...being an early adopter. Wait for the service to get cheap with large amounts of users before signing, if $50/MB is too much
or, move to Sweden:)
GPRS has been active here for quite some time now, and - you can get 1 Mb for 20 Sek ($2 US). i icq on my Palm m505 with GPRS while on the subway daily, and, it doesn't cost me a thing.. now, surfing webpages sucks down some bandwitdh - but, its cheap! my costs for Internet access over GPRS are minimal, compared to the old cost of using tghe GSM phone..
I do have three problems with System Bolaget. There are not enough of them, the opening hours need to be lengthened and they sell Pripps Blå, quite possibly the most offensive liquid known to man.
amen!!
Pripps Blå (klass ett)! haha.. what a bad drink - but, if your living in stockholm.. you'll find that some of the system bolagets are open!! *yay*. Sweden did this for one of two reasons, first, Swedes were drunk too much, and second, they rose prices to stop people buying it.. in effect, they only increased the home-brew (snaps anyone) environments, which, end up killing more each year anyhow.
Over-partied? Certainly this article ended up on the wrong site.
well, in Sweden (i live there) - red bull is not normally used for the "late night hacker".. its normally used as a mixer! a few of my favourite mixes:
- red bull and cider (hard hitting)
- red bull and vodka (classic)
- red bull and jägermeister (sounds bad, but try it)
i know a lot of swedes, and heck.. i drink a bit myself - i was waiting for this to happen to someone.. and, in Sweden!!! we party!
this is really interesting - what else are they planning to ban after they follow this ruling? not that i would ever travel to.af - but, if i did - would it be illegal for me to use my GSM phone to connect to the internet? or heck - i dont think they will ever see GPRS or 3G technologies! Is this a ban on the Internet, or a ban on anything TCP/IP! in the later - think about all those LAN's they have (i am sure they have some) in office and such.. wow.. this is a crazy ruling.
ALso, they don't necessarily shuffle when there is only one deck left; they shuffle at a fairly random point when the pile gets a bit low. If memory serves (and it may be exaggerating on me) she reshuffled when there were about 4 decks left,l and they were playing with about 10 or 15 decks (but as I said, my memory could be playing tricks on me)
it all depends on the casino/place you go to play in. in Sweden, there are two ways:
mode 1:
the deck is reshuffled at the end of the round in which the 'void' card (normally red) is brought out. when the game is over, the decks are shuffled and the person who got the void card cuts the deck, the dealer then places the void card approximately one deck from the end of the cards.
mode 2:
the 'void' card is placed at the end of the deck, once card follows. when the 'void' card is dealt, the last card is shown to everyone and all cards stay where they are while the dealer reshuffles the remainding cards. the first 5 cards are shown, and put to the side.. dealing then continues.
the rules vary from place to place, and sometimes, the dealer does it the way they want to:) but of course, in Vegas.... thats Vegas!!!
Not in a casion. Why? They pay 3 to 2. Yes, supposing that you play for 2 to 1 odds and the dealer plays by normal dealer rules (hold on 17 and over, hit on 16 or less) and you are good, you'll make money. However casinos pay 3 to 2 odds. So if you bet $100 you only get $150 back. That's enough to tip the odds back in their favour.
sorry, have to correct you here - they do pay 3:2 for blackjack (ace + ten) - but, if you bet $100, you actually end up with $250 (+$150) - not as you originally say with +$50. if you win a hand, then you get 1:1 odds, which means if you bet $100 you get $200 (+$100).
Cool, people in Fremont will be able to get high speed Internet through their powerlines during blackouts.
are powerlines copper?:) sure, they are nice thick cables with a heap of twists per metre - would it be feasible for a telco company to hook into unused power lines to provide network connections. as for blackouts - thats what UPS is for, or, use a laptop!
You're right, they don't distribute the code, but how do they get the patterns? Thats right, they examine the real virii.
well, the real virii are what us normal people get too.. you know, the stuff your friends send you via email P remember, Symantec et al encourage users to send them virii information/samples so that they can get it into their database as fast as possible. i think the 'question' here is maybe based on the fact that you have the source code to a virus (which, is something symantec et al dont have on file). just my 2c.
