About costs and market - as somebody else mentioned here, development costs (design, production, testing) is bellow 6 M$. Amount of ppl wanting to pay 20 M$ is limited - let's say 20-30 ppl. But if go to 10 M$ or 5 M$ or even 1 M$ for single launch, the market size goes somelike probably exponencially. And 20 M$ is launch cost using 20-30 years old technology!
I think if you use some "rocket-type-vehicle" instead of 3 passangers (autopilot rulez), it'll take MUCH LESS fuel to go to space from 100 km in comparison to 0 km.
Bussiness case - hell, even only the X-price will make them earn 2-3 M$. And there are ppl spending 20 M$ to go to orbit!
- Konq core (KHTML) was chosen by Apple to be Safari core (and they contributed lot of code back!) instead of Gecko from Mozilla (but I prefer Mozilla since I use Windows & Linux) - OO - it work's "good enough" and since it's also multiplatform it'll stay here. But from what I've heard, the OO code is as ugly as hell! Since KOffice will natively support OO file format it won't be such a big matter. - Main big advantage of K* is CONSISTENT look of everything
I think that lot of bugs in Linux in the last year is caused BECAUSE exactly MANY more eyes look at the kernel. I think that this rate will go down by the end of this year (we have to "fix enough" 2.6 series) and will be very low. I'm now talking about CRITICAL SECURITY bugs (local/remote root exploit). Bugs in OSS will be always found more. There will never be any SW without security/other bugs but since kernel security won't change a lot in future most of critical bugs should all belong to us;)
About Chernobyl - did you know that the operators wanted to do illegal experiment (see details bellow) and they had to bypass 7 security mechanisms to perform the experiment? (they even had to CUT (!!!) some wires!)
The operators wanted to get some bonus money by trying to get a little more power when reactor was going to be shut-down and was running on the "neutral gear" - I can't explain it too much but my father was in Russia to learn how to do reactor simulators so he knows all the details...
The open source drivers bring Linux where it is now. With LOT of binary drivers you are tight to API which you can't change if you need to (and if you change it, NOBODY can fix binary driver but vendor).
Also - with binary driver you can't pin-point failure (if some happens) to the driver but user won't care - he'll just say "Linux crashes as much as Windows" but he won't see it's bad binary driver - Microsoft estimated 70% of system failures were caused by bad device drivers!
It was already said that shuttle didn't have enough fuel to get to ISS orbit. But otherwise I agree - ppl can think out very clever solution in need - see Apollo 13.
If you buy RH EL WS ( heh:)) ) for office use you can use it also at home (or any number of computers anywhere - even you don't have to buy it, just that there are no ISO files avalaible, only RPMs).
Also interesting is historical background for this chapter. LOTR was written after WWI and shire was meant to represent england which wasn't hit by war directly but war changed a whole generation of man.
By that logic then Linux needs Microsoft's technology to compete with Microsoft.
Something like Samba or Wine?
Hi - why can't NASA try to use some nearer spacecratt (Cassini, Mars Express etc.) to communicate with Pioneer 10?
Editing ps seems to me even worse ;-) Try to learn your secretary to write letter in ps... ;-)
Don't forget that PDF is read-only. (OK - there are some tools for limited edition it but AFAIK none in Linux)

IIRC hybrid cars should have better MPG effeciency in cities/jams with lot stop'n'jump driving (?) style.
I know ppl which drinks 10 litres a beer per evening and still live (and - well - "walk") ;-)
I'd expect them to leave Evil Empire and start working in FSF as voluntary community job ;-)
SCO ppl must be stoned. They think that they own ALL AIX/IRIX/*X* source codes :-)
So this is the Windows NT/2000 leaked source code?

If IBM + SCO worked on it, SCO should have some code...
For 10 bilion bucks you can get shiny new space elevator. USA "war" in Iraq & Afganistan has costed till now > 100 bilions...

"...hard part is over, and now a lot of cleaning up and bug fixes..."
Does only me finds this funny? NOW the hard BORING part starts...

Just to be clear - you switched from RH to Debian because lack of support???

Please - be clear on this - Red Hat CORPORATE (ENTERPRISE) desktop line is called Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation and isn't kaput!
Don't even think about getting it this year ;-) Have you ever seen such a large project on schedule? .)
I didn't say it's allegory of any form. I just can reading this part of LOTR imagine feelings of ppl after WWI.
