  1. Look up more on The DEA and ICE Are Hiding Surveillance Cameras In Streetlights (qz.com) · · Score: 1

I didn't even bother to finish reading the summary, I have the flu and a hangover, which is turning out to be unpleasant, anyways just wanted to comment.
For the last year or so I have been working on Building Management Software (BMS).
Nice change for me since I have a long financial background, and tend to get head hunted by banks etc.
So since I am working with BMS I've started looking up a LOT more, because I need to talk to those camera's mounted in the ceiling, that fire detector over there etc. so I have just started paying more attention to shit mounted on the ceiling. There are camera's EVERYWHERE, it's actually fucking scary. I live in a 2nd world country (although I class it as 3rd, most others don't) so I can only imagine in first world countries it's even more prevalent. Do yourself a favor (or disfavor) and look up more, start paying attention to the shit above you, you will not be happy with what you find. We needed to check on a desktop PC that just happened to be deployed in my cities control center. Someone kicked the back of the PC and dislodged the network cable, usually we are not allowed in there, or more accurately I am not allowed in there, I'm a programmer not a desktop technician, but they were desperate and asked me to take a look. There were rows on rows of people sitting monitoring cameras from all around the city, from highway camera's to street camera's to camera's mounted outside public buildings and power lines. Each person had three video walls in front of them with different sized video tiles, I am not sure if that was the only camera's they could see, or just the ones they were currently monitoring, I wasn't in there long and when I started asking questions I didn't get any answers. There were easily a 100 people in there, probably more, all monitoring camera's all over the city. Most buildings have camera's in their elevators, think you are alone in the elevator and can scratch your balls? Think again, there is a camera in there somewhere. So now when I drive to work and get stuck in traffic I tend to look up, and spot the camera's. Look up more, you won't like what you find.

  2. Fair enough, the point though does remain. The only "safe" computer would be one not connected to the internet at all. All you are doing is mitigating attacks from 0 day web browser attacks, and perhaps some malware required by dodgy places when you go to dodgy websites. Perhaps decide to not go there, and the problem will go away.

That's a shit comment and it shows that you are a racist asshole. A shit hole is a temporary solution to a permanent problem. A badly run water treatment plant will discharge toxic water into the water supply. We have just been through a couple years of drought, the dams got so low there were fears of it running out completely, also the water quality dropped significantly because they were using the lowest part of the dam water, we had to boil all the water we took from the tap, just to be safe. We also bought a LOT of bottled water for drinking and cooking.

Agreed, our rivers get dumped with half treated sewerage all the time, kills all the fish and I'm sure it causes other issues as well, if the toilet can take over the job of the treatment plants you don't have to build all the infrastructure that is needed currently. This is an awesome thing to invest in. My wife dragged me to a humanure course, and I am glad she did, current methods of turning human shit into fertilizer is time consuming and you need a lot of space to do it. Septic tanks are a pain, most toilet cleaners fuck with them, even ones that are marked as being septic tank friendly, at some point they have to drained, which is when the honey sucker truck is called in and they suck all the shit out. So yeah, advances of this sort will change a lot of people's lives.

  6. It's because we are reaching a limit of how much we can shrink the circuits using the current material, the tracks start bleeding electrons (electron tunneling I think it's called) and bad shit starts happening. Clearly i am no expert, but if we want to get smaller we need to find better/different materials. While we do that it would be great if we could find materials which generate less heat while operating, which would also greatly reduce energy consumption.

At the very least if we have to let them live, we should stop them from breeding, we are just contaminating our own gene pool otherwise.

Heh, was curious so I youtubed that section of his comedy show and it's even funnier than I remembered.
"Society is very accommodating to dumb cunts, they even have weekly meetings where they all get together and sing songs, it's called a church, and they've never turned away a dumb cunt, they love dumb cunts, they don't like the smart ones, with all the questions."

I remember back in the days when if you didn't upgrade your pc every six months you could not play the latest games, I've upgraded the graphics card a couple times, but the rig is otherwise the same that I bought 5 or so years ago. Had to replace an SSD once, waiting for the raid array to fail so I can finally update that, but I have ~7 terabytes of external drives, so it's not really a problem (I have not done a tally in a while, it's probably more, but I am not sure).

  11. I imported a phone from China, it was what they call a "white label" product, at least that's what I think it called. Phone was thicker than my thumb, battery lasted 3 days between charges, at least initially. Had it for over seven years before the battery finally packed in. It still works if plugged into a charger, but battery will not charge. Bought a new phone because the OS never got updates and lack of space was an ongoing headache. Was thinking if using to play music in the workshop or something, but I have so many bloody raspberry pi's its kind of pointless, but I am a packrat, and even if it was fucked I would still hang onto it. I don't put anything but my phone into my pocket, may was well fill the pocket up a bit more for longer battery life.

  12. Valid point, I was using my wife's car (a 4x4) to go to work one day, and heard on the radio that there were protests and car stoning on the route to work, put the car into 4x4 mode and went right over the median and headed back home. Phoned my boss and said I would be working from home that day. So yeah, if landing without getting killed is the objective it would probably work. And yes, I did a stupid ass u-turn on a highway.

I would say that they have gone 3.1% backwards on data usage, although it's probably higher than that.
I can imagine the conversation, "Oh look, my phone says there is a green something or fucken other up ahead", "Oh really, oh shit we missed it, let's turn around and go back and look at the grass."
Because, you know, green foliage is as rare as fuck... or no, it's not - at least not yet.

Fuck, even pilots are looking at their fucking phones instead of operating the vehicle with their full attention. Probably why an emergency landing was needed in the first place. And if you have ever actually LOOKED at these medians they are generally designed so people can't do stupid ass u-turns on highways, good fucking luck landing on that. Just saying.

Wouldn't the same logic apply to IP packets. Who's eating that cost?

The internet wasn't built that way. It actually could be easily changed to start charging more for "long distance packets" simply by counting hops, but thankfully that is not the case as of yet.

What frustrates me about "net neutrality" is that people don't realize is that shaping has been happening for years. Certain ports (like port 80, 443, 21 etc.) are given higher priority, what they want to allow now is shaping on a broader scale, so Netflix data streams get automatically put into the "platinum" band because they pay more for it. Unfortunately it's already happened in my country with my current ISP. Netflix is watchable, so is Facebook, and YouTube, all other media sites there is endless buffering and timeouts - especially on a Friday night. I doubt they got a cent from Netflix, Facebook, or YouTube. They are doing it because a vast amount of their customer base only want or use those services, so they are catering for the masses.
