I'm gonna go see this because J.J. Abrams is such hot name in the industry. At least that's what Paramount is hoping. But I know him as the guy that completely fucked up Alias whenever he meddled. He name is attached to Lost, but that show is only doing good because Abrams has left his grubby little hands off of it.
For those who don't watch Alias, they have a recurring story about people chasing the artifacts of an ancient inventor (Rimbaldi). When it was a mystery, it was somewhat fascinating. By the end of last season, they reveal that it was a zombie making machine. Needless to say, I haven't tuned in this season.
The idea behind the movie has already been repeatedly rejected by the fans. This is the same slap I've felt from Paramount back when they decided to leave Berman and Bragga in charge for Enterprise. A complete and utter contempt for their fans, but they want our money all the same. But you know what, this time I'm done. I'll wait till all those muthafuckers die off and then I'll give Star Trek a shot again.
Second, have any of you watched Alias? Especially seasons 1-3? And you're telling me J.J. Abrams doesn't know about continuity?
I'm not sure what to make of your statement. If it's a joke, then I apoligize for not getting it. But if you're serious, then you are the first Alias fan I've ever met who's ever claimed that Abrams has even the smallest clue when it comes to continuity. The zig-zagging and directions changes on that show are legendary. It's the freakin' poster-child show for discontinuity. The only thing that is continuous for J.J. Abrams is his paycheck.
I don't think it's an issue of enough time passing, but you're right on with the people. Anyone who's had any involvement with Star Trek should have nothing to do with this. They kind of did the right thing in selecting "a" Abrams, but not Abrams specifically.
I'm a huge Lost fan and I like Alias season 1, but everything I know about this guy screams "yet another Berman/Bragga type." Everytime he said he'd step up his involvement with Alias, he turned it further into trash. He wrote Armageddon and now MI:III (we all know that's gonna suck). He's one of these connected big-wig producer types who doesn't seem to have any true talent. A Whedon or a Straczynski would have made me (and most of the fans) a lot more excited.
I'm hoping I'll be brave enough to pass on this one. Especially with the stupid starfleet academy plot that fans have been begging Paramount NOT to do for, as they said, decades now. Paramount is so fucking gay! I hope they go bankrupt.
The original purpose of the album was to promote the concerts. That changed some decades back. Perhaps the record industry has decided to go back to that model since MP3s force albums into being advertisements again.
Still, who in their right mind would pay so much for a ticket? I can't think of an artist where I'd pay more than $50 to see. But then, I can't think of a touring artist whose album I'd even be willing to download anymore (free or otherwise). Especially not some dried-up old hag.
I use to just mess around with Linux (going back to Slackware in the mid 90s). The Gentoo community is the reason Linux is now my primary operating system. Without those forums, I would have stuck mainly with Windows.
I feel the same way about the Gentoo forums. I got back into Linux because of them. I had been away for many year cause I didn't want to deal with the snobs while troubleshooting. I didn't have to wade through an endless stream of people asking the same question, only to get the same response: "google it, god fucking damnit already". If I had a dime for every google hit that told me to google it, I'd own google lickity split.
I believe that institutions are corrupt forms of once purposeful organizations and, by their very nature, they filter out the incorruptible. Our problem is that everything in our society has become institutionalized.
I would very much like to get a motorcycle but what you describe is the very reason I won't get one. I've had several accidents and I don't go three days without a near miss because of same drivers that you describe. I'm a borerline anarachist who's against most laws, but enough is enough on this one. I don't need another thinktank study, I personally conduct two studies a day on this. I too can pick out cell phone drivers before I can actually see if they're yapping. I get it right like 95% of the time (ex. the swerving, the erratic braking). The effect on driving is so crystal clear that I can't believe there are any defenders of it here.
ike you pointed out, once you've started the call on a cellphone and are just holding it to your head, it's really not any more dangerous or distracting than holding a cup of Starbucks in that hand
Ok, do you drive? This is just not true and that's the point. Everyone thinks they can do it until you're the one behind these people. They can't stay in the lane and they can't maintain their speed. This is proven to me at least a dozen times a day. And coffee can at least be put down for a few minutes. Most people won't interrupt their phone conversations for anything.
I have seen other scary drivers on cells, but in my area, it is the giant SUV women who are the worst.
This is so true here in Colorado Springs. Husbands, who know their wives can barely drive, encourage them to buy a large SUV to protect them from the inevitable. These same women continually yap of their phone (seriously, who are they talking to at 8 in the morning) and swerve around, in the passing lane going ten miles under the speed limit. About once a month, I end up on the shoulder or forced into a parking lot because they change lanes without looking, cause they're busy yapping. Occasionally, I can use my horn in time before they run over my little Civic. But then they get angry and start giving me the finger because they haven't payed enough attention to realize what they almost did.
Hell this morning, I was behind some woman with a cell phone in one hand and lipstick in the other. I presume she was driving with her knees. My commute is extended by 20 minutes each day because of these fools.
I'm pretty much an anarchist and I am against most laws. But this is a law that is absolutely needed. I put my life on the line everyday because of these pathetic people who are too lonely to go ten minutes without yapping it up. The are far, far worse than any drunk driver I've ever seen.
