  2. tried installation last night for the first time on Is Ubuntu a Serious Desktop Contender? · · Score: 1

I've been a big linux/bsd user for about 7 years now. I took a year-long break because I got a job developing on windows systems. Last night I installed ubuntu for the first time. I was very impressed. Things I liked:

-Quick install process with the option to install or just run from the liveCD
-All my hardware worked without any configuration
-Firefox came pre-configured with the mime-type associations to open pdf documents, word files, ppt files, etc.
-Simple but powerful interface. Two icons on top: one for web, one for mail. There's 99% of stuff most people do.

The only problem was this: when I tried to change the screen res on my 17" monitor, I could only go up to 1024x768. Using Eclipse at this resolution is difficult. So, I did some googling, and found this cool, thorough HOWTO:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-83973. html

Of course I needed to manually adjust my xorg.conf to have 1280x1024 & 1152xwhatever, but honestly how many newbie's / windows converts are gonna figure that out easily? Now, I've configured XFree & XOrg before, and I'm familiar with the process. However, I think this process should be GUI-fied to make it easier on new users and old users alike. Besides this issue, I think ubuntu is totally a contender for your mother's operating system.

I don't mean to sound all high and mighty, but if you aren't a disciplined coder, then you're not very serious anyway. You can pre-plan the MVC design to your hearts content, but it takes discipline to stay within the boundaries of the original design. Especially since if you don't then you create one of the worst anti-patterns ever, making you wish you'd just written one monolithic chunk of procedural code because bugs/changes would be doable.

WAMP (windows - apache - mysql - php) server is a cool thing I found if you want a quick and integrated solution to developing with mysql/php on windows systems. It puts a little icon in your dock that is similar to the start menu and you can start/stop all servers and enable/disable php modules, etc. It also comes with phpMyAdmin for managing the mysql databases. It's one big executable with installer and theres no admin stuff to deal with before you start programming. Not that any of the admin stuff is particularly difficult, just extremely annoying considering the frequency of changes to php and apache.

Furthermore, I believe it's actually manifested much clearer in a private school considering the fact that if a parents have qualms with the teaching practices the school uses, they can take immediate action by pulling their kid out of that school.

Public school, however, is subject to a much more bureaucratic system that is definitely susceptible to the governments agenda.
