    Well, in effect, the way Red Hat makes money is by charging for software (services, support). They have also acquired patents with a we-won't-sue-you promise if you release the "infringing" software under certain licenses.

    This is something I definitely want some more "professional" comment on. It will be interesting to see what PJ, the OSI, and maybe the FSF have to say. Hopefully they can relate this in a way I can understand (IANAL, :P)

    Great job trolling, as I'm posting this there's well over a dozen responses, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. This type of post might be appropriate on a story or thread that wasn't linked with an article EXPLAINING WHY MACS HAVE A ONE BUTTON MOUSE. Maybe you should RTFA.

    I'm guessing that it's due to people posting (in their .sigs and whatnot) "scientology is a cult" and linking the word scientology or the phrase to the clambake site. I don't know of a formal googlebomb, though.

    The reason that this isn't "old hat" is the fact that this guy figured out how to grab data, encode it, and get the piezo to work on a device where IT WASN'T MEANT TO DO THIS. 300-baud modems were designed to do this.

    Compare device size/weight and size of the hard drive (I'm assuming you have a HD-based player) to the Ipod. Consider also that the Ipod was not designed to run ogg. The proc in your player may have been. Your comparison completely inept.

    Just because something works in a way acceptable to you doesn't mean that it works in a way acceptable to everyone. I have a friend who, the minute he gets a new computer, changes the window title font to this absolutely unreadable thing. Why? He likes it.

    I haven't RTFEULA of the itunes store, but there's probably a clause somewhere in there saying "you won't mess with the DRM", and if you live in copyright FascistLands (i.e. USA) it's illegal to remove that protection anyway. You can't really say that you "bought" the tracks, either, you just purchased a "licensing right" to listen to them under certain conditions.

    Because routers only know the next link in the chain, it would be impossible for Microsoft to determine who was listening to the multicast transmission.

    Since this is Microsoft we're talking about, you will probably be forced to use DRM-encumbered software that reports back what channel you're watching.

    Of course, if the F/OSS community could pressure Internet Providers to switch multicasting on now ...

    To do this, we'd need a killer app.

    Consider these assertions:

    1) Cars are valuable
    2) Cars are mostly homogenous

    The reason cars are stolen is that they're not unique. They are probably one of the more valuable non-unique things that can be stolen easily.

    I don't think it will be possible to write emulators for a same-generation console. Sure, they might use similar processors, but their buses (and possibly other things) will probably have some significant differences, and it would be hard to emulate all that AND keep the game running at speed.

    I don't think most Playstation emulators cache the entire disc to RAM. This would be pretty unnecessary (and probably require something like 1+ GB of RAM), especially since most of the content on the discs that takes up any real amount of space is the audio and video stuff, which is usually streaming as the game plays.

    Let's ignore the obviously ridiculous claim that supercomputer-scale computing power is coming to my home in the next year or two and think about power consumption. How is this uber-CPU going to get enough battery power in a PDA?
