because I can think of hundreds of people rich or not who would be more in line for such a description of their activities, trouble is most are politicians and the like who apparently always get off free.
Frankly if Gates was nasty evil then Satan was a choir boy.
in no shape or form. Big Education is to blame. They simply keep raising their prices to soak up available financing and then market to the same that if you don't have a degree your not going to get the bling. You got part of it right with the chancellors of the school, but its the whole structure of BigEd that is wrong, if not a horrid copy of public ed.
People are kept and paid based on seniority and nothing else, it doesn't matter if you suck or use stand ins all the time. They they lard up with extras like counselors and such so they can hire their whole family.
Students are simply guided by the same people who are the problem to focus instead on another bogeyman. It is no different than some petty 3rd world dictator declaring another nation the "big satan". Best to give the populace an enemy OVER THERE so they forget the one with the boot on their neck.
When you resolve it all it still boils down to the real problem in the US and elsewhere, the political establishment, the truest one percent. They decide the winners and the losers and use your money to make you the enemy of one group or another.
I am not excusing the banks but they are only empowered by the politicians and they return the favor. The US Congress is being nailed now for insider trading and you can see the hilarity as they find excuse after excuse.
Yet come next year people will vote for D or R on the ballot and we lose yet again.
Load them up with a 5mp, preferably 8mp or higher camera and let people have fun. The problem with the iPad's camera is that its too low resolution and the form factor makes it inconvenient. These two lesser tablets are only for consumption of a limited media but the Fire has the right size for ease of use (you can slip into the pocket of dress pants easily, if not every coat known to man). Yet what they would be good at is something they don't do, take and show pictures. Yes I know phones can do that but not everyone wants to be stuck with the plans required to use them
Guess I am one of the lucky ones, I have worked with some great developers whom we farmed work too. We had two on the team over there who were better than most of the developers we had locally. It might depend on the type of work involved, my shop is on mid and larger systems and our requirements are a whole lot stricter so we don't see what others might.
Still to dismiss a whole part of the industry under thinly veiled bigotry does not serve the Slashdot community well. I guess its easy to ride along on the misery train and blame the other guy, but first we must dismiss his ability because if we did not then where we would be.
So guys, cool it with the assertion that off shore developers are not up to speed, the simple fact is there are many good developers in other parts of the world and many are far better than those who whine about them
Show me a Fortune 500 not backing up, if you find one I would be interested in what they are not backing up.
For small data sets with limited needs of retention then maybe portable drives an okay solution. However I doubt I want to find version x of file y under that system.
I backup, daily, nearly 10tb of data and it is always to tape. Why tape? Because it is portable, easily managed, and well known. That and I need so many of the things I have tape libraries to manage what is on site and off site.
Yeah I bet the problem exist in SMALL businesses but the article is implying all and it certainly isn't true. We are by law bound to keep specific data for set amounts usually measured in years. Believe me, its far cheaper to keep anything than to be caught without it.
so Occupy Iran is next?

Occupy Flash?

