One tip that I discovered for quieting a PSU (Power Supply Unit) fan that I *never* see anywhere is removing the grill near the fan blades. It makes a huge difference.
In a quest to silence my P166 router, I ended up doing the following:
Underclock the CPU and remove the fan and heatsink and replace with a large passive heatsink.
Add a resistor to the PSU fan to lower the voltage and slow it down.
Added rubber vibration dampers to the mounting points for the PSU fan. (This was worthless.)
During these experiments I discovered that the PSU fan was almost silent when the PSU was disassembled, but quite noisy when everything was put back together. I ended up removing the ring shaped grill on the PSU with a hacksaw and the noise is now imperceptible. Of course you have to be careful when you reach your hand around to the back of the computer or you'll get a playful little bite from the plastic blades.
The hack contests are silly. Any admin with half a brain can set up a secure system and the only way to root it would be 0-day that no self respecting hacker would waste on this system.
The assumption you're making is that all "self-respecting hackers" are only interested in farming zombies or stealing data. Have you considered the possibility that there may be skilled people out there who would like to demonstrate their skills, but do so without breaking any laws?
If you are serious about security you pay for a full audit of the source code, professional penetration testing over a 2 week period, and you test for root exploits using a local account
Nice know-it-all answer. Unfortunately, that's more of a gameplan if you're serious about pissing money away. The reality is that the vast majority of Internet security companies consist of SATAN tied to a web frontend. And a "full audit of the source code"? Do you have any idea how expensive (and fruitless) that would be?
I'm sorry, but what you've suggested is not a viable solution to most organizations that actually have to generate a profit. Furthermore, the simple fact that it all comes down to humans staring bleary eyed at thousands of lines of source code means that many bugs and exploits *will be missed*.
The best security practice is to assume that your company's security systems will be compromised and to have plans in place to mitigate the damage.
No, that's correct - it is 120 watts per square inch. What they don't tell you is that you have to install a 300 foot diameter magnifying glass over your house.
Holy shit. You have got to be the first person to I've ever heard complain that Slashdot is biased towards Microsoft. Most of us can't imagine a more masturbatory pro-Linux web site than Slashdot.
Of course, who wants to be on the side of ignoring or supporting the widespread destruction of the planet by humans?
Let's get this straight. The destruction of the planet is not what's at stake. Earth has endured much greater catastrophes than a bit of carbon dioxide gas.
The issue is whether or not the economic impact of global warming will outweigh the cost of preventing or reversing it.
I just thought I'd point out that if you're using a P2P protocol (e.g. BitTorrent) to download then you're also uploading too. And distributing copyrighted information is rightfully a much more serious act.
(I hope the entitlement kids don't have mod points today.;-)
Your toll of 8,000 civilian casualties in Iraq seems an order of magnitude too low.
That is about the middle ground of most estimates on the civilian death toll during the actual invasion. Yes, total occupation deaths are much higher. But I intentionally used the invasion numbers because speculating on the casualties of a North Korean invasion are completely useless.
Send in the troops! What's that? We're going to use diplomacy instead? We're going to try to avoid tens of thousands of deaths and injured? Wow, good thinking. Too bad about that other country...
Do you ignore the obvious or are you just not aware of it?
North Korea is much more dangerous to disarm than Iraq ever was. Not only do they now have nuclear weapons, but for years they've had one of the largest armies in the world as well as an incredibly dangerous number of artillery cannons ready to turn South Korea into a pile of rubble.
The actual invasion of Iraq resulted in somewhere around 8,000 civilian casualties. Invading North Korea could easily cost millions of civilian lives.
The real trouble is that anything that claims there is a global warming problem caused by pollution comes up against one basic problem:
The US Energy Policy.
Heh - if you think the US energy policy is environmentally unfriendly, just wait until the billion people in China start wanting to drive SUVs. If China turns into the economic superpower that everyone thinks it's going to be, I predict fossil fuel consumption so great it'll make the US look like an Amish state.
I think I've replaced more mobo's to handle larger drives than I have to support faster CPUs.
Sounds like the CmdrTaco Center for Pornography Storage is doing pretty well. At least we know the Slashdot subscription fees are going to a worthy cause.
With a name like DVDjon, it's not like he had much career choice.
It's the same as Lou Gehrig dying of Lou Gehrig's Disease. You would have thought that he would have seen that one coming.
Hell I've got half a mind to go and make 50 Gmail accounts with the invites purely to use them up..
Half a mind is right. I kid, I kid.
Hey Sean Penn, the guy was just joking.

What're my options for buying something pre-built that will work well, no monthly subscription fee, etc?
It's called a TiVo. And you pony up the extra $300 for lifetime guide data.

Talk to the bartender, and after a while mention it's your 21st. Chances are you will get a free drink or two at each place
You're full of crap - it didn't work for me.

pro-ms stories rearing their heads more and more

Oh, they're just still miffed about that whole "french military victories" thing. ;-)
(Yes - I know how it works.)
Myself, I would rather watch DVDs, ride bicycle, write code, dance, make love, or eat pizza than watch television.
Wow - you should get a job in the circus.

How dare they impose on the rights of these people. Why, it's almost like putting them in prison!
But I intentionally used the invasion numbers because speculating on the casualties of a North Korean invasion are completely useless
Err, make that occupation.

I am not a nuclear engineer, so take this with a grain of salt...
Or a fucking radioactive pebble...
Oh crap! This is England's first step in building a clone army to conquer the world. I've had visions of this army and their teeth look like this.
Last year called - it wants its joke back.
How depressing...
Ha - priceless. Best Slashdot comment in weeks.

Yeah, that's the Republicans' job. <grins, ducks, and runs like hell>
Why are you running? This is Slashdot - the place where the anti-Republicans run to.
