    I'm not sure your car analogy is apropos. You had a chance of wrenching on an old Buick. Also, back in the day, the impact of a frizbee did not trigger $4k in damage. You never get out of a body shop for less than $4k.

    Open Source is a methodology.
    The dialogue between proprietary and F/OSS is the same one that has gone on between industry and academia.
    The result should be the same: two ecosystems that cross-pollinate, if you'll forgive my free abuse of terms.

    There is no ethical obligation to a corporate entity. As a natural person, yes, I am more important.

    That is a novel viewpoint, but how does the "corporate entity" escape being an abstraction based upon employees and stockholders (if public)?
    The "corporate entity" goes tango uniform, the government bails them out, you (and I) pay for the game in taxes.

    Providers are also different.
    I'll leave my cable provider unnamed, so that I can say that their policies WRT TiVo and HDTV suck nearly bad enough to be mistaken for those of the 110th Congress.
    While the CableCard standard is supposed to be workable, we are testing a second gadget in an attempt to make this crap heap work half as well as the competition (to which we very well may switch).
    Disaster.

    With extensions and stuff that want to check for updates, FireFox can take a while.
    But then, I was trained in the...meditative...initialization fields of Emacs, so I am at peace with this.
    You get it moving, you open a slew of tabs, and life is good.
    Maybe FireFox and Emacs could one day merge...
