Let me start by saying I am a Windows fanatic. Probably by this first sentence I will get modded to a negative one. Read on.

I read Slashdot every day. Generally the theme, besides news for nerds, is all about Linux. This is fine with me. There are plenty of topics for me to choose from. Linux does interest me though.

In my time of reading /. I have noticed two important themes. Down with Microsoft. Up with Linux. Again this is fine with me. Everyone has the right to choose the OS that suits their needs. However, with the sudden rise of United Linux I have noticed one problem. Bias.

You can't have your cake and eat it too.

If you want Linux to be mainstream and hit consumer desktops, you have to start somewhere. UL is that somewhere. Since the birth of Linux, the OS has boomed to be somthing of comparison. In the buisness world it offers a low-cost solution to workstations and servers. It can get the job done and without hassle. One problem. There is no standard. None. You look at Windows and it is standardized. From top to bottom it is standardized. It is also on 90 percent of all computers or somthing like that.

    Standardization plays a huge roll.

UL is what Linux needs. To create a standard. To charge a little money to keep revenues up so development will always move forward. With a business standard a consumer standard will follow. It is guarenteed. The Linux community needs to stand behind UL and be with them. To support them and give feedback. If you want Linux Mainstream you have to pitch in.

So what if it isn't entirely free. Free doesn't mean profit, it means loss. Money going into developement isn't being returned on sales.

I just think that all GPL/OSS/Linus Worshipers need to rally up and say "HEY! UL is it, watch out!"

I am not referring to invasion of privacy but I look at software and material items as the same thing. Say you go out and steal a Big Ghetto Blaster Stereo from Walmart. This is known as theft or in many cases shop lifting. Now look at it from this perspective and not the free software, open source perspective. Did you build the stereo sold at Walmart. More than likely not. As there are no schematics for you to view as well as free parts to use to follow said schematic to build the stereo in the exact way as the manufacturer did. Let alone change it all for free. Granted it is material, but still it is an object sold for consumer use.

Now take that model and put it in the software world. You have a program. No source code is available and the company only allows you to obtain the software in question by purchasing it through, cash/credit/debit whatever. Some way you have to pay for it to get your hands on it. Or... you could pirate the software and obtain it for free and use it with out paying for it. This, applied to the same model as above is stealing. You stole from the company because you did not pay for the software written by them, the work put forth by them, (just like the stereo) and you use it anyways. This is stealing. It may not have a physical manifestation but I bet most companies offer it on CD which would make it, theoretically, physical property. Which you do not own. You took and use without paying for. I don't care what your movement is, it is still stealing.

You could be part of a movement that believes all physical objects should be for free, does it make it right to go out and just take items because it is your movement. No. No matter how you look at it. It is stealing whether software or material. You can deny it up and down but it is still stealing whenyou get to the bottom of it.

What is even more upsetting is the lack oif knowledge on the XP activation feature. Microsoft doesnot force you to register with them but they do ask you, not force you, to activate Windows XP.

Granted if you do not activate XP it will fail to work in 30 days but still there is no registration process. Activation is just a new way to type in your CD Code. Except it takes a digital picture of your motherboard and completely relates it to your copy of XP. So that copy is only for that said motherboard and can only be changed under certain circumstances.

When I bought XP I was running an Asus somthing or other that had an older ALI chipset that was completely incompatible with my nVidia GeForce 2 MX 400. (Except under Win98 but even then the stablility was horrible due to the fact of the conflicting card and chipset, XP and W2K were even worse. At least it wasn't an OS problem)

End result was I had to go out and buy an Asus A7V266. Everything is swanky but inorder to run XP I had to call up MS and say look this was the problem, now give me a solution. They did with out hassle and without me having to buy a new copy of XP. They just had me re-activate under the telephone section of the activation process of XP and they switched everything for me so that my copy of XP and my new motherboard were complimentart of eachother. This took no longer than 10 minutes. (Including the time I was on hold)

Other than that. I guess all I have to say is that FreeCraft has potential but what is holding them back is the graphics side of the game. (Horrible) Looks like a spin off of Microsofts Age of Empires. Even as old as WarCraft 2 is, it looks way better than FreeCraft. This also displays how the game base for Linux is really lacking. FreeSoftware is not in ever case in every area better. This just shows how it can be worse. Lack of developers dedicated to one project. It is free so the people developing for it aren't getting paid. It is slow death. Breeding in weakness.

I know one big complaint about the W2K OS is that it takes forever too boot. Talk about truth. (I started cooking oatmeal for 2 minutes and it took W2K about the same amount of time too boot) Then with the release of XP it suddenly got faster, much faster. Well at the OPK Fest I learned 2 things.

    1. Being that there are 8 megs of space reserved for Windows use that are unmounted upon boot and are never really viewable unless you know the OS call. At the fest the explained they used this space to optimize the boot time on XP. When you shut XP down windows saves a current mini-image of all the important files it needs to boot upon next startup. When the system boots it reads from this partition and utilizes that information to boot Windows so it knows what programs need to be run, what services have been configured, etc. This in the end made XP boot up almost double the speed. (If not faster)

    2. The second most intriging feature they annouced, (well the feature my jaw dropped over) was NTFS 5.0, which is also used on 2K. Even though there are some weird limitations that they talked about. NTFS 5 has the ability to handle harddisks as large as 16 pica bytes. 1000 gigs make a terra, 1000 teras make an exo 1000 exos make a pica.) On a good day that is the whole Kazaa network with room to spare.

I don't know all the specifics as a lot of that is in house info only but still, that is a lot of formattabel information. What would you do with 16000 exo bytes?
