  1. The Running Man? on How to Jam a Worldwide Satellite TV Broadcast · · Score: 2, Interesting

Didn't Mick Fleetwook and Dweezil Zappa do this in The Running Man? Remember the scene towards the end where Ben Richards discovers the dead bodies of the so-called winners of the Running Man game? It is at that time he is captured by the resistance (for lack of a better term). He then helps them capture the satellite. If I recall all they had was a bunch of machine guns and one clever geek who made that girl remember the uplink code.

Famous Players bought a chunk of IMAX years ago. They had a big expansion of Famous Players cinemas and a big selling point was IMAX theatres. While I had seen many IMAX movies, I had yet to see an IMAX 3d movie. I decided to see an IMAX 3d movie, to see what all the fuss was about.

As impressive as the LCD glasses are, the main problem is that I had to try on 3 different pairs to find a pair that wasn't covered in greasy fingerprints. And the glasses were kept in a locked room between shows. Imagine how damaged those things would get if attached to the seats? I guarantee that kids would break them on purpose.

I believe you accidently stumbled across the real reason for the switch: People will see movies numerous times to see if the quality is better in the digital version or the film version. If everybody who currently sees movies sees everything twice, well... I'm no math whiz, but that seems like a lot of money to me.

Eventually he admitted that the main reason he played was because he was good at it, not necessarily because he loved to play.

Anyone who is at the top of their "game" in any discipline will tell you that without practice (that is, activities that keep your skills honed and fresh), your ability to excel will diminish. No question about it.

When Pittsburgh won 2 Stanley Cups, Lemieux would show up about 20 minutes before gametime, and skip the pregame skate. He could still manage to score 2-3 goals a night, against teams and goalies that practiced daily.

I know there is no scientific basis behind it, but I still believe that certain people are just better at certain things. While practice can't hurt, you still need some kind of talent to start with. Perhaps Chaos theory can explain it?

If your're feeling really adventurous, try and use Con Kolivas' low-latency patches. I haven't tried them yet, but lots of people on the Gentoo Forums talk about how responsive they make your system.

Only problem I see is that Con admits that his patches are focused more on responsiveness and less on stability.

Sure, an older person can pick up the ability and wield a certain prowess and even artistry. But no one, to my knowledge, would argue the fact that a person who learns to play the piano in childhood has a certain "feel" for it that people who pick up this ability later in life can never attain. It's not that the older person can't play sonoriously with rhythm and emotion. But the younger player has a certain reach that will never be known to the older guy.

I totally disagree. I don't think you can "learn" the art of playing a piano. And I'm not talking about playing a few simple songs, I'm taking about playing symphonies. Playing real piano music. You need to have the talent, and talent is something you can't be taught. Sure, you need the lessons to refine your talent, but you still need to have the gift of music. It is the same with sports: You can practise hockey all your life, but if you don't have that athletic talent that is needed, you will never make it to the NHL. The same can be said about drawing, painting, music.

Some people are just better at certain things than other people. For some reason the sports analogies come easily: Players like Mario Lemieux don't need to practise, and they will still be better than anybody. Somebody like myself, who is a fairly competent hockey player, could practise 4 hours every day for 10 years and still not even come close to being as good as Lemieux. He has the gift, and his brain can do that particular discipline better than anyone. I think the same is true for arts, music and sports.

I don't believe coding falls into that category, either.

It is rare these days that I get nostalgic about video games, but Intellivision always seems to do it for me. When I first got one, I had it connected to an old b/w tv. I could usually get it connected to the living room colour tv once in a while, but it only lasted until somebody wanted to watch TV.

Astrosmash was one of my favourites, which is strange because the background would change colour depending on the level you were at. I believe the same was true of Night Stalker (a game I really sucked at, for some reason). Luckily I had no younger siblings, as my friend who had an Intellivision 2 did. His younger brother and sister ruined all of his overlays, making it much more difficult to play games like football. Of course we played so much we had the buttons memorized anyway...

It was a sad day indeed when my mother sold it, along with my Ti99-4A, at a garage sale for 40 bucks.
