Please stop spreading FUD. This is NOT old news. It's new. Apple updated their scores, and now there are production low end machines that have been tested.
And, we've all seen the "I'm jealous so I'm going to debunk this" website. Next.
You can chose to use a Mac or not. At worst case scenario the Mac is maybe 5 to 10% slower, which is not perceivable to a human unless you're running a multiple day long task. At best, the Mac is 200% faster. That's noticable in the timeframe of a second.
At the most, MacPlay and Aspyr lag 2 years. To be honest, if it's that long they rarely ship with all the problems the PC version did. Obviously I'd like simultaneous release, which Blizzard has always done, but you can't have everything.
The Mac is easier to use. Now it's also as fast (or significantly FASTER) the the PC. It runs all the commercial apps you need. It can emulate proprietary in-house apps with VirtualPC. It can play all the latest games, even if they laga couple months (get a PS2, also!). It's UNIX under the hood and runs X11 for added compatability. All of this, and it's not any more expensive than comparable PC hardware.
It's time to take an objective look at these systems if you're in the market for a new machine. Just take a look. If you don't like it, then don't buy it... but the Mac is a VERY viable platform these days. More so now than ever.
I'm no Linux fan (I use OS X), but this number could be a bit misleading. Just because a web site is cracked does not mean the computer is less secure. It also is not comparing apples to apples, because cracking a web site could be as easy as finding the dumb-ass password... some people actually set it to things like "password" or "12345", etc. That's not insecurity based on the OS, that's user error.
They are comparing cracked sites with the theory that the system it's self is insecure and vulnerable... to WHAT exactly? Viruses? Well, again, given a proper password and basic security precautions, Linux rarely (if ever) will use the built in software to take over not only YOUR system, but OTHER PEOPLE'S systems. In the Wintel world, this is the norm. Why on Earth do people use Windows? Aside from it running some proprietary app you have in house I can't see a single reason...
Microsoft has once again proved that even though they're now capable of slapping some paint on an old house, they still can't fix the foundation.
I honestly can't believe how complex they've managed to make even simple tasks. These screenshots, aestetically, look great... but they still bury functionality in the wrong places, and put simple tasks under 3 different sub-menus.
How does this help anything? It doesn't. But what does it prove? They're scared of Apple's OS X. They copy basic concepts of functonality and pleasing look, while missing all the fundamental reasons why Apple's OS works like it should. SIMPLICITY. I'm not saying OS X is perfect, but Panther looks like a great stride and will be available in a month or two. Longhorn... which should be called "Shoe-horn" won't be out until mid 2005.
.... and the world goes back to what they were doing. I'm glad they spent two years to change some capitalization and add 3 letters on to the end of the name.
In the infamous words of Adam Sandler: "Who were the marketing wizards that came up with that one?"
Um, calling ATI an underdog is a gross misrepresentation. Not only do they have the best performing chips, but their marketshare is actually dominant in many areas.
http://www.beyond3d.com/#news7249
DX9 Marketshare: ATI 40% nVidia 60%
Integrated Marketshare: ATI 21% nVidia 27%
Laptop Marketshare: ATI 68% nVidia 32%
In most cases, nVidia's share in the last quarter fell, while ATI's was on the rise. Plus, ATI will be in all XBox sales and Playstation sales.
--sarcasm-- I vote for not letting anyone on the web that doesn't have a P4 Win XP box with IE 6 or greater, in English, with perfect vision, no physical hindrances, and impeccable hygenie. -- end sarcasm --
What a pain in the ass this is going to be to implement. This must be what engineers complained about when the Persons with Disabilities act passed. I'm all for it, but the logistics can make it unbelievably resource intensive. Is it bad to not want to help unless it directly effects you?:-) Yes? Damn!:-)
I'm sorry, but governments should not adopt OSS. I understand is private sector companies are for it, bu the reality is that OSS doesn't save a whole lot of money. Support for OSS is just as high as high, but you have fewer vendors to choose from. It does save us from using the evil empire, but I personally feel governments would be BEST off with a scenario like this:
1) They pay for commercial software with entitles them to: 2) Choose the vendor of their productivity applications and other required applications, so long as they interoperate. 3) See the financial and productive results of #2. 4) Choose their platforms without requiring a homogeneous OS strategy. Mac OS X, Wintel, or Linux(?) 5) Understand more fully the implications of their choice, rather than paying for the cheapest or bowing to pressure.
I may live in an ideal world, but that doesn't prevent me from wishing.
If there's a record in a database about a famous dead person and I stumble upon it, aren't I more likely to click on it than if it was just a no-name person? Is that not the very definition of entrapment? Even if I wasn't looking at the record for nefarious reasons, I'd be in violation, for being curious. Granted, what's wrong is wrong is wrong... but for god's sake we're human beings!
Apparently you. Maybe even a couple other people... but to say that even a quarter of the professional market is not willing to pay for the high end $3k machine is crazy. The fact is, neither of us have numbers to talk about, but I can safely say your $1,800 for a graphics machine statement is at best influenced heavily by your opinion and not by fact.