Ironic since my problem is I hate how openoffice's print dialogs are so anemic compared to KDE's. I have to export to PDF and print in KDPF to get what I want. Making OpenOffice use kprinter doesn't work so well for me. I was only reading this thread cause I was hoping KOffice would be my ideal solution.
This really is the thing I hate most since switching primarily to Linux. I absolutely despise those Gnome dialogs. They are so unintuitive and clumsy. It took me long enough to get use to the ok and cancel buttons being reversed from what I'm use to, but recent builds of Firefox have these new (I'm assuming they're new since I don't recall them prior to a few months ago) GTK dialogs that make me embarassed that I was ever once a Gnome supporter (last century). Firefox is my most used app, I really wish they had KDE builds for it. Even a custom interface would likely be better. I do hope this OSDL is feasible, but I doubt it.
Same here. Me and my three friends have been hitting on this girl in the office, but she keeps on getting distracted by her boyfriend on the phone. I think I have a shot cause she's always saying her boyfriend is the "frustrated" type who won't leave her alone at the office.
It's unfortunate that that is true. I'm more inspired by smaller numbers (0.9 - 2.0). I find larger numbers are an indication of institutionalization. A product with a large number doesn't take chances because it's been around too long (kind of like old people). A smaller number indicates the new kid on the block, the cutting edge, nimbleness etc. Lot's of little sub-versions indicate continual progress to me.
Also, I see large leaps in version numbers as a desperate move. It says to me that you don't have a lot going on, but here's a nice shiny new number to base a BS marketing campaign on. I'm not saying this about Firefox per se, just in general. I stay in the 1.0.0 - 1.9.9 range unless there is a fundamentally leap in application functionality or complete incompatibility with the previous versions. Too many major version jumps and you soon have to resort to gay-ass names like Vista to describe your product.
I also find that I'm more likely to upgrade to a minor version, sooner than I would to a major version. Anything that ends in.0 screams buggy to me. It took me about a year to upgrade to java 1.5.0 because of that (glad I finally did).
I find a lot of internal corporate websites only work for IE. Training course, etc. Perhaps not worthwhile, but I do have to reboot (into Windows) if I want to keep my job. The more corporate the website, the more I find flash over substance. A lot of our vendor webtools are like this too.
I'm talking major, fundamental discoveries. Cars, planes, lightbulbs, vaccines, etc. The TV is just a fancy lightbulb with a telephone attached and many of our modern day inventions are just new takes on 19th inventions. You mention the internet, but I already covered that when I mentioned that the integrated circuit was one of the only two big inventions of the 20th century. We've been expanding that out ever since. If you look at a list of 19th century inventions and compared it with today's list, you may start to see what I'm talking about. Yes, more stuff gets patented these days, but almost none of it deserves it. We have more gadgets, but they only incrementally build on what came before. The 19th century was like a technological revolution by comparison.
They voted him in. For real this time. No question about it, Bush won that election.
And then you talk to Americans and realize you can't find a single one who actually voted for the ass (actually, I know a couple). There were plenty of "questions" about it. In fact, many of of exit polls were as far off as they were in the Ukraine. The 2004 election was more obviously rigged than the 2000 election ever was. It just didn't get the press that the 2000 election did.
Either way, it wouldn't have made too much of a difference. Each president pushes the limits in unconstitutionality only to have everyone scream for a new party to do it all over again in four years. Bush wouldn't have been able to get away with all he has if it wasn't for corruption fatigue. People didn't want another impeachment after the Clinton fiasco. And now we're too far in. It scares the shit out of me to wonder how far the next one will go. And it will continue going until there is a revolution. Power is never surrendered voluntarily.
Actually I had once read that Orwell orginally meant for the story to take place around the turn of the century but picked the date 1984 since it was the 100 year anniversary of Fabian Socialism. He saw "1984" as the society the Fabians were trying to create for us. It is erie how true to life that book has become, even to the point of editing history with the massive reclassification of old documents.
I'm gonna go see this because J.J. Abrams is such hot name in the industry. At least that's what Paramount is hoping. But I know him as the guy that completely fucked up Alias whenever he meddled. So why are you people yapping on the cell phone AS your two 10 year old kids are squabbling? That's what I see all the time.
As long as you don't mess with my Dish PVR.
Google "openoffice kprinter". You can print from those apps, using the KDE print manager. I just don't like doing it that way. But I feel your pain.
Ironic since my problem is I hate how openoffice's print dialogs are so anemic compared to KDE's. I have to export to PDF and print in KDPF to get what I want. Wow, I'm glad Netflix brought this lawsuit or I would have never heard of Intelliflix. Thanks to both of you!
the ones to watch are those concentrating and not even taking notes
Shouldn't the "ones to watch" be the ones that the "ones to watch" are concentrating on?

He erred only by two decades.

I'm moving out of the country as soon as I get my act together.
Where to? Name a nation worth living in that we won't take down with us when the economy blows.
That was Bush and Kerry, but point taken.
