i watched a discovery show once explaining how the moon controls the earths rotation. without the earth, researches suggested that the earth would spin very fast, making life nearly impossible on earth. to add an extra piece of info to the puzzle, they brought up the theory of how the moon was created - by the collision with another planet, and that the moon is actually moving away from us at a few centimeters per year. the further away the moon, the faster the earth will spin. maybe the moon is in the right range for human life forms right now? which could explain why man has only been here a small time in comparison to the earths date line - but, could it also mean our time here is limited? their theory was the earth will spin faster, and, this article has other effects? which one to believe?:)
i am sure a search on www.discovery.com should bring up something on this topic - its why i ordered cable in the first place:)
you hear about the i-love-you, mellisa virus etc etc and the authors being arrested and so forth.. can i call the FBI to chase the FBI once this sucker is on the loose?
Actually there is no significant difference between JDK118 and J2ME. Minor security classes.
you sure about this?:) J2ME is a subset of the standard Java API's that has been specifically designed to suit embedded systems such as PDA's, mobile phones yada yada.. - you can dig up more information at http://java.sun.com/j2me/ - if you have ever messed with J2ME, you'll be familiar with a concept known as MIDlets - yep, try http://www.midlet.org/ or http://www.midletcentral.com/ - and, you'll see exactly what they are. they are nothing but applets really, with a very limited subset of API calls so it is possible to squeeze such applications/applets into embedded systems.
as for the zaurus, i have not played with the unit myself - and, i am not exactly sure if it is capable of executing MIDlets (but, shouldn't take long to set this up). i doubt it is strictly J2ME. sure, a Java virtual machine may have been written - but you'll find it along the lines of KVM or similar, providing a small subset of the Java language (as another poster mentioned - no Swing et al):P Java can get big, but, if you trim it down, the virtual machine and base classes can be as little as 256k - ideal for a PDA environment.

have you ever been to a swedish party? this is pretty much what we do all the time! *g* the scandanavians surely know how to party.. but, unfortunately, wont be any strippers there.. that kinda stuff aint looked upon nicely here (in sweden)..
Going to these hangar Lans with thousands of people just doesn't have that kind of intimacy... it's more geared toward people that just don't have broadband access and wanna get a couple of days of some lag-free gaming in.
um.. most people in Sweden HAVE decent internet connections. and, if you have ever had gaming parties over the sunet.se backbone - you wont complain about lag:) most people run at least 512kbps from their HOME (either cable or ADSL). i dont have many friends who use dial-up..
and, when ADSL (2.5Mbit) is provide for a measly $25 a month (www.bonet.se)? who would be stupid enough to use a modem?
Not in Germany. In the U.S., when you buy software, you actually buy a license to use that software, which allows the software company to impose all kinds of restrictions. In Germany, buying software is no different from buying a loaf of bread (from a legal point of view), so you can do with it anything you like. maybe true, but, you dont go giving your loaf of bread to everyone in the world now? you normally eat it by yourself or your family. they probably shouldn't have released it for public consumption (as i originally said)
i dont see how you can help in this situation. doing binary modifications is not considered "a good thing" by anyone (how would you like it if someone modified your apps - and, put idiotic phrases instead of instructions)? infogrames does want to release a german version by the looks of it, and, something like this "in the wild" will cause conflicts with users at a later date. could you imagine having to go through support with a user who had an translated german version (as opposed to the official german version)??
what infogrames should have done, is work with this guy. they have done the translation(s) - and, they are german.. who else is better to do translations to german? infogrames can win out of this if they play their cards right. and, the last thing we need is what happened with the "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US" episode when translations go wrong.. badly wrong...
i think its great that people are pushing forward on things like this (translating resources), however, under most EULA's - reverse engineering or modification is looked down upon.. its unfortunate for the german civ3 translation - but, maybe they should have kept it to themselves (or, setup a private group for obtaining the translated versions)
guess John posted it before me and mis-read the article:) oh well.. until next time *g* it happens:) maybe CmdrTaco should have verified the info by actually reading the article:)

heh.. yeah, swedish humor is more "abstract":) one that took me a while to understand was:
"swede and a finn are talking in a bar.. finn interrupts swede and says
'are we here to drink, or here to talk'".
after living here for 3 years.. and, after many sweden to finland cruises... it makes sense..:) i guess swedes spend more time surfing to worry about jokes:)
yes, i can verify.. while working at Högskolan i Gävle (around 200kms north of stockholm) i was able to burn a cd while downloading it from ftp.sunet.se:) 100Mb/sec? pfft. thats for babies.. the swedish university network has a nasty network connection, only for the better tho:) *g*.. now, lets not talk about some of the ATM networks available in sweden and finland.. put the usa networks to shame.
first of all - this is no biggie. POSE (GNU GPL'd) exists and does run on many platforms (win32, linux, mac) however, it kinda does go about it all the wrong way. its great to have a ROM image if you want to specifically see a problem with a particular version of the palm os.. not, to just emualte it.
a real emulator would do as Palm Inc, did at the PalmSource 2000 converence last year. they had a palmos emulator running on an ARM palm device. all they needed to do was emulate the m68k assembler and then hook the traps to the native implementations on the device. thats what many of us know as HLE (high level emulation). dont step through, instruction by instruction in the rom images (legal issues with having the rom too) - you should say "hey, the app is calling WinEraseWindow()" and emulate it. they had m68k apps running 2x their normal speed on a 75Mhz ARM chip.. the ipaq could do much better than a wanna be POSE.
only problem is you'd have to trap every known API call, and handing it correctly - heck, its already been done in Java!! pimcity.com.

Yeah, if video games really affect kids can you imagine the result of Pacman. We'd all be hanging out in dark places, eating pills, and listening to electronic music... =P

hmm.. i can see how this would work based on the games from the mid-eighties (pacman, bubble bobble [classic], 1942 etc).. i guess, the basis for this study is on what the "leading professionals" did in the mid-eighties.. unfortunately, i dont see the average "quake" or "unreal" player ending up in such a position. if what they say is real - we're gonna have to watch our backs in ten years!
