    I don't like that there won't be (even on DVDs) Scouring of Shire. That's why I find LOTR so great - it's so bitter-sweet end that war has got consequences even in such an idylic places like Shire.

    RedHat's primary advantage was its low cost for a fully supported product

    That's probably the reason why they left RedHat Linux - too much of support (equals skilled manpower equals lot of money) for low cost.

    One example - in Samba = 3 is packet "decoded" in various places. In Samba 4 there will be one single place where will be COMPLETE packet decoded (even things which are completely useless for Samba). For example - this enables you to assemble new packet and use Samba server as gateway to you Win2k server.

    Samba is really nice piece of software but as the evolution goes on and on there are things on the "todo" list which you couldn't think of when doing first design.

    I get 10%-20% of the transfer with SMB as I do with NFS.

    You are kidding, aren't you? Did you mean 10-20% LESS THEN NFS? (e.g. 10 MB/s NFS vs 9 MB/s SMB)

    There are some projects which are trying to modify rc scripts to boot on background (now it's sequential - after one is completely started up next one is started). Problem is dependency but I've seen some quite good solution to this. But I don't remember the name any more :-(

    Windows XP are usually nothing more then OS+GUI. But Linux usually boots all kind of services also.

    The main point is you can have easily (OK - not so easy, but easy for NSA etc.) database of all password-hash pairs. Thats why Linux uses so caled "salt" which can change system to system which causes that you'd had to have password-salt-hash triplets which is HARD to have ;)

    ANY hash can produce same result on two different files since the amount of information in hash is amount of information in files.

    Some vendors (Promise D-Link 520+ etc.) are using their own 802.11b standard (WiFi) called 802.11b++ but they doesn't provide Linux drivers. Since this card should have 22 Mbit/s insted of standard 11 Mbit/s ppl want to use it in routers etc. but there are no Linux drivers. So some hackers (not crackers!) looked how does Windows drivers (or any other) control and use (when I call this card does this) this card and tries to implement it in Linux.
