I would mod that up if I had points too. As a parent, I find the attitudes of a certain subset of/.ers to show utter ignorance combined with incredible stupidity, and as was stated above, parents are expected to be omniscient, omnipotent, and omni-anything-else-you-can-think-of with respect to their children. I think my wife and I do a pretty good job overall, but I can tell you right now, in this society, it is an uphill battle. It seems society (i.e., anyone other than you) is allowed to influence your children any way they want, and if it has any adverse affect on your kids, then that's just your tough luck. Well, I do everything I can to protect my kids from the bad aspects of popular culture, and they are, as a result, all almost completely disinterested in it because they have a plethora of positive, constructive and compelling things _to be_ interested in. However, there is no denying that the pervasiveness and utter decrepitude of modern culture makes this harder than it was in my parents' day. Parents need to use any tool they have at their disposal. However, if you asked the average/.er of the type I mentioned above, their logic would, if followed to its completion, require that children automatically be considered de facto adults.
I have to admit it's been almost 30 years since I read the book, but that was always my take on it, too. Smith knew he would eventually be executed, but it hadn't happened yet.
Probably time for a re-read since so much of what he describes exists in the U.S., even if most of them are at a vastly smaller degree. I don't mean so much the political situation but the mentality of doublethink, Newspeak, the memory of which jumped out at me as soon as I'd heard about "political correctness" with which is shares a great deal, "flexible" history, and unfortunately, perpetual war against a vague enemy.
Yeah the "i" thing was clearly a good idea, but it's definitely getting long in the tooth as far as marketing concepts go.
Of course, around the time iMac came out, every third company had e- or i- as a prefix in its name. I worked for iSoft, for instance. (No, the company is long gone.)
However, GIMP is just embarrassing, and the utter disregard that the devs have that fact is real arrogance on their part. But it's open source... just fork it, add a simple feature and call it "iPhoto" or "iPaint".:-/
You're making the common mistake of assuming Microsoft (or any company, politician, or person you just picked up at the bar) actually believes what they say.

The first page of your application's webpage should explain what the software *IS* and *HOW TO USE IT*, not just provide a long list of your bug-fixes.

It's always been two minutes for me, which I find infuriating. If it were five minutes, I'd probably quit/. altogether.
It _should_ be 15 seconds between hitting "Reply" and "Submit" and one minute between comments. Some people can think and type quickly. But don't complain because/. is the way it is and it's not changing.
Money talks, and when there's a lot of money it not only talks, it gets up in Parliament, makes speeches and proposes laws.
Oh, get over yourself... we've had that in the U.S.A. for years and it's been fine. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm late for Halliburton/Disney Re-education Camp.
This article would seem to contradict you... frankly, any way you go at it you're likely to be cheated.
If we ask nicely, maybe Congress will bail out all the losers in Las Vegas from the past few years as well. I mean it's not their fault if they placed bad bets... is it?
Yeah, except most of those "problems" are so vaguely worded that who knows what they will pay for:
"Mr. Army-type Person, I replaced linear algebra by algebraic geometry in a systematic way! Check out this work here. Can I have my million dollars now?"
"Let me see. Nope, sorry, we wanted it in pink... and a larger font."
"But I can change--"
"Nope. Too late. We'll just take this. Thanks for your effort anyway."

Let's just say if Windows was a life form it would not be compelling evidence for Intelligent Design.
I hear there are lawsuits against iDaho, iOwa, and iNdiana.
Well, to put in more simple terms: Linux was designed. Windows just happened.
Yes, and it's "Show Solidarity with Our New Messianic Overlord" Day

You know, the Apple ][ emulator I run on my Amiga has a compiler...
I'll fire up UAE in a Linux VM and see what I can do.

Prefixes are far from unique to Linux.
And they're still usually lame.
I agree: G-PIMP sounds much cooler!
"Dude, great photoshop."
"No way, man. My pix are G-PIMPed for maximum pwnage."
Yeah, I think "Fringe" is a cool show too.
Do you know where I can get Windows 3.1 for my Apple ][?

A fiscal conservative Republican is different from a Libertarian because there are no Libertarians in Congress... wait... never mind.
Maybe we can go back to the days when Democrats were Democrats and Republicans weren't just War-mongering Democrats. There's still hope for 2012...
Yeah, you could do worse, like go vote on an election or something.
It's like a slot machine where the wheels only have lemons on them.

re: pedantry
I rest my case.
Because iTunes the software is just a music player (and a crappy one at that, IMO). iTunes the store is where you buy DRM-ed music from Apple.
Guinness. It's good for you.
The pedantry on this thread is frightening. Clearly he was talking about ITMS.
people who wrote it aren't even there anymore
Since Microsoft acquired almost every product they sell from someone else originally, the people who wrote often never were there in the first place.
