Which part of INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED do you not understand? People should be used to minimum specifications by now. Those that aren't probably won't be able to get more than 10FPS on a good day while playing (for example) Half-Life2 anyway. Next you'll probably rant that Spanish speaking people shopping in the USA are being abused by Valve because of this.

I eagerly anticipated HL2. I was not aware that it required an internet connection to use until I did what any reasonable person does when dishing out that much money for a software product, I spent time reading the box to make sure that I could meet the specifications listed.

It is interesting that the NYT is now dispensing advice on how to fix flood control problems in New Orleans when they have a long record [foxnews.com] of recommending against improvements. They will argue all sides of an issue if it suits their political agenda, but they have no credibility.

    From the link:

"Sean Penn To the Rescue" "And finally, upon hearing the plight of New Orleans residents, actor and political activist Sean Penn (search) sprang into action, flying to the beleaguered city to help in the rescue effort. But it was Penn who wound up needing to be rescued after the boat he was piled in sprang a leak just seconds after launching. Penn and his entourage, including a personal photographer, were seen frantically bailing the water out of the shrinking vessel with a plastic cup."

Fox News is great. Sean Penn first acts like Superman and then gets stuck in a "Shrinking Vessel". Or, maybe Sean Penn was actually increasing in size and the Fox reporter got it all wrong?

It would be those who Lowtax encouraged that would be donating or other regulars of that site & forums.

Lowtax has had a HUGE following for the last ~7 years and couldn't cut and run without people recognizing him on the street and beating the crap out of him over and over again.

Those who don't aren't familiar with him would be stupid to donate there, I'll give you that. But, for the hundreds of thousands of people who regularly visit his site, giving AT HIS SITE is not only understandable but also shows how legitimate his community is.

Actually, although the ads show that sort of thing because it feeds into fear of inadequacy (sales!), the magazines targeted at them usually show small breasted women.

It's one thing to sell a product by showing that it will enhance a woman. It's quite another to get her to willingly purchase monthly a magazine that constantly shows that she's less than other women.

For example, look at the popular womens magazines in a grocery checkout sometime. You'll rarely see a large breasted female on the cover because it's purchase turn-off.

Try doing that with adults and for bonus points add a 'this hurts us more than it does you' message for them and see how they react to being treated like children.

It's like trying to stop people from developing an addiction to a drug by only allowing them to use the drug for 2 hours at a time. And yes, it's a fair comparison. I've seen many an Everquest player do things that usually only seriously drug addicted people do. (grossly distorting the amount of time playing the game, loss of jobs because of lack of sleep or refusal to stop playing, paranoia that people are trying to interfere with their 'precious', losing their children in custody battles because of the game, theft to make up for money spent on computer equipment/monthly fees, etc...)

Time limits won't do what they are intended to do. In fact, it will often have the opposite effect because the person is left wanting at the end of each session instead of naturally getting bored or making the conscious decision that it's time to do something productive like mowing the lawn.

The forbidden fruit of playing longer than X hours will tempt a lot of people especially children to work around it...even if they wouldn't have wanted to play that long anyway. It's rebellion against authority. They'll rent multiple accounts if all else fails.

It's up to family & friends to intervene when someone has this large of a problem. Time limits won't do anything at all except make people Feel Good[TM] about what they've (allegedly) done to stop gaming addiction.
