  1. Re:Dark Fiber in the front yard. on Dark Fiber: A Case In Point · · Score: 1

    Well, yeah, duh.

Just because they were running fiber doesn't mean that I didn't already have four lines of copper running into my house.

I didn't say that I expected Bellsouth to give me DSL over fiber. My mention of no Bellsouth DSL was simply to point out Bellsouth's lack of options for me. I waited it out, and after four years in the house, my cable company has finally rolled out Cable internet access (yay to the cable, boo to the fact that it's RR from Time Warner.)

  2. Dark Fiber in the front yard. on Dark Fiber: A Case In Point · · Score: 5, Interesting

Shortly after I moved into my house, almost five years ago, Bellsouth paid me $400 so that they could lay fiber along the roadside in my front yard.

I live in HIGHLY rural area, consisting mostly of lakehouses used as weekend getaway accomodations.

At the time, I thought that the installation of fiber in my front yard might eventually lead to allowing me to get a really high-speed broadband connection. To this day, however, if I were to call Bellsouth, the best they could offer is an ISDN connection, as DSL is unavailable.

But, I guess that it leaves Bellsouth's options open for the future.

  3. Re:Amazing coincidence on Linus Torvalds On Linux 2.6 · · Score: 5, Funny

    Yeah. I've noticed that.

I think he was trying to get on the hype-bandwagon surrounding "Linux" so he changed his name. Kinda like that RMS guy. He quit using his full name so that he would be known by a three-letter acronym just like "GNU."

And then RMS wanted to Torvalds to go by the name "RMS/Linus" to denote the fact that Stallman had been working in computer science for longer then Torvalds.

Maybe everyone would just be better off calling it "ATT/OS" to give credit back to where it really belongs. ...I did get the story right, right?

The thing is that most people really couldnt care less about the sound quality of their music. They're happy to listen to tape recordings of radio broadcasts of music on shitty boom-boxes. They simply don't know the difference.

You are correct, sir. Personally, after my nine years working in the Navy, around heavy equipment, or operating a variety of pnuematic tools used to remove paint on ship to get back down to bare metal, my appreciation of audio is not quite what it used to be.

I honestly can't tell the difference between a 32kbps sample and a 128kbps. Pathetic, I know, but that is my lot in life. As long as I can hear SOMETHING, I'm happy.

I think that there are probably quite a few people out there in my situation. Our hearing makes the competition for audio clarity irrelevant to us.

  5. Re:Who wants to watch it anyway ? on The Two Towers Hits the Net · · Score: 1

    I disagree Taurine.

The problem with the first film (and it's a problem that will follow each of the films) is that no film will ever be able to do the original work justice. Like many LOTR fans, there are many points in the movie that I found disappointing and even more points from the book that I was disappointed not to see in the film. Despite these failings, I really feel that the film was extremely well done, and done by people who really did want to present the story as faithfully as possible. You just need a lot more then three three hour films to present the story in its full magnificents.

Have you ever taken a look at the unabridged audio book version of The Lord of the Rings? It's something like 30 to 40 hours worth of material. Something of this scope needs a television mini-series lasting at least a month to present the full story faithfully. But television mini-series lack the kind of budget that would give us the visual spectacle that Peter Jackson produced in his abridged version of the story.

It made for a good movie. An excellent movie. But that movie is still nowhere near the beauty that Tolkien captured in his original, inspired, story.

  7. What about SuperBeta? on Why VHS Was Better · · Score: 3, Interesting

Years ago (1991-1993) I was working for the Navy Broadcasting Service in Keflavik Iceland. Every week we would receive a shipment of three large containers. Each container was packed with video tapes containing content for us to play the following month on our base-wide television station. The tapes came in "SuperBeta" format from Sony. Basically, the tapes were some version of "BetaMax" but on tapes that were almost twice the width of the standard beta tape. Each tape could hold about 90 minutes of programming.

The format was great. It produced very nice resolution (which is needed for any kind of broadcasting, due to signal loss.) There are still television stations out there (particularly entertainment for military audiences) that still use the SuperBeta format. I'm wondering if Sony is going to force these stations to upgrade their facilities or if they will keep producing SuperBeta after the demise of Betamax.

The unit you are refering to has been out for quite a while. The unit being reviewed here is actually quite new, and rather more advanced then what you are refering to.

This particular device allows you to control playback with your tape deck audio controls, and if placed in a tape recorder, actually allows you to record directly to MP3. This could be a very nice function for college students recording lectures as they can transfer the lectures back to PC for archival purposes.

This is actually a NEW (as in news) way to present the whole cassette-shaped MP3 player metaphor.

I was serious. The "uneventful" periods of the Journey in the LotR was where a lot of the character development took place. It was during a pit stop in the Two Towers where Gollum caught the rabbits for Sam to cook for Frodo that I realized that Sam was the more heroic of the two hobbits.

I honestly wish that LotR had been filmed as six movies instead of three.
