Mobile Number portability (between mobile carriers, not between fixed and mobile) has been available in Belgium for about a year now. I did the switch. My 3 collegues and I each had our own mobile number with different operators. A few months ago, we shopped around for the operator to give us the best business group rate, and we all switched to that one. This allowed us al to keep our old numbers, and yet benefit from the business rates...
The process itself went quite smooth: I filled some paperwork and we agreed on a certain date. A few days before the switch, I got my new SIM-card. The day of the switch, I got a Text message from my old operator telling me they've ported my number, that I should switch off my phone, and plug in my new SIM-card. I plugged in the new one, and was reachable using the same new number, but under a different operator.
- A light laptop
- A gprs cellphone + matching service
- A cable to connect both (or BlueTooth)
- A zabbix/nagios server monitor with a script that sends you a Text Message when something is wrong.
Halon has been banned AFAIK (at least in Europe). Old installations are allowed to exist, but you can't install new ones. Use a CO2 solutions. But beware that if you have children around, this might be very bad!!!
If you like the aix system, and want something made by IBM that's even to a certain degree "compatible" with the system AIX uses, then have a look at evms.
hmm, well,.nl and.be laws are quite different on that part. For instance "ginging away stuff of a certain value" is illegal in.be. Giving a mobile phone for free (or almost free) if one signs a contract with an operator is illegal in.be. It is however legal in.nl,.gb and more than half of Europe...
But IANAL either:)
Not true... I think. I know Sony and Nintendo loose money, but at least the parts + assembly cost them less than the price they sell it for. The article about MS seems to indicate that the parts are costing them more than what they sell the x-box for.
If this is true, and MS confirms this, then Sony, Nintendo,... anyone making game consoles can sue MS over this in Belgium. In our law, it is illegal to sell anything with a loss if you _know_ you are selling with loss the moment you sell it. (There are some exceptions for special sales, but not much!)
So if Sony, Nintendo want to sue... file a complaint in Belgium!
During last weeks general election here in.be, 44% of the people voted on a PC.

Euhm, to the poster: low latency is better than high latency. It is an indication for the time you have to wait before the first bit of data is available. The P4 has a faster memory throughput, but higher latency. This means you'll have to wait longer for the data to become available, but once it's there, you'll get it faster.
... country in the entire region with an incompatible system.
If you ever want to attract any business (besides.US ones), you'll need to have a compatible communicationsystem. Someone doing business in the region will have 2 options: buy 2 phones and 2 contracts, or skip Bagdad....
Is the US finaly catching up then? Here in.BE, we have for fixed phones for a few years now, and for mobile phones since about 8 months, without any problems. As a matter of fact, I've changed my mobile provider a few weeks ago. It went very smooth: after I signed the contract with the new provider, we agreed on a date (which was in the contract), and on said date. A few days before the agreed date, I got my new SIM-card. On the actual date, I got a text message telling me to change the sim-card...
I noticed someone here saying "now we don't know how much we are going to pay". Well, all Belgian mobile operators have the offer you a service (free of charge of cource) that emits "beeps" when you call a number that's on a different provider than yours. Secondly, there's a website where you can check, and a phone service as well...
Before and after the previous Gulf War, we had S/A "jamming" by the military, resulting in "errors" of about 10 to 100m.
During the last GW however, the US military disabled the jamming, because they were unable to produce military grade GPS receivers. They gave "normal" civilian GPS receivers to officers and disabled the jamming, thus defeating the entire purpose of the S/A system...
This was one of the reasons they turned it off a couple of years ago.
Yes well, the post I replied to talked about a special capability the Intell Server MB's have: not only console over serial, but console over LAN as well...
Hi,
Do you have any information on how this works? We have a few Dell PowerEdge servers which are based on an Intel Server MB Design, and I have noticed this setting in the BIOS. However, I have been unable to get any information regarding the specifications...
Maybe one should fork the excellent-but-still-buggy-and-incomplete AxPoint system to be keynote compatible.
For those that don't know axpoint: it's a perl module that generates nice PDF presentations from an xml file...
I currently have a Proximus contract (leading GSM operator in.be), and I'd say 99.5% of my SMS's reach their destination (if you don't count those sent at newyear or valentine's day).
I'd say the other 2 operators (Mobi* and Base) must have about the same numbers.
Furthermore, we have this "confirmation" thing. If we enable it, we get a reply when the message has actually arrived on phone of the correspondent....
i've seen this at least 10 years ago!?

This is not new at all! I've seen (and actually eaten from them) at a Kite festival in Dieppe (France) at least 10 years ago or so. For all the participants, they had these kind of meals. You had to pull a string, and 2 minutes later, the meal was hot!
Hi, There are 2 or 3 smaller "lower end" backup providers, and one big one called . Their product starts at 99 EUR a month (multiply by 1.2 for USD) for 2 GB of compressed storage. The might sound pricy, but they do have an insurance that pays if they can't get your data back. I also read some remarks that "if you have to do a full restore, it's going to take ages over a T1 or 1Mbps dsl line". These guys actually come to your office with a small nas-server, if you need to do a full restore...