On a more serious note, it looks like this means a company like Symantec cannot operate there as they will not be able to store "virus code" for analysis.
you'll find that companies like symantec do not store the virus code inside their scanners.. instead, they store virus signatures (checksums, data from pattern proccessing). heck, if they stored the virus code, two things.. a) it would be HUGE, and b) the scanner would pick up the scanner to contain 10000's of virii:)
[warning - may be a bit dis-tasteful, but what the heck.]
Yup, it's been done... The movie was called "The Uranus Experiment"..
wow.. the only problem i'd see is that if they wanted to do some 'facials' (do i need to explain)? - wouldn't it be hard.. two reasons.. it wont have the same projectory (no gravity), and secondly, it would hit her face at the same speed it came out (no forces to slow it down).. eww.. surely dont want super man up there - that could hurt. *grin*
i guess the next thing we could see on something like star-trek is the "cum comet"..:) - please dont tell me someone has done it already.
a C[XTE]O capable of doing that? i dont think so. they'll probably send a request to their system operator, who's probably reading slashdot and laughing at them.:)
what happened to us? *grin* -./ configure does make it a bit easier, but, tweaking Makefiles to match your system configuration was definately more fun.
I think you should read-up a bit more... Legend goes back as far as the 7th century (at least) when it was spotted by St. Columba (you know, the guy who brought Christianity to the Scots).
heh:) so.. 1300+ years old? wowser.. this just makes me believe it more, next thing we'll hear is the highlander theme at the loch... "there can be only one!"
what else would explain it? an act of god?:) the press needs something to put on the front page:P the more bizzare, the more "cooler" it seems to the readers.. and, the more "distracted" from reality the more likely it'll have some believers.:P
while i am a fan of mythical stuff - the lochness monstor "thing" i have always conceived as a hoax primarialy to bring tourists into a dead and boring area of the world. the scenery is nice, but that doesn't cut it for most travellers:)
secondly, first sightings (apparent) were 50 years ago.. is this beast still alive? dont read anywhere the expected life-span of a lochness monster.. maybe it died:)
it really depends what you need the device for. you have two major perspectives, first being "use" and the second from a "developer" perspective. as a PDA developer (Palm, VTech, others) it becomes aware of the low level restrictions on what you have from a development perspective.. from a users point of view.. it all depends on what you want it for.
while i dont want to start a PPC vs PalmOS argument here, you may want to think about the following:
PPC:
- shrunken down mobile PC
- games (interactive), work processing, data processing etc
- battery life, size, expandability
Palm:
- PIM, quick reference data
- simple games, KISS principles.
- battery life, size, expandability
loads of other issues too.. but, if you want to play doom type games (CPU intensive) - choose a PPC device.. if you want to mess with work processing, data processing, pretty much do things mobile that you can on your desktop, choose PPC.. if you want a device that you can just bring up information quickly, get a phone number fast, write a simple note.. choose Palm.
its never a question of "which one is best", as it always depends on what you want the device for. consider this question before you make a decision.
Why should I think of the university as being my employer, when I'm the one paying to be there?
depends on what country you live in.. in Sweden, education is free - who's paying what?:) for what its worth, as a lecturer in computing science and someone who has dealth with these type of issues a bit.. there is nothing wrong with GPL'ing the code, however, this is something we normally discuss with the students PRIOR to their commencement on a project. in the event where we dont want the code released, we explicitly say so.
fortunately there are no rules regarding this at my university (no blatent uni owns everything), and everything you do at the universities in sweden is your own, unless you agree otherwise. this include research studies, course preparation etc. it will vary from country to country tho.
your obviously not living in Sweden. want to know where swedish peoples taxes go (and how much they pay?) http://www.swetax.com:) maybe that budget is good for a student:) 25000 Sek ($2500 US) wont get you anywhere.. especially when 70% goes to taxes..
