Well, the message was primarily meant for artists in general. Really, I don't give a crap about Celine Dion, she sucks, and even if she was indie I still wouldn't buy her cd's or much less waste my bandwidth downloading a pirated mp3 of her music.

But there have been more and more grumblings from artists of nearly all music genres that the record labels view them as a commodity, and I'm sure some of you will say that technically they are, but the point is that (for most artists, maybe not Celine or Metallica) it's art, not business and art can't be 'manufactured' as a product.

Attention Celine Dion and all musicians: crashing your fans' computers is not a good business practice. No matter what your agent says.

The artists are pretty much powerless to this sort of underhanded behaviour, or so most of them think.

    the warning should read:
Attention musicians!!! Go for indie labels or produce your music yourself. Better profits, better control over YOUR work. You are not an indentured servant of the record labels!! Give your producer the finger! Go INDIE!

Most of the time, the reasons fans fail after using compressed air on them is that the dust and dirt either get blown into the bearing, or the fan is spun to an ultra-high speed past the bearing's rated speed, and the failure begins.

Yep, learned that one early on, now I hold the fan with my finger or a screwdriver before spraying air. I think it all comes down to dust being crammed into the bearings.

By the way, thanks for the tip. I think I'll try it out this weekend and see how high my annoyance threshold can get while f*cking around with that lock ring! I've dealt with those while working on cars, no sir, don't like 'em.

With center-motor fans, after 3-4 months continuous usage the coils and bearings get clogged with dust/cigarette smoke/cat hair/etc.
Eventually it slows the fan down, so all you need to do is blow the dust out with some compressed air, right? WRONG!

Every time I try to clean a case fan or cpu fan in this way it will fail completely within 5 days of cleaning. I don't know why, but at $15-20 a piece I just take the hit in the wallet and turn the other butt cheek :)

But, I suspect that with the motor on the outside, it won't be exposed to so much crap and might last a little longer.

An interesting side note: I finally got a motherboard that has cpu temp monitoring software and I've watched the temp gradually rise after a few months of use as the blades and motor collect all that crap I breathe on a daily basis!

Seriously, let's think about that for a sec...

We all pretty much know there would be widespread destruction, even if it were a relatively small bomb like Fat Man or Little Boy. But in light of the WTC tower collapse, imagine the entire area of NYC in the same ruins. If you were down in this bomb shelter and managed to survive both the explosion and the hundreds of buildings collapsing around you, would you even be able to get out.

And once you got out, think of all the debris, I mean an empty building being demolished on purpose is enough garbage, but then you'll have cars, buses, furniture, bodies, etc. Your average ICBM has a 5 - 6 megaton warhead, the two dropped over Japan were something like 50-60 kilotons, I expect even the the strongest building would be reduced to rubble.

The national guard would be completely helpless in any kind of rescue mission for survivors. And on top of all this, all you'd have to snack on would be some nasty crackers and sour candies! Of course, you could always resort to eating track rabbit like the homeless in the subways.

I'm up to speed on the whole "cheating is lying and lying is wrong" deal. I was just observing that a whole slew of /. readers started spouting off like Taco was implying that it's ok to cheat.

When someone is taking a CS course, or taking a job in the IT field for that matter, you need to be sure that the person has a firm grasp on the concepts being taught/used. So, naturally that should come first. But there are easier, more foolproof ways to find out if someone understands a particular concept and can exercise that knowledge.

It just seems that a program to "detect" cheating is probably fairly easy to bypass and is really a lazy method of teaching. But to really make the effort to teach a group of people and make sure they ALL understand the concept being taught requires one to think and work instead of spouting facts from a text book.

There may be several ways to code a particular program, but if your class consists of 30-40 people, there may not be 30-40 completely different ways to code that program.
