Haven't you heard? All of Space is the sovereign territory of the US -of- Fuckin' A! Uncle Sam'll be damned if he gonna let any slope get his yellow hands on a piece of that pie.
Surely the US authorities aren't dumb enough to consider a measely 3 miles to be outside its jurisdication.
In Canada you have to be roughly 250 miles off-shore to be in any international area and even those ships (fishing, human trafficing) get boarded when necessary.
Let them write code all they want way out there; Wont be too pleasant on some days.
Theres nothing wrong with eating, but unhealthy diets (of which there are infinite combinations) are more dangerous than eating VERY little, or almost nothing at all. There are of course parameters not being taken into account in my post, but it simple terms, the less you need to eat to survive is likely to extend your life. No matter what you eat, if you eat like a bird (Some birds eat many times their weight, I'm only using this as common metaphor) and do not indulge in other damaging behaviours, you can expect to live longer than your insatiable food-soaked cousin.
Flatworm and fruitfly studies exist which show that extenstions to lifespan are possible by continually fasting the creatures and then feeding them a moderate amount to build them back to 'normal' size.
Eating a great amount of any food will kill you soon enough. Drinking too much water will kill you as well.
"Three square meals a day" is probably the stupidest thing I have ever had to live through. I've fasted on at least 12 occassions, with anywhere from 6-14 days as the duration, and during the fast I have never felt better in all my life. Once food gets introduced, the brain stops working and the body begins to slow down. I've never had a cavity for fucks sake, despite what some would call vitamin depletion. (I'm 33)
I'm not trying to sound righteous, I just think that food intake self-regulation is a massive problem in ALL the developed world. Eat nothing but rice ONCE per day, and you may well live to be 80 or more without any other regiment.
No one wants to change their lifestyle. Its like giving up an addiction, Whether its smoking or goat-porn; The brain thinks up all kinds of reasons for going back to the old ways.
Its easy, its comfortable, its compatible with existing peers. Advertisers learned long ago that its way more costly to change peoples behaviour, but reinforcing existing behaviour is very cost effect.
Boycotts seldom work now because it is so difficult to expect the modern masses to live up to their convictions.
The discussion of the womens' centres certainly was the most enlightening aspect of this interview. Geeks and Shatner just do not mix for some reason; Go figure.
William S Burroughs speculated on this possibility at great length in his writings. It certainly seemed plausible when he discussed it and it's good to see some science help to clarify the idea.
Perhaps science will assist in backing up my supposition that psilocybin mushrooms were responsible for the creation of a human ability to be aware of our own consciousness. Combined with this Word virus it paints a picture of some pretty radical transformations leading to everything we now hold dear.
: Some members of our society would do well to be cured of this ancient virus. (I'm thinking of politicians)
I'm all for showing the worthless pricks that we don't need their online journalism. Chances are that there are 20 other sites with a very similar article.
What the hell else is going on in UHF land? The bandwidth can be more efficiently used with digital transmission anyway.
Weird AL is great, but the demise of actual UHF TV programming (save some areas of the States perhaps) is well behind us.
Hopefully the range will prove to be affordable to license and resell thus leading to an opening in (mostly) unused frequencies, which I'm sure most of slashdot is interested in.
The nastiest thing an art critic *should* be able to say about computer art is that it is not a real 'painting'. (no shit eh?)
Here is my definition:
'A work of Art is the end product of *any* attempt to express a creative idea.'
(In fact, I consider the actions involved in creating art to be an artform in itself, but that will never fly here.)
Notice there is still room for disagreement in my assessment (ie. Is that a creative idea?)
I do not dwell on what format the end product must exist in for it to be art. An enlightened critic should take the same approach.
Art critics are typical bastards, and you will often find that many of them do not create anything, so I consider them to wield the least authority on the topic.
I would package all music/theatre/literature/canvas/computer critics onto a ship and send them to the centre of the star Sol...
I think too many networking vendors get hungup on previously 'illegal' numbering schemes. IP addressing isn't only for the computers, it should also be designed to be human readable. There should be no reason for IP stacks of various flavours to not understand all zero quads with valid netmasks.
RFC1918 is still valid and should be used where ever possible, and pressure should be put onto those vendors who refuse to accept oddball netmasks just because it wasn't done that way 10 years ago. With modern VPNs, NAT, Squids and the like, many networks have need for only a handful of true addresses. Its not only better for conservation of address space, but also much more secure overall.
Don't let anyone tell you you can't use 10.0.0.0 with a mask of 255.255.0.0 (or a wide variety of other possibilities)
I enjoy the 172.16.0.0-172.31.0.0 range with a 255.255.252.0 mask. This allows 1024 hosts per network. (Ex. 172.16.0.1 - 172.16.3.254) If your vendors cannot get this flexible, then tell them to fuck off...
How dumb of the RIAA not to have asked for that in the first place?
Even with the current filters applied, there is too many holes, and lots of leakage. They should have configured it like a firewall in the first place. Block all, then allow only these tunes.
The fewer songs you have in napster that meet the filter the better your collection. I personally have none which will ever be filtered.(Cause I wrote the shit myself)
Anyone pissed off with filters or no filters should shutup and a song about it instead...
That was afterall what napster originally claimed was the business model (even if that it is a lie)
Commcerial Music is heavily over-rated and should be allowed to die. Lets start a trend of encouraging people to support ONLY non-RIAA music.
Fuck 'em, man!
Just make the bombs go off due to the jamming signal instead.
The creative commons site Freesound also tags sound to map locations, but it does so with Google Maps, not Earth. Here is a link from near my home:

Dewey Decimal Dude!
A database will never help you find a book if they're arranged in random order.
Thats Bullshit.

Some distros do already. I hope the expectations are better than a factor of fifty, cause all largish systems are patching out of control.

Since when is Everything2.com the last bastion of truth in the Universe. It is only slightly less apocryphal that the Hitch Hikers Guide...
Only a non-musician would consider melody to be the only force at work within music.
