  1. Anyone else going to go after Linux? on Red Hat License Challenged · · Score: 1

Let's see, we don't have enough press about issues such as SCO suing IBM, Open Something or other suing Apple, SCO is going to revoke a piece of paper from IBM that isn't supposed to be revokable.

Now some self taught someone in the middle of the US has decided to point out something that is apparently not worth pointing out to make a name for himself or something?

Anyone ready to bring SUSE into the limelight of 'something is wrong with the license' type of issue?

Come one, we need to get Linux and the words 'bad licensing' in the press a bit more. Let's really kick it back to four years ago where no one would touch it in the enterprise. I mean it was almost successful at displacing another OS. So we need to make sure we kick it down a few notches.

  2. What I'm Doing on Implementing WiFi in the Real World · · Score: 1

I wanted decent signal through out the house, and a WAP that did 802.11g/b.

And I wanted this back in December I think it was. At the time, Airport Extreme was out. Linksys wasn't.

So I bought a single Airport Extreme.

Because of the range, my upper theater room and the TiVo could not for some reason get a good signal unless you raised it high in the air.

So when I picked up my new Powerbook G4 12" I added a second airport and did the WDS thing.

    Worked like a champ.

Of course, just as I get this all done. I get transfered.

So now I have one in the garage plugged into my structured wiring cabinet / DSL modem hanging from teh wall and another one in the living room. Going to probably move that one upstairs into the theater room.

Works great though. I can surf from the screened in deck. It's great. Of course the little on likes to come and read keys off and beat on the keyboard while I attempt to post messages and such :)

I don't know about most of you, but finding a bluetooth enabled device that actually does anything is difficult if not impossible. Systems from vendors do not have a lot of models with bluetooth, or it is an option.

Apple is the only vendor I know that ships it in most of their models. IBM's Thinkpads have a few models with it.

And the next device I'd want, the phones are kinda rare. Only one or two and then the plans are either not offered/don't support anything that I would need (national coverage with no roaming fees with a large amount of minutes under $50 a month, Sprint is the only one that offers and so far they have NO bluetooth phones). On top of that, I want PDA functions in a phone with bluetooth. That doesn't exist either.

The next piece I'd want is a headset.

I have my mouse. Of course it only works with Windows/Intel somehow (surprise, it's a Microsoft device)

The problem with Bluetooth is people expect it to have wi-fi range. Bluetooth was something that you could use in an office cube, or a meeting room, and that is it. It's not supposed to solve world hunger or network a 5000 sq ft. building.

I believe that the point he was making was not about metered bandwidth, but rather the ridiculous justification that the broadband ISPs are using for metered bandwidth, which is that UNSCRUPULOUS BASTARDS (customers) are engaging in SEEDY ACTIVITY (use of what they paid for) and must be stopped.

But what I meant in my post included the 'demand' charges the electric company does to folks that use more than their 'allotted' need for electricity at any given time.

Really what it boils down to though is the phone companies rolled out broadband expecting 100% of the users to use 1% of the available broadband and route the entire area through a single fractional T1 or something ridiculous like that, and now that people are p2p-ing (illeagly copied music/movies mind you) they suddenly find themselves out of bandwidth.

Do I feel bad for the ISPs whining? Hell no. But do I think because all the problems with the RIAA and the MPAA and their ability to sue the crap out of everyone will help the ISPs and their whining do things to their networks to either

    • A) Charge more for bandwidth
    • B) Block the current P2P ports and make some new rule if we (being the customer) find ways around it we get booted

Either way, as long as P2P is the focus of lawsuits and 'theft of services' they will find a way to shut it down/charge us for it.

And then we'll be back to downloading ISOs and file updates at 14.4k like speeds of yesteryear.

Your local electric providor just keeps charging away per Kw/h of electricity you use, and if you have a higher 'demand' for said electricity you get charged extra for daring to need more electricity than what they deem as a 'nominal' usage during that time period.

So really, ISPs want to be the electric company of our data. The more you use above what they deem 'nominal' you pay a demand fee for and an increased fee over the guy down the street that lives off of one light bulb that is on only one hour a day.
