If you are young enough to handle it, how about getting into the HVAC trade? Try and get in as an apprentice with a company like Honeywell, Johnson Controls, or McQuay. All of the big industrial equipment (chillers, boilers, air handlers, etc.) is very advanced. Gone are the days that any old mechanic can change a relay and be done with it - at least when dealing with chillers.

I was in a similar boat just over 2 years ago. Fed up with sitting at a desk all day. Got hired as an apprentice and I've been enjoying it ever since. Probably learned more in the first week than I had done in 5 years previous. I don't work for an outfit that is heavily into controls though. But there are many out there.

Check out HRAI and ASHRAE for lots more information.

How about a Honeywell Chronotherm? It is a 2-stage programmable thermostat. Use the first stage (Y1) to operate your swamp cooler and the second stage (Y2) to operate your compressor. Not sure how easy it is to change the differential between first and second stage, though.

Same goes with plumbing, carpentry, natural gas, electrical, and so on... Hell, even the cheap ass window shaker air conditioners you buy at crappy tire are rated in BTU's.

I don't want to work in a factory, but I'm sure there are many unemployed people who would. Besides, it's really no worse than working at McDonalds, Walmart, et al for minimum wage. The more things are made in China by slave labour, these are the only jobs that lower class citizens will be able to get. The very same people who used to work menial jobs in factories. I'd rather poor people work in factories than sit on welfare or pogey. I can't believe what I'm reading - people have no problem with slave labour in China, as long as their materialistic lifestyles can be maintained as cheaply as possible.

I would have to agree. Hardly an important feature for the average user. However, it is important to me. I'm a big fan of cover art of albums. I realize that cover art has died since the phase out of LP's, but I still enjoy it. Haven't you ever sat listening to your LP's while holding the sleeve in your hands admiring the album cover?