A lot of people pay for the top of the line stuff because if you think for a second that a $3k deduction and the productivity you gain by buying the top of the line is not worth it, well, you're not considering all the factors.
Everyone runs their own business with the same "I'm right" attitude, but buying a new $3k machine every 2 years makes more sense for my business than a $1,800 machine. Now, if I was to fill out a workshop full of 20 machines for production-grade work... I think the low or mid grade G5 would be more than capable at (drum roll) $1,999. That's just me, but I can afford to pay someone cheaply to work an extra 20 seconds on something if I deal with volume.
... that the P4 has pretty much stalled around 3 GHz fr a while now. They were really ramping up the MHz about a year ago. Sheesh, are the suffering from motorolia? As a Mac user, I feel your pain.
"Quite an impressive accomplishment... it took them 25 years to reach the billions, but they estimate that they will hit 2 billion by only 2007."
Hahahaha. Okay, so which "law" is this? Moore's law ensures speeds double every 18 months, so which law is responsible for so many crappy CPU's filling our server rooms and living rooms?
Ugh. They're like McDonalds. 1 billon served. 750,000,000 Pissed off.
I make my decision on what video card to purchase based on only a couple of factors. The least inportant to me, accross same-generation cards by nVidia and ATi, is frame rate. It's ben said a thousand times that you can't see the diff. past about 60 fps if your card can maintain at least 60 fps at all times. If my card can handle all the features I want in future games, like FSAA and per-pixel shading, then it meets my criteria for feature set.
In order of preference (because so many things are similar these days):
1) I favor ATi over nVidia because I believe ATi is a better company. 2) Application support, which translates to the quality of the drivers. I use the same computer to do high end 3D animation and 2D photo editing as I do to play UT2003. 3) I favor the card that can handle all the features I want for the next 1.0 to 1.5 years, at which point I'm buying a new card. 4) Price, because most are so similar in price that even $50 more is not significant to me. 4) frame rate. unless the card is 20% slower at 1280 x 1024, this is insignificant to me. 5) Benchmarks? Bah. Meaningless.
Granted, Bands may get little money for their effort, but they usually put out Albums to support TOURS. The tours make them the most money-- if they're good.
Quite honestly, I don't feel bad for musicians. I am an artist, and there are commercial and non-commercial ways to sell your talents. Some are more profitable than others, and as such, are more difficult to achieve greatness in. After all, the arts are a luxury only afforable to a society willing to indulge it's self. If someone is willing to pay me for a service like this, then I have to be willing to take what society is willing to pay. Granted, you could say the record labels are ripping people off, but I don't entirely buy that. Many people starve trying to make a living at music or art, regardless.
To summarize, get a "real job" (one you hate?) if you aren't making enough money. Maybe you're not good enough and you're saturating the market with crap music? That may not be a popular opinion, but it's an informed one from someone who sells artistic talents as a career.
Do you really think Apple should be responsible for your computer's problems? If your computer "craps out", then you lose your data on there. Can you re-purchase your lost term paper, love letters, e-mail, or home photos?
Yes, you can! If you backed them up like you're supposed to. I'm not going to be holier than thou and say I always back up everything, but it's my own fault if I lose the data. No one else.
Apple lets users burn the tracks directly to CD. At that point, there is NO DRM on the CD. You have a format-agnostic backup for the life of the CD.
Amongst who? Slashdot readers? It's certainly not consumers. Everyone uses mp3 (mpeg 2 layer 3). Apple's AAC (mpeg 4) does sound amazing. I've bought several songs already in that format.
OGG may sound good, but I wouldn't know. It's going to be relegated to the nerd community (which I am a proud member), but I just don't see it breaking through.
... except my DSL, which I pay $50/month for, gets 1.5Mb download and 38.4KB... yes, I get 155KB a second download speeds and it's obvious my provider, Earthlink, caps this-- it will get to 155KB very fast and then cap off and go no faster.
I also rarely deal with congestion, since my DSL is much less vulnerable to this problem. In other words, while I've seen a cable modem burst to 300KB, they rarely do better than 1/10th of that during peak usage.
Obviously, everyone here will have different results. For me, it seems my DSL is "above average."
The Mac version is about as simple as it gets. Check out the PDF for screenshots if you're not lucky enough to have a Mac with OS X 10.2 to run the software.
Does anyone think they will bother with a linux version, seeing as this is a consumer box? Consumers don't buy Linux. Don't get we wrong, it'd be great and I'm not against it if they do... but I seriosuly doubt that's in the cards. However, a third party could probably do it.
Assuming I have to pay $770 for this...

Given that the PowerPC architecture is based around efficiency instead of brute force, these graphs do not really surprise me.
They just don't take into account the 20 minutes of fu**ing with their PC on each bar.
Apple does let you use JavaScript OSA syntax. You can install it and start writing in a syntax you're more compfortable in.
