You are making the mistake to believe that foreign hardware will work just as well as it would here.
With broadcasts, the US uses NTSC which is being replaced by ATSC which is carried on an 8VSB modulated signal. Only 2 places in the world currently use ATSC over 8VSB, the US and South Korea.
I have seen a few interesting SK products though, one that runs about 300, is an external tuner using USB 2.0, looks great... now I just need to convince my boss to let me have it (someone here while on business in SK found one and fell in love with it).
The European standard is COFDM for modulation and is radically different enough where it is extremely unlikely that you will find a demodulator capable of handling both, and even if there was such a part, the likelihood of it being used is low, after all, why adapt a multi national standard when you are only looking to target a single region?
selling for triple or quadruple what it was worth on eBay
I take it you've never taken a basic economics course. If a foo sells for price x in the store and plenty of people buy it, it is worth it. However should the same foo be sold on eBay for more than x, say 10*x and someone is willing to pay that much... is the foo worth x or 10*x? the answer... is 10*x. Why? Because if someone is willing to pay a price, it is worth it to them.
Even today, PS2's and Xboxes cost a given amount which is far lower than in pass, however they are still not worth that amount to me, so, I do not buy them.
Ultimately, worth has nothing to do with what price a retailer puts on a product, it is what both parties are willing to buy for and sell for.
You've obviously never spent time around young kids.
I don't care how resilient something is to general abuse or neglect... a kid will find a way... whether it be a bite here or a make shift hammer there... they will find a way... and even if they don't... I'd much rather have a back up should they be successful, course this is all pointless speculation coming from me as I have no kids myself.
I'm all for the retirement of SMTP... but don't you think it would be wise to have a well known, well supported and well used standard already in place before throwing out SMTP? Such a plan would go something like...
Phase 1: Retire SMTP Phase 2: Panic Phase 3: Develop, implement and distribute new e-mail sending system (maybe profit)
Why? It's not unlike when XM first came out, one could easily spend 250 on a receiver and another 50 on the antenna... now you can pick up a receiver for under 50 (although the antenna prices don't seem to have come down as far).
The question is, though, do we need such things in our cars? Do we really need cars equipped with "home entertainment systems," if these cars will only be used for trips to the nearest shop or driving to work?
Of course we don't *need* such options... few things in life do we actually *need*, however such toys do often make life more enjoyable.
I dunno about you, but I don't *need* my ipod, cell phone, or laptop... and a 1 bedroom apartment and a smaller vehicle would probably cost me less and be just enough to get me by... but if one is willing and able to plunk down the cash for a little more? Why not?
I had the same problem at times. It was especially noticeable when scrolling down a web page. It was especially odd that this problem was fairly intermittent.
Thankfully, it all went away when I went to digital out.
I'm more than a little disappointed again to hear that their SoundStorm system was left out again.
I for one love the audio coming out of my Asus A7N8X Deluxe.
I like many laughed at and bad mouthed embedded audio for years, until I heard and saw what this mobo could do. Now, I've got a single SPDIF cable running to my speakers.
nVidia has proven themselves as a strong player in the mobo chipset market, however the SoundStorm omission costs them dearly IMO.
You think that's bad? You should listen to the people where I work, common acronums include (but of course not limited to: PCR, TS, PTS, DTS, PAT, PMT, ADF, and SD, HD and many many more.
Bonus points if you can identify each of the above.
I'd have to do a little digging to find it, but the FCC a number of years ago ruled that home consumers can own their own equipment, that is why you are not required to rent or buy anything from the cable company and can instead bring your own.
That's also why cable descramblers are in the grey area. Yea, they let you have more channels then you are paying for and enter the realm of signal theft (but the signal is trespassing on my property!), they are compatible with the cable network, which is the requirement to be able to own your own equipment.
Most 'digital' cable (ie true digital cable) uses the QAM standard, and it is not too hard to buy your own QAM hardware... you're just going to end up paying for it. Hell, I've got a QAM module for a DTV receiver sitting my work desk right now and am in the process of updating it so I can take it home, QAM, 8VSB and ASI all in one box, awe yea!
DVB you say? Shame that's not going to be compatible with the ATSC standard here in the states.
Maybe, one day such a device will be available here... after the Induce act fails again and is lost forever... after pigs fly, hell freezes over and the {MP|RI}AA and bit torrent get along as friends.

Being a resident of South Dakota, I've heard them all due to my proximity to the Corn Palace so I fear I won't be contributing.
Shhh...
You've obviously never spent time around young kids.

Some might agree... others would say that if that was the case, Microsoft (and others) would never fix security holes if they are not known.
then i'm not going to play with you
You make it all sound so dirty... oh wait, it is!
Fear != Panic
I fear the panic that would be caused by SMTP being retired one day without a working replacement in place and a seamless transition between the two.
So long as we don't try to throw out SMTP all together... the panic can be avoided.

Personally, I fear Phase 2!

I think he's saying that he doesn't read non /. sources very often with out being told to (ie from /.)
But do the photons curve or do they fall straight?
That would depend on your frame of reference. That is to say, compared to what are they 'falling'?

As another poster pointed out, XP home does not have remote desktop.
To that I add the fact that 2k pro does not have it either (which is what I still use at home).
Not in this case, I was refering to the meaning as defined in ISO/IEC 13818-1 which is 'Program Clock Reference'
I guess I'm one of the only people who likes the original and massive xbox controllers. Such a shame.
Sick from school?
If only it had been released a year ago as expected... then I too could use that excuse... now, sick days tend to cost me (if too many are used).
What does any of this have to do with John McCain?
You think that's bad? You should listen to the people where I work, common acronums include (but of course not limited to: PCR, TS, PTS, DTS, PAT, PMT, ADF, and SD, HD and many many more.

You realize that statement was sarcasm don't you?

Cry all you want, but SMB users still out numbers NFS users.
I don't intend this to be a flame, just a simple fact of life currently.
At least with some Samba you can have NFS support, unlike Windows people who hear NFS and are clueless.
