  1. Re:I don't buy music on Music Downloading not Entirely to Blame · · Score: 1

I'll buy a CD when something good ocmes out. I'm sick of the labels blaming the internet for their crappy products not doing well.

    Here's a few suggestions.

Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Genesis
Overnite Sensation - Zappa & The Mothers
Are We Not Men? We Are Devo! - Devo
More Than Meets The Ear - Jean-Luc Ponty

That should keep you going for month or so.

  2. Re:Not in Korea on Music Downloading not Entirely to Blame · · Score: 1

But trying to find Devo, The Beloved, or even The Beatles and the Doors is a futile effort.

Not a problem for me. I find stuff like this all the time in used record shops. Of course, I still purchase vinyl. I'm not going to say the quality is better. Of course it isn't. But it sounds good to me, and I can get 10 albums for the price of some of the same albums on cd. Case in point - Bought Focus 3, Starless and Bible Black and Red for 10 dollars. Try finding any one of those on cd for less than 20 bucks a piece.

Um, nuclear power creates electricity. I don't know of any houses in my neighborhood that aren't wired for electricity. Electric furnaces and water heaters are readily available. Hell, the computer you are using to post on Slashdot runs on electricity. Converting to nuclear means nothing to the homeowner. We still get electricity from the power grid.

I agree completely. And what's more, CBC radio has no commercials. One thing I can't stand are commercials on radio. Especially while stuck in traffic. The other local talk/news stations (1010 and 680) have more commercials than content.

    Canadian politics in a nutshell:

NDP - Increase spending. More taxes. More health-care spending. More immigration. Blah, blah, blah.

Conservatives - Less spending. Less taxes. Two-tiered health-care. Immigrants are stealing Canadian jobs. Blah, blah, blah.

Liberals - Conservatives are racist. NDP are radical. No two-tiered health-care. Unless we have a slim minority, then maybe. Vote for us, we promise we won't hurt you. Everything the other parties said that you don't like - we promise we won't do that...

Not sure about your location, but here in Toronto I get called by Pollara once in a while. It actually shows up as Pollara on call display. Even telemarketers (mainly the Toronto Star for some reason) show up as Call Centre or something like that. The only numbers here that I don't get a name on are either cell numbers or a caller that has deliberately blocked it. Even those show up as Private Caller on call display.

  13. Re:Wrong about Smashing Pumpkins on U2 Threatens to Release Album Early on iTunes · · Score: 1

Please give credit where it is due. Zappa did this years ago. He had a 4-LP album and wanted to release it. The label wanted 4 separate albums. Zappa took the album to a local radio station, got on the air and told all his fans to start their tape recorders, and played the whole thing.

Soon, it was released as a 4-LP bootleg. Wasn't until years later that the official Lather release happened. I don't think the circumstances with the record label were exactly the same as the Pumpkins', however. At that point, the Pumpkins were pretty much finished, and Zappa was arguably at his best.

If you have good light control, which *most* folks either have or can arrange, a front projector is an extremely good way to go. You get a gigantic screen and great picture quality. And no, they don't have speakers, but most folks I know have a stereo in the front room anyway, and just hook up through that.

Most front projectors that I have dealt with (granted, only about 10 or so over the last 4 years) have been very noisy. OK in a large room, but if I was any less than 20 feet away from the thing, the noise would make it nearly impossible for me to enjoy a movie. Sure, the image is bright and clear, but that bulb gets hot. The only way to cool it is with a fan.

I might be wrong, however. Perhaps they are using quieter fans now?

  16. I'd use refrigeration... on Cooling a Digital Camera? · · Score: 1

More specifically, I'd consider installing a ductless split air conditioning system. Mitsubishi makes many different types of them. As the name would imply, they don't need ducts and can simply hang on the wall or from the ceiling.

If the ceiling is too high, you could install a duct in front of it to force the air downwards. Only downfall is that this is an actual air conditioning system, which means you will need to have the condenser fan installed outside, as well as the reefer lines to said condenser.

They aren't cheap, but are also not that expensive. You could probably get one installed for under $2000. Depending how far away the condenser would be, mind you.

Trouble with Catcher in the Rye is that you should really read it before you are out of your teens. Preferrably the mid-teens. I read this again recently (my first time having been when I was 15) and it didn't have the same impact. Mostly because I have experienced much more of life and the world in general. Reading about Holden when you are an adult makes you think of him as not much more than an annoying kid. The kind I see every day, the kind who think they are so smart. Hell, the kind of kid I used to be.

Or not. You could very well be like me, decide no one party comes close to representing your views, conclude that Canadian 'democracy' sucks and is broken, and consequently you won't bother voting but will just go back to playing video games instead.

It is this exact reason that the Fiberal party of Canada has been in power for so long, and it part of the reason that the NDP ran Ontario into the groud about 10 years ago. The hardcore party supporters will always vote, and the rest of the people get so disenchanted with politics that they stay home. Plus, the Liberals have done a masterful job of painting the rest of the parties as nothing more than a bunch of unfriendly radicals. They make the Conservaties look like a bunch of Republican fundamentalists, and the NDP look like a bunch of commies. Vote for us, because we are the only non-racist, non-radical, and quite friendly party.

That link to the Liberal response is a great example of the kind of answers they always give. When is the last time the Liberal party has been straight with an answer? They just wait until every other party has answered, and try to stay right in the middle.

I wish Canadians could organize by riding and all choose to vote for the best person who can beat the liberal party. Or bring in Monty Brewster and hold a big "Who You Gonna Vote For?" Campaign.

All that being said, I do vote for the Green Party, but I also know that if they won the election, we would be completely screwed.
