future? Google knows it now- but I haven't figured it out for myself yet.

  25. That seems worse than whatever stupid shit I might say near my phone.

Indeed! So, if I chose the "show password" to make sure I'm writing it correct- it can screenshot my password and send it to a third party? If I open PayPal it can screenshot what I've spent and send it to a third party?

Are these apps only screenshotting within themselves- or potentially everything you do. This could be extremely serious.