It sounds like a very bad Mad TV skit come to life, based on just previous stories here
On a side note: After first hand experience with those in Atlanta, all I can say is, Occupy THIS. Damn if I don't want to ever be around people like that.
they served a purpose for those who started them (an outfit in Canada of all places). The Democratic party needed something which they could take over to present the idea that there was an actual liberal version of the Tea Party. Unfortunately they did not get this. Why? Simple, it was not a true spontaneous movement, it was fabricated and being such it was susceptible to being corrupted by those who wanted it for something else.
So yeah, it only went on as long as it got GOOD press. As soon as the seedy side started being published everywhere it was toast.
You cannot fabricate a change in politics. You can certainly try to co-opt one as Republicans attempted to do with the Tea Party but the Tea Party's genuineness is provable by the fact that old school politicians (Read Washington Republicans) despise its influence.
There may truly be a liberal equivalent but we will never know because the powers that be on the Left refuse to allow it to rise on its own because they cannot allow to happen to them what the Tea Party did to the Republican establishment which is, the people are more important than the party.
We just had a recent story about how the IRS can't get its act together and I betcha they are not in worry about losing their jobs. We have more government workers making over 100k a year and 900+ over 170k a year. Do you think any are truly accountable now?
We are Greece, we just fail to admit it. When one in seven works for a government agency I think it is a clue. Protect your own is their motto.
unless of course the teacher or school claims copyright or such. Can you take photos provided you don't use flash (which the iPad doesn't have - its camera is weak but it can take passable photos of a presentation)
I would recommend something to prop the iPad or similar device up and be sure to that the microphone is unobstructed.
Your words, "The key issue is with IT workers we work at a level that is behind the software audits. And really how much is the right balance of using our tax money to make the IRS more secure?"
When your organization is so complex and unwieldy that what you state has serious weight in a discussion then you or your system is fatally flawed.
The IRS's problems are a direct result of a tax system which only exists to serve the needs of politicians and their friends. It certainly does not serve their constituents
Mostly because I wonder if any post inspection was done of this car. Was it charging when it caught fire? Usually after these tests the cars are not "drive able" so what are we truly dealing with?
I am no Volt fan, its an over priced and depending on your leaning the subsidy is too high or too low. Seeing the price of the all electric Focus it leads me to believe battery tech is not ready for prime time, or I should say in this day and age, not ready for the 99% club
Corning (or someone else) had some good videos about a day in glass... and in my view they are closer than concentrating on whats in the living room.
Simply put : TV everywhere. Being able to display what the user wants where they want it. I have friends with a TV behind the mirror in their bathroom, at first I though it was the most idiot/arrogant thing ever but if I could do it I would. However I would extend it to being able to display not only what cable/broadcast/satellite could but also display on demand whatever content my PC can get.
I would not mind a "Computer..... " speech driven interface but I think the big issue has to be the interface, how do you make it easy to tell the system to show you what you want.
I don't care for all the horror stories, believe me I can give you as many from OS X which I use on one machine at home. The simple matter is that it just works. I don't have to think about it.
in our government, especially in the public sector unions. There are more and more horror stories coming out how many retire from the public sector as DISABLED and using overtime tricks to upkick their retirement benefits to incredible values.
We have plenty of money coming in, the simple fact is we spend ONE AND HALF TRILLION DOLLARS A YEAR to pay TWENTY million government employees and their retirement benefits PER YEAR. This is all all levels of government.
Tell me we aren't Greece or Italy when one in seven people work for the government at some level.
There are two one percent groups here, those who do it on Wall Street and those doing it through public employee unions. Sorry, but my local police officer does not deserve a 100k a year RETIREMENT, neither did my teacher, let alone the politician who got it for himself and his union buddies
Its embarrassing to see it on Slashdot, let along lauded with points as being insightful. I can cherry pick opposing professions and get any result I want and it makes no difference in the discussion.
You don't do the job so you cannot claim how stressful or demanding it is. Any claim is talking out your ass. Let me give you a hint, these people have bosses too, I can guarantee that they get asshole bosses like other people do. I can guarantee they are worried about the rent/mortgage, the kids, the wife, the health care, the same shit we care about.
Yeah there are some reckless players out there but if the industry was so bad as you and many other haters claimed there would be no banking industry. It would never have survived.
The real problem starts in Washington, with the people there who sell us out everyday so that they can stay in power. You have a President who lied every day of his campaign about change, and what did he do? Put two people from Goldman Sachs into decision making positions of the US government, - including one who could not be bothered to pay his taxes.
Now tell me again who the problem is?
Karma be damned, this place is starting to suck royally. A bunch of over privileged angst ridden losers whose only risk is they don't get the good parking space at work
The sad part is that Israel has the only rational leadership in the region, they also a flash point to Obama and Co. need to keep tabs on them and to try and keep nudging them one direction.
The problem is, Obama has never liked them and now its going to be real hard to play nice. Israel won't listen and it has been apparent early on that your only as good for the Administration as to your ability to listen and do what they think should be done. Its a classic textbook ignorance of reality, thinking that just because you say something it becomes something.
If anything it shows his true thinking which is wholly unprofessional to utter to another world leader. So much for being smart, I guess arrogance got in the way.
They are about control. It is all about politicians exerting control over money so as to remain in power as long as possible. They dole out favors and punishment in the tax code to serve their needs. The worst are ideologues who don't care what negative side effects are as long as they see their dream fulfilled. Another use is to hide the true cost of this government from the people. If they were taxed directly, instead of indirectly by the embedded taxes on profits, many would be screaming for change.
Getting Washington to give up the control the current tax system has about as much chance as getting a three pack a day smoker to quit, they won't until its too late. They don't care because they are the true one percent
nor has anyone implied such idiocy, but I know strawmen are very popular here. The point is, there is no accountability in China because the regulators and the people violating the regulation are the Communist party.
For the people and by the people, just not all people. Corporations do what is profitable, you make it unprofitable to pollute and you can get some very good behavior. You put the fox in the hen house and China is what you get.
under Soviet rule. You haven't seen environmental horrors until you see what they did under Soviet rule, where not only the people bend to the will of the government so will the land. Of how production results are all that mattered, not how it was done. Where you had rivers you could not walk next to. (some might point to Cleveland and such but we ain't holding a candle to some places I have seen over there).
So, keep your derogatory and misinformed slights about the Tea Party and Republicans out of this, what you are witnessing is the same thing that happened under the Soviets in the 50s through 80s. You are witnessing so much government that it is not answerable to anyone.
Let me give you a hint, our government is close to that now, the only difference is not so much environmental impact but the damage it is doing to our society.
I don't have a catchy acronym because its not funny.
We are in the stages of being another Greece, we have grown our government beyond our means to support it. The real one percent is those in high paying government jobs. Yes I know that not all jobs are high paying in government but there are too many horror stories to just be a coincidence.
Department of Homeland Security is Department of Jumped the Shark.... Time to start axing some Departments and this is a good place to start. Ron Paul seemed to have missed one.
If this were an actual emergency most slashdot subscribers would survive just fine being that the basement is a safe place to be. Please note, your mom may stop bringing you meals which means you might have to go upstairs to witness the disaster
Yeah there hard too but many drop these classes because it wrecks their GPA which hurts their post graduation job chances as well as their scholarships.
Drop grades. Pass or Fail. You can set Fail to below a C. Get them to take the hard courses but don't punish their entire college education with GPA races.
Teachers are not overpaid, obviously some have not been looking at the salaries and benefits that they receive. In some school districts there is a pay problem but not in most. If anything its getting rid of the overpaid ones who are protected from and criticism that hurts. Combine that with a 3x as many non teaching jobs being added to the system and its easy to see where the money has gone
As in, how to invoke panic in the team? Like how many times if any did they suffer electrical/comm/breather outages? And do it unscheduled?
With 520+ days I can assume you could totally not have any contact with them for three weeks or more on purpose to see the effects. Cruel perhaps, but we don't have a great understanding of how people react. This looks a like a nice first step.

We have the head the of SEC replying when asked "why can't we fire failed regulators" respond by saying that that would harm the agency.
