It covers any location in the world (not just USA and Canada). It has fly-by data for hundreds of satellites (including ISS) and my personal favorites, the Iridium flares. If you've never seen a -7 magnitude Iridium flare, do yourself a favor and check it out. It's absolutely awesome.
Heavens Above will tell you where to look (direction and azimuth) and when to look - accurate down to the second!
This is an odd thing, considering that it's the Democrats trying to pass this. I'd expect that the Republicans would be the ones to do something like this in support of big business.
Oh bullshit. Do you remember the Communications Decency Act? Brought to you by Democratic senator Jim Exon. Or what about that delightful piece of proposed legislation, the SSSCA? Courtesy of the Democratic senator from Disneyland, Fritz Hollings.
The Republicans are responsible for their fair share of shitty legislation, but you're only deluding yourself if you think the Democrats/Hollywood have your technological interests in mind.
I propose you do what I do. Always vote for the candidate you know is going to lose. That way you're doing your civic duty and later on when the fit hits the shan you can still say, "don't blame me, I voted for the other guy". [I'm kidding, of course.]
I have a spare partition set up specifically for toying with other OSes/distros. After hearing all the fuss about Gentoo, I thought I'd give it a whirl. Unfortunately, Gentoo (RC1.4) absolutely refuses to install correctly unless you've got a separate/boot partition set up.
It's my system, if I want everything crammed into one partition, why can't I? Normally, I don't do that, but for toy installs - come on. And besides, contrary to what the Gentoo docs state, not having a separate/boot partition isn't really that much of a risk. The whole point of journaling filesystems is that they're resistant to corruption when not unmounted properly. And if I do hose the MBR or the kernel for whatever reason, that's what rescue disks are for.
Source-based distros are obviously for the more advanced user. So why does Gentoo assume you're incompetent and are destined to hose the boot process?
I've looked at Red Hat and the RHN, but my understanding is that it costs money. If so, then I don't think you can really compare RHN to Debian's free apt servers or even Microsoft's "free" Windows Update.
Sure, Red Hat 8.0 is polished as hell. But unless it's got a free method as simple as Debian's "apt-get update; apt-get upgrade", I won't be switching anytime soon.
For those that are unfamiliar with OpenBSD, it is a derivative of BSD that focuses its efforts onto creating a secure system without bells and whistles.
Which contrasts Windows' design of bells and whistles without a secure system.
I knew a guy once that played EQ [...] for 2 weeks without getting up to so much as take a crap. He ate mostly fruits and breads, stuff that backs you up real good.
Hmmmm - I've got the mod points, but I can't find the "-1 Bullshit" selection.
The killer application is to insert a DVD and have it simplistically rip and encode it for personal viewing.
Yeah - I'm sure the MPAA is going to let that happen.
They sue you into oblivion just for making an unlicensed DVD player. Just imagine what they'd do to a company trying to distribute a packaged DVD ripping solution. If there were a "scrotal electrocution" clause in the DMCA, it'd be reserved for this.
Also, Xiph has been working with a couple different companies (iRiver, Frontier Labs) to bring Vorbis to a portable near you; stay tuned.
Oh come on! News like that and no link or credible source?!?
For those who don't know - iRiver is the company that makes Rio's Volt lineup of portable CD MP3 players. Top notch players, but up until now they only play MP3 and WMA.
The Rio Volt's lack of Vorbis support is the only reason I haven't switched to encoding all my music in Vorbis. I've got to believe that the lack of hardware supporting Vorbis is the number one reason for its modest adoption rate.
How do you propose to get this to work? You'd have to force port 80 connections to a proxy server, wouldn't you? Oy... some Internet access you got there.
Uh - he'd probably use NAT. Which, unless you need a world-visible IP address, is as good as genuine Internet access.
The reason that tigers (or any other carnivore) are not obese isn't because they exercise a lot, it's because their meals are pretty difficult to come by. Hence they eat less than they'd like to, and that is very different than what obese humans are doing.
My rules to live by... if you're hungry, drink a glass of water, avoid eating after dinner, and never, ever eat before bed.
I never have bought this one. Sleeping is exactly what most carnivores do after eating. Have you ever seen a fat tiger? Besides, in today's sedentary society, many people are hardly more active during the day then they are asleep. Why should someone not eat before bed just to eat at 8:00 AM and sit at a desk for 9 hours?
The unfortunate truth is that The Man Show had it right with the amazing new "Stop Eating So Much Diet". Seriously, it's called "caloric restriction" and not only will you lose weight, you'll live longer (up to 150% longer in lab animals).

Well, if people heard and believed that MS products were insecure, what would they do?
A lot of potential server buyers out there probably read the "IIS is an insecure" industry mutterings and decide to go with Linux - which you correctly state doesn't hurt HPQ's bottom line. But, there are other choices besides Linux - choices which HPQ doesn't supply. Stuff like *BSD, Solaris, Cobalt, etc.
I'm just saying there are potentially other reasons for Perens' termination, besides HPQ being terrified of MS.
The very fact that Windows is so dominant and that Microsoft is so huge is what prevents true competition from getting a foothold. Microsoft doesn't need bully tactics, they can just carry on like a normal monopoly and everybody will feel bullied anyway.
Just to be the devils advocate (saying that is how you keep from getting modded as a troll around here) - did you ever consider that perhaps Perens' MS bashing was hurting HPQ's bottom line?
HPQ probably makes 1000x times more selling MS-loaded computers than Linux-loaded systems. Perens running around telling everyone how insecure MS software is probably doesn't help them move those MS-loaded systems now does it?
Who knows, if Perens had spent less time MS bashing and more time evangelizing open source maybe he'd still be at HPQ.

Am I the only one that thought that said Sybian?
Oh yeah, this sounds like a great idea. If you thought the Slashdot trolls were annoying, just wait until you LIVE in Slashdot.
Okay, I've tried Gentoo and I've got a complaint.

Looks like you need to add "inability to detect jokes" to your geek code.
I wrote a little utility that allows you to have window transparency under Windows 2000 and XP. It's called Vitrite, and it's licensed under the GPL.
It certainly isn't in the same league as Mozilla and OpenOffice, but you'll definately have room for it on your CD (only 85 KB).
And yes it's the same utility I've been pimping in my sig for months now.

What does Star Trek's Enterprise have in common with toilet paper?
They both search the rings of Uranus for Klingons.
*ba dum tah*
That's just not true...
You must be new here. Talking out of your ass is a very important part of social development here at Slashdot.

How can I redirect some of my tax money to go to Germany?!
Move.

Because when you're sleeping, your metabolism slows waaaaay down. This is why you will get fat if you eat meals right before you go to sleep.
Slow metabolism is a good thing. That's the point of caloric restriction.
Again, the problem is eating too much.
Have you ever seen how much a tiger has to bust his ass to get a meal? If s/he becomes fat, no more meals and its slim city for El Tigre.
Bingo. The end result is that meals are pretty hard to come by for the tiger and it therefore ends up eating less.
My rules to live by... if you're hungry, drink a glass of water, avoid eating after dinner, and never, ever eat before bed.

I'm waiting for the day when the national lottery comes up 1,2,3,4,5 with a bonus ball of 6.
Well, since the odds are only 1 in a million (literally) that it will ever happen, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Heh - that's irony. Installing warezed service packs to patch security holes.
